BEHIND THE GREATEST RACER OF ALL TIME When it comes to MTB XC racing, Nino Schurter is undoubtedly the Greatest Of All Time. With 10 Elite World Champion Titles, a full set of Olympic Medals and an incredible 35 World Cup Wins, he has been there and won it all. But who is Nino beyond the races, beyond the victories and beyond the records? What does it take to be the best, to stay the best, and what will it take to stop him? From the racing scene to life beyond the tape, we go behind the scenes to uncover the man behind the racer.
Reminds me of my dad. My dad introduced me to cycling at a young age. My dad passed away in 2017 but I am truly thankful for his encouragement and support. Nino, you are not only one of the best athletes but an incredible human being. You are an inspiration to young and old.
Here's what I don't like about Pidcock. This may or may not make sense to some people. He cherry picks races on his calendar, and uses other races to train. Let me give you an example: He used road racing on team Ineos in spring to train for a few MTB races, then rode (most of) the Tour de France, and used it as training to win in the Olympics. He may do the same with the World's, which he did last year. How does this work? Because road cycling actually builds better pure cardio fitness. By doing something like riding not to win the Tour, but simply as a teammate for others, but not really being a domestique, and skipping most of the World Cup, it benefits him for specific MTB races he wants to enter. Granted, it definitely takes skill to win MTB WC races, no doubt. But even in those Tom makes up nearly all of his time on the climbs, where his fitness is simply better than everyone else because of his training. Being on a primarily road team, with all of their resources - and a heavily funded, highly powerful team (Ineos) at that, is also more beneficial. Anyone who has ever been close to cycling knows there's simply a hell of a lot more money in, and being thrown at, road cycling. More money = better training, better gear, better doctors, better everything. This is why I doubt Tom will ever win the UCI World Cup, because doing so takes total commitment, an entire season of commitment, and he won't do that.
Such an inspirational person. Absolute fighter and truly the MTB GOAT. I love the inclusion of his daughter in the racing. As a father of two girls it’s amazing. Such a bond between you. Keep going N1no we adore you. Rooting for you in Paris!
