Were many of them from Waterford, Republic of Ireland?

Yes. There are many Irish settlers in Newfoundland. Someone once asked me if I was Irish when they heard me speak.

that was very good.my family here in Devon UK, traveled to and from newfoundland during the earliest days, never been there myself but it is very much part of my family and local history.Always interested to see Devon surnames used as place names in newfoundland.

That was an excellent presentation. My dad was a Newfoundlander who joined the land army in Scotland during WWII. There he met my mom and returned to Camada and settled in Brantford, Ontario. Because he died when I was young, I didn’t know much about the history of Newfoundland so this was really helpful. They really were a hardy people, weren’t they? What a difference from the young and woke generation of today.

1347. Go check out Riches Island with a good professional metal detector on the south coast. As a child, I listened to the elders and if you look at the full size Zena's map, you will see the tip of the cross rest on that island. Around that time, the Arc Of The Covent was stolen and believed to be taken to North America. The Vikings and the Knight of the Templars used that island for protection from enemies due to having 2 entrances in. You will at least find very old coins on that island. So if you're in that neighborhood of St.Alban's, check it out. You may be very surprised on what you find. 😉

You should also find stuff North/West of that island. Local folk called it Southern Point.

The Beothuks were also murdered frequently… ‘Indian hunters’ they were called. Also it was a notch in a man’s belt when he murdered one. There wasn’t even a law against killing indigenous people until a few years before the last one died! Our history records should own up to the violence and devastation of our racist ancestors. Sad really

you need to look up real history instead of the "all white man are evil" lie. did you know the "natives" didnt give up having slaves until around 1920. they enslaved everyone including the white man and woman. they were the cruelest of all slave owners. the natives themselves are the ones who tried to wipe other natives out. it wasnt white man doing all the killing. educate yourself instead of just turning against your own people.

Not a word about the Beothuk people?!! Cancel culture is not a new thing! White men have been ignoring or ‘cancelling’ indigenous presence and contributions for centuries… still doing it in this day and age! I will look at the further chapters with an open mind…. but I am not hopeful.

Yeah, I already made this argument and all I got was a "technically.." and a "thanks for watching."

It sounds like NewFoundland was a tough row for all, especially for the Beothuk after the Brit's began settling. Being a Beothuk then was much like being a Palestinian in Palestine today, which suggests strongly that crass and murderous racist behaviour was and remains the motivating factor of so many pompous-minded nations including Israel and it's primary supporter the United States, which had laws meant to irradicate every last Indigenous person across that land. It's all just so much of the same sad history repeating itself in front of us again and again..

Explains my determination despite the odds against me. My Newfoundland side of family are from Allan's Island, Lamaline. You can see St.Pierre et Miquelon on a clear day. Long line of Irish Catholic fishermen. Sadly my cousin had to give up on Cod fishing as catches did not cover fuel most days. Good series. Thank you.

Newfoundland's first settlement (at least by Europeans) was the viking village at what is now L'anse aux meadows on Newfoundland's west coast, so this video is factually inaccurate. If you want to talk about when indigenous peoples started settling on the island, it's even earlier.
@DreamhouseVideography
@DreamhouseVideography Год назад
The Vikings did spend time at L'anse aux meadows as they explored the world; however, when I speak of European settlement, I am referring to settlement that has lasted to the present day. Good point you make, though. Thank you for watching.

what a shame. my granfather john chynne was a contractor for bowaters, buy a contract build a camp and cook house hire about 30 men and work dawn to dark. my dad worked for him. pulling logs with horse then later tractor. hard work. another granfather died walking to a ship to go sealing. newfie is beautiful to look at but a hard place to survive.

Thank you Josh B! That looks like quite the investment opportunity for any up and coming hard core renovation team to make their starter dream home a reality. I really like the detail work on the cabinetry- it’ll be exciting for some lucky buyer to renovate. Still, we are still well and good with the home you helped find with us. We love our neighborhood, our place and all the cool updates we’re doing through time (last year we had solar panels installed!). Hoping that some lucky investors find that fixer-upper and that you enjoy a great new year! 🥂🥇🏡
