So glad you included mission paint for in your burnt sienna comparison. I’m new to painting and water color and purchased a set of Mission Gold paint because it seemed the most affordable professional paint set. I watched another burnt sienna comparison, which was a great video, but I just couldn’t figure out why my burnt sienna was appreciably different than those paints in the video. Your video was very helpful and I appreciate greatly your discussion of various pigments. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks
Thank you so much for giving this insight, it is so difficult to choose a book when you do not know what is inside. This one is going on my wishlist 😉 🤗
Funny, I was literally just trying out the old vs new tubes of Sap Green from QoR (my favourite brand). I didn't like their old one, but I just got the Ali Cavanaugh set and the new one is much warmer and so, so nice! Am really looking forward to painting with it! 🥰
For me the strength of any magenta is in its mixes, which is why I prefer PR122 in general and Schmincke's Purple Magenta in particular (though Daniel Smith's Quinacridone Lilac is a close, almost neon, second). It mixes with Pyrrol Scarlet to make blazing reds, with Hansa Yellow Medium or Deep to create a range of stunning oranges, and with Phthalo Blue Red Shade for vibrant purples. On its own, it produces soft, versatile pinks.
Wow!! I know this is a super late question on this video but I thought I’d give it a try…. What is the name of the stamp company that you got your double rectangular stamp from that you do your paint color swathes in? I really like the way it looks 😊. Thank you and I really enjoy your videos!
I completely understand what you're saying about mixing. I love mixing. But I feel the same way about cooking. I can and I do when I have to but I just don't like to. Unfortunately comparing to mixing watercolors, cooking is a bit more essential skill. 😅
I know this is from a year ago, but I had no idea that Prima Tek made so many different palettes! I knew they had a lot, but not that many. My first one was the Vintage Pastels and I HATE it, lol! The quality is just pure crap so I never bought any others. Still don't think I'll buy any even though some of them are absolutely gorgeous, just cuz I have so many tubes of great quality paints that are the same colors and I don't like buying pans of paint. I like making my own pans. Edit: I refuse to buy pans cuz the amount is not worth it, unless it's Roman Szmal!
Weird. That QoR swatch is definitely Ultramarine Blue, not Dioxazine Purple! I looked at the note that I printed off for you when I sent all those dot cards. Ultramarine Blue was listed just after Dioxazine Purple, so I mislabeled them somehow. Find the one labeled Ultramarine Blue and I bet it's actually Dioxazine Purple. Sorry! I actually really like the A Gallo swatch! It doesn't look much like a dioxazine violet though, I agree. Mission Gold's is my favourite of the ones you swatched. ☺
how odd my winsor newton diox. is EXTREMELY pigmented! its my favorite : ) that stinks about not getting to compare qor i dont have that one so was curious how it compared. good video!
So I'm going to buy some more brands and probably redo this one, but at least I have these five for now to take a look at. I am shopping on Jackson's and Blick to add more to the collection :)
Great comparison chart. I'm looking forward to more producers/manufacturers/brands being offered in the future. I realize that can get super pricey, so don't go bankrupt in the process! You're doing a great job and providing an excellent service!!
I came to youtube thinking something was wrong about my Mijello burnt sienna but I guess it actually comes a bit different than the traditional one! I LOVE the Winsor and Newton one so so much. It almost radiates! Absolutely love it
Thank, this helped me a lot! I got the starter set of 6x5ml tubes from Jackson's. Those colours lean towards the warmer sid, so i want to choose 6 colours on the colder side, plus a couple of earths. I prefer single pigments, so i can make my own clean mixes. I watched this a few times to narrow down my selection. The Holbein site has lots of info, but your swarhes "live and in colour" make a huge difference. Thanks again!
I agree every month I contemplate cancelling because I feel the price we are paying for student paint not great paper and two brushes I feel this is worth $45-50 not $70
I just recently started getting into painting, I didn’t even realize you had a painting channel Kori! ❤️I really like the Daniel Smith paints, I bought the green set, not realizing they were just 5ml, and I have 4 of the 15ml. I started putting some others in my cart but I think I might order the dot cards to use as a check list and rule out what colors I don’t want. Knowing me I will want to slowly collect them all. I also have a 24 pallet of Schmicke pallet, and a 5 tube set of granulating colors.
Thank you for this flip through! I appreciated the pause on the supplies page because I don't currently have any filbert brushes, so now I can order those when I get the book so I'm ready to dive in! I have bought several watercolor books from this publisher (Page Street) recently - they are really putting out some fantastic watercolor books.
It was interesting to see the difference between Winsor & Newton and Schminkle. They both looked the same even tho they are two different pigments. I think DS Q. Magenta is not what I would call a true Magenta.
Kourtney’s Paints-she’s got some hard-to-find’s and VERY generous dot cards for $1 (I got some of her new ones a few months ago, they peeled cleanly off the card..probably 1ml plus, squished them into 1/2 pans. Kourtney has a large selection of metallic/glittery as well as traditional paints. Kourtney gives pigment info as does Gregory below. I also got into mulling some of my own last year with my bestie (stunning PB33 being my favorite); but Gregory at Prodigal Son’s usually has some ready made full and half pans-quarter pans of some of the rarer, more expensive pigments. I’ll keep my mouth shut about Rick. 😖🤷🏼♀️
Renee is my absolute go to. I love her paints and can use a lot of them for commissions. I also love StayceeIllustrations. They are also amazing and beautiful. My favourite for absolutely outstanding Lightfastness is KJ Designs by Karen. Iulie are also fantastic for Lightfastness as they have a rating for each paint. Azure Colours and The Art Spirits are lovely and I’ve just tried Archie’s Paints for the first time and had good results too.
So you have to remember the name only means so much. Pigments are the primary resource, that said PR83 is a fugitive color and while they make their Alizarin Crimson with PR83 (Holbein), their Permanent Alizarin Crimson uses a different combo to avoid being fugitive.
Absolutely beautiful colours- those greens and the others that you showed . I like those unique names and the puns too 😅 Thank you😊 Edit- so sorry to ask, but have you tried watercolor ground I. Colouring books? I’m considering it but would love to know if it helps with bleed thru etc. Would be interesting to see. I’ve seen a few videos but not exactly as helpful as I hoped they would be unfortunately 🫣 thank you so much!
These are lovely, I love Roman Szmal. What do you use to create your swatching boxes. I have been looking for a stamp but with no luck thanks Shirley ❤
So I actually purchased my stamp set from Irit iritlandgrafartist.com/home but they are no longer in her store. You can definitely message her and ask though!
I watched your video, because someone on ebay put 18 colors in half pans and sold them for 20€, I always wanted to try these out and if I don't like a color I can always resell it,these are usually sooo expensive in Germany 😅
van gogh is a student paint so why is that in there ? rembrandt is the professional, in that brand. You should compare professional, not mix with student colours as thats not a true comparison.
The entire point of this is to compare brands that use the same name for their color and while yes that is a student brand sometimes it's nice to see what a student brand offers in comparison to not student grade and if that is why I include them
