I make comics with Clip Studio Paint. I worked as a traditional inker for over twenty-five years with companies like Dark Horse Comics, Now Comics, Antarctic Press, Chaos Comics, and Joe Book. I moved to digital around 2012-13. Currently, I'm the creator, writer, and inker for my ongoing comic book series Freaks & Gods. I successfully funded Tales of the Dark Tunnel (Freaks & Gods spin-off) with Kickstarter.

Chris, thank you so much for your videos. I am getting back into my drawing and love for comics on a new digital tablet and the process with your videos is stellar.
I recently got a used Huion 2.5 Display Tablet and love it. The fact that you're working on an Intuos tablet is VERY impressive to me: Much harder. Lovely work, Chris.
I bought my first Wacom tablet in the late 90s, so I'm used to looking at a monitor while working. I wonder if I had a display tablet if I could even use it. LOL. Also, when I worked traditionally, I hunched over and practically laid on my art table. So going digital was a health move as well. Thanks for watching!
I believe I was using the G-Pen for that page. I didn't make any changes to the brush, maybe a little tweak to brush tip pressure, but not much. I posted my setting for my other brush in the past, you can see that post here: ru-vid.com/show-UCOIzh2Drl2L7CbSDTmEIgEAcommunity?lb=UgkxUJT2JDSunMJvrEDf8L2FAAQ77RYU6ouW I hope that helps. Thanks!
No problem. I used the Real G-Pen a lot on this piece; that tool has two settings. The brush size and thickness (under the brush tip setting, it's an "S" curve). I didn't mess with the thickness setting, and I only slightly adjusted the brush size pressure sensitivity by pulling it down a tad. As for the tablet settings, I go with the default. I hope this helps.
In the tool properties, there is a check box for "Start from Center". You may have to click the little wrench in the corner of the tool window. I hope that helps. Let me know and thanks!
Hey there! I did a post about my brush settings a few months back. Here's the link: ru-vid.com/show-UCOIzh2Drl2L7CbSDTmEIgEAcommunity?lb=UgkxUJT2JDSunMJvrEDf8L2FAAQ77RYU6ouW I do have a lot of brushes at my Gumroad store, check that out here: chrisdreier.gumroad.com/ And finally, I have been using the Real G-Pen and the G-Pen a lot lately. Those are standard in CSP. I hope I answered your question. If not, let me know. Thanks for watching!
I had my Manga Studio EX4 for the longest time simply because I loved using this pen! Thank you for helping me adjust it for Clip Studio! Would this process work the same for Photoshop, if you don't mind me asking?
Glad I could help! Of course, you can ask. I don't think Photoshop has the same brush settings as Clip Studio Paint. I mean, it does have pressure sensitivity but the similarities stop there.
The Real G-Pen is set to pressure sensitivity. If you mean how it "snaps" to a point after each stroke, that is set in the "starting and ending" under the "Sub Tool Details". Check out this video where I go into detail on that setting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j_pcUErRWSk.html Thanks!
I'm heavy handed and I thought I needed to go to the heavier side for my tablet, but it never felt right. I finally went to other direction and it felt way better. Now I just got to figure out the right brush size.
Thanks! Chris did some alternate covers for my comic series Freaks & Gods! I love his style. He gave me permission to snag some images from his online album. I do have about 5-6 other pieces I'd like to ink lined up. In the meantime, I did ink this from Chris: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yZGxoDalAgI.html
Thanks! What's strange, is I've never seen this art before. It struck me! The moment I saw the four tentacles coming from the hood I thought of Cthulhu!
Fantastic work as always sir, first time I tried inking flames the rendering was quite clunky (gradually finding ease with myself on that😅). Any tips on how to approach flames?, thanks
Thanks! When I ink flames I try to be as loose as I can, I even hold my stylus lightly. The line weight is usually quite light and I vary the line weights only slightly to (hopefully) create shape. With fire, I'm not really concerned with weight or shadows. Basically, keep the lines flowing and don't think too much. I hope that helps. Let me know. 😀
From what I've noticed there really is no functional difference. It all comes down to the settings for each. I have many tools called "brush" because I adjusted the settings to act more like a traditional brush (like I used back when I inked on paper). I created (or adjusted) my tools to fit the feel of tools I used as a traditional inker. That's how I see them, brush, nib, marker... I think Clip Studio Paint puts anything that makes a "smooth" line in a pen category. If that helps.
Manga has a different size than what I show. But everything I talk about in this video will work for a manga page but you'd need to change the canvas size, that's all. Maybe A4 or A5. Thanks!
Are you drawing on a screen or on a drawing pad? I tried to draw on a wacom pad and found very hard as cant rotate the image. Wonder drawing on a screen makes it more easier.
Yes, I use a Wacom tablet with no display. I started using a Wacom tablet in the early 2000s so I'm very used to it. But it really depends on what you're comfortable with -- with or without a display is up to you. In Clip Studio Paint you can rotate the canvas with "R" but that means switching back and forth between tools. However, an earier way is to hold down space bar & shift together and you can rotate. Once you release you are right back to the brush or pen you were using. And to return to the original positions double tap while holding space bar & shift together. I hope this helps!
Thanks! I have many videos here on YT that talk about brush settings and shortcuts. Here's one I did a few weeks back that talks about the basics including some short cuts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OWnkEyeVUFk.html
