evans power center reverse dot on both, it adds some fatness, mildly takes some attack brightness and reduces ring a little, but it still sounds open as it is a single ply. somebody once said "ambassador with balls" and it puts it very well (he meant remo cs, but thats the same thing from another brand)!
Super honest assessment from a talented, emotionally stable thinker. They BOTH sound GREAT! Though for me, after decades of listening to Ludwig snare drums, it's the sound that I expect to hear. The nature/quality of its 'voice' is unmistakable and SO familiar. What's not to love? I love Ludwig Snare Drums. Thank You for your sane words and GREAT SHOWCASE!
both of these beauties sonically sound and look fantastic I would definitely say so I would say it comes down to a choice of personal preference ....🙂❤️
@all I put a die cast hoop on my copper and it transformed just like the ludwig did. Hoops really make all the difference - check out what it does to the Black Beauty: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c5gbtB7EIR0.htmlsi=OVjgGogyXW40mHcb After that I decided to revisit this comparison: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3zhb-v5rxFM.htmlsi=Lar7tTrW76R_TSlN
Splitting hairs, people. They both sound great. Ask yourself…how many punters are going to listen to the Tama snare and leave the gig because it doesn’t sound as good as the Ludwig? Answer…not one!
@@roybeckerman9253I had a Ludwig lm402 Supraphonic and a lb417 Black Beauty, but liked the BB a lot more (its my favourite snare), so the supraphonic is sold now. maybe I got your comment wrong, THE "supraphonic" for me is the bonham chrome over aluminum
Ludwig black beauties are some of the finest snares made they can't even be compared to Tama snare drum if you want the Ludwig snare Sound purchase the Ludwig
I have the Tama SLP Big Black Steel Snare and holy hell does it smack. I love the BB but I bought the SLP blind and it is a killer snare. Always get compliments on it from folks. I usually run a P77 on top set to a fairly medium-high tuning and then a nearly fully cranked bottom (probably still the stock head honestly). It thuds, it smacks, it pings, and it cracks, but it doesn't do anything slightly too much more than the other. Thanks for the video!
I have both snares, the Tama is an excellent snare, one of my favorites. The Black Beauty however, is the greatest snare of all time, my absolute favorite snare.
yea, Im still wondering if thats really true. sounds like a drum posted a video recently, making an acrolite and wood pearl sound the same, claiming the material does not matter. without rim shots I might agree with them, but with rim shots you basically hit the shell like a gong and then it really matters!
@@simongrossjohann I’m an amateur builder and I’ve been saying that about wood for years. Mahogany, birch, beech, ash….it’s all in the shell geometry, head choice, room, and player.
@@ghiblinerd6196 do you also think so for rim shots? Because when I play my 14x6.5" metals shells, there is a clear difference in many aspects and I fiddle a loooot with tunings and make them sound similar!
@@simongrossjohann I feel like rim choice of all things makes a bigger impact when it comes to rim shots and rim clicks but yes, if someone plays rim shot heavy like chad sexton I could see metal vs wood making an audible difference
@@ghiblinerd6196 I fiddled a lot with hoops in the past week, made a comparison video Ludwig Black Beauty with triple flanged vs die cast ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c5gbtB7EIR0.htmlsi=gtXUTXTLlfJDqygk and had a comparison Tama Star Reserve Copper with Ludwig Black Beauty, first with triple flanged hoops, now with die cast. hoops make all the difference and rimshots really show the shell material and things like hammered/smooth! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3zhb-v5rxFM.htmlsi=6vjDuDtkTcSNWjYR
thx 😄✌🏻its a tricks aluminum stand with 2 legs that are completely adjustible, you can point them anywhere. its really a great stand, very flexible, very light! trickdrums.com/product/pro1v-high-hat-stand/ ♥️
The Tama is cool, but the Black Beauty is simply the goat. You can clearly hear how it effortlessly carves its spot in a full drum mix, even without processing. Superb attack.
hey fabio, fully agree! although the tama also cuts through a mix, the black beauty also lingers between hits in a beautiful way. the BB has this 3-way sound: initial rim attack with a direct, thick and dark shell & wire response which forms that initial fatness ... and then after a short amount of time, its blends over into that crystal clear, dark shell sustain that lives between hits and reminds the listener who is the boss! 😁 I use the Tama usually for "sleep token"-like high pitched stuff, which doesnt suit the black beauty. This comparison is a little unfair, because its the BB prime medium frequency, whereas its in the lowest useful spectrum of the Tama.
@@simongrossjohann Yes, exactly, they're indeed working in two completely different frequency spectrums, so they definitely shouldn't be "compared" too much. And wow, that's a spot-on description of the Black Beauty's sound. Guess I'll steal it, too accurate ahahahah.
its my favourite too! when the live sound engineer pointed to the Tama, I was nearly a little disappointed cause I wanted to play the black beauty! 🥲 The BB had triple flanged hoops back then though, I really think die cast works well for a BB (even though I most often prefer triple flanged). But I think thats also an ear vs mic thing - while die cast sounds pretty sharp and overexaggerates the attack of a rim shot for my ears, it still sounds great via the mic! 🤔
Wait, what? That’s a camera mic? Damn…I actually like the kick sound. Way better than so many videos where the attack portion of the kick sounds like someone blowing a raspberry!
@@mdmorris6193 I uploaded a few other videos and dialed back camera in favor of the mixer stereo sum (its the only 2 sources I got). I think it sounds a lot more like a bass drum there! ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KYGGakV2xGA.htmlsi=7krGLFmfQqkJPrE4
what bothers you? I love the sound and Ive tested a LOT of different heads! ;) Ambassador was a little too ringy, but others quickly muffled too much for my taste - the power center reverse dot takes away some of the high frequencies, but remains lively and leaves a more mid focused shell sustain which I learnt to love. there was a time not too long ago, where I cranked snares higher and moongel'ed everything, but by now I started to really like the shell popping through here and there in the mix and I deliberately use more medium tunings to bring it out more!
yea, I agree - its this initial die cast attack followed by this thick initial shell response in the first 500ms (which could also be emphasized from die cast) which I really love. everything after that sounds very similar, like the sustain of the shell! ludwig is my clear favourite for heavier music! 🥰
I liked Nürburgring and Bilster Berg more plus Anneu du Rhin was a really long drive - dont think Ill be back here too soon. Looking forward to SPA now in August, that one looks really fantastic!
