Thank you. We had a cabin on the shores of lake mooselookmeguntic, this summer is about putting food on the table, unable to go up north from MA, this really helped. This place is so amazingly beautiful and radiates with colorful energy. Beautiful embraces of a purplish hue of light off the sunset comes right into you, the energy up there is incredibly powerful. Much love

Impressive singing on any level; his voice too, is distinctive, rich and sonorous. His temperament apparently, was more suited for the musical stage. I would listen to his singing again.

Shlomo Hoffert my book "Alice Nielsen and the Gayety of Nations" has much about Cowles, who only gave two interviews. He was a huge star, best described by a critic, whenever he appears the audience settles back in their seats, knowing a thrill comes. www.lulu.com/shop/dall-wilson/alice-nielsen-and-the-gayety-of-nations/paperback/product-23387184.html

Kenneth Redpath my favorite perfect song, poet perfectly sung. Always a delight. Could not resist putting my Symphonic Film images to this, just because I never tire of hearing her with this masterpiece.

The tune Mr. Burns composed his lyric to, indicating so in both editions of his poems, was "I had a horse, I had nae mair," song #185 in the Scots Musical Museum. This air that Ms. Redpath sings, "Port Gordon," by Rory Dall O'Cahan, he indicated for publication in the Museum in 1792 - they preferred not to repeat tunes. "I had a horse" is still a better vehicle for the song, with trademark moments of prosody: he matches "waving grain" to a double grace note and the moorcock "springs" an octave! No one has yet recorded this melody. Gaughan's version is stunning but that melody has nothing to do with Burns.

Burns' words are the important thing, and this version, much as I think her a fine singer, would deter me from ever listening to Westlin Winds again !!! She gave nothing to these wonderful words.....with no understanding of what she was singing about. I am so glad this was not my introduction to this amazing song !

It's the 2nd of August in the Pacific NW. 20 miles South of Seattle Washington and 60 miles from the top of Mount Rainier..14,410 .. It's 93 degrees in the hottest summer I can remember...I climbed Mount Rainier 36 years ago, August 1, 1979.. The world gets me down... too much conflict in the world... Things are not going very well for the Earth...I think back to cool Scotland...To old friends now dead, to family who has passed on...Are the old days always better... With most of my life in the rearview mirror I would say so... This song cheer me... a wonderful song by a sweet and clear voice from afar...Jean died almost a year ago... but the warmth of her soul comes through.... God Bless All Here...

And yes, indeed, Bertha Waltzinger is mentioned in Barnabee's "My Wanderings." There's a photo of her (page 262), and Barnabee even tells a little, funny story about an occurence during one of the performances of "The Maid of Plymouth" (page 376, 377) with her and Jessie Bartlett Davis.

Bertha Waltzinger (1870-1927) became a member of the Bostonians in 1892. She sang in “Robin Hood” (Annabel + Maid Marian), “The Ogallallas” (Edith) and “The Maid of Plymouth” (Primrose). She left the Bostonians in 1895 to join the “De Wolf Hopper Company,” where she sang “Isabel” in the world premiere of Sousa’s operetta “El Capitan” at the Boston Theatre in 1896. I am from Germany and a very distant relative of Bertha (my name is Stefanie Walzinger). Bertha’s parents were German immigrants.

I don't recall her name in the period of my research (1894--1898-ish). The Bostonians stopped singing about 1905. The early recordings of that period are indexed.... Edison is a major source. Barnabee may have mentioned her in his autobiography. What's your interest in her?

Thanks. I was in Moravia and Prague last year and visited the Moravian Church there. I have visited Czech many times. I grew up in a 1700s-founded Moravian town in North Carolina. The history of freedom and cooperation is the best human tradition. My talk at Bohemian Hall in NYC on the Moravian community builders has been published in Czech and was on Czech radio. The Presbyterian Church's constitution, its Rules Of Order, came from the Moravian Brothers. Many groups have organized using it.

Marian, John Wesley was a MEMBER of the Moravian Church (Fetter Lane, London) and trained as a Moravian missionary before breaking away. He took "all the women and half the men" when he left. I suspect it was his inability to make headway with Count Zinzendorf whose protection allowed the Moravians to survive. In American, Herrnhut is said the First exile community and is focused on the German leadership. Today I realize there was more to the story, of course. And that is the point. Enjoy....

Hi Dall, May I ask you if you ever heard of soprano Bertha Waltzinger, who became a member of "The Bostonians" in the early 1890? I wonder if it might be possible that her singing was recorded at one point. Any idea? Stefanie
