Jerry is so comfortable & natural with this tune you could easily think it was his own. Shout out for John Kahn on bass. I saw them at Bottom Line NYC a number of times during this era, & they did this often. Another shout out for Merl Saunders. RIP all
Very cool! If you search for the one that was originally contained on The Keystone CDs, the overdub by David Grisman is gorgeous. I love both. The one I have here is from a soundboard. When I heard Jerry's finger picking on that passage, I was mesmerized.
Is amazing how in that era the organ piano was almost obligatory. between the years of Procol Harum in the late 60s through this period with Garcia..It is the Organ what carries the song almost like the beat of a drummer
This is from July 10, 1973. I highly recommend getting a hold of Garcia & Saunders's "The Keystone Complete" It contains everything played on July 10 & 11, 1973. One caveat, though, the "Keystone Complete" only contains the Grisman overdub of Positively 4th Street. I love both versions, but Jerry's subtle work is wonderful and should be in everyone's collection.
I was there also and remember how incredibly hot it was, it was a great and very long show. 52 years ago. It was the same GD incarnation as the Europe 72 album. Good times
Blsitering hot and a hell of a lot of fun. I was flying high and didn't know how sun burnt I was until we stopped at gas station to take a leak. What a blast!
Thank you! I had fun putting this together. Here are several more of my slideshows. I was there for that great jam on 7-16-72 concert and at 6-11-76 for that gorgeous Stella Blue.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VRKucXltaRw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xZIpAYVzI8c.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F83VxyDtIC8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OVJB_QNMjSU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x6TY7DSPLYA.html
I'd been there for a nice number of Bird Songs in 1973. My first live one was on 4-25-71. They played it at my top favorite GD concert on 9-27-72. That was quite a night!
Jerry on bajo is fun stuff. Before the Dead is a terrific box set of early Jerry on banjo and on acoustic in different bands. All three Old and In the Way releases are excellent. There are song overlaps, but as in true GD fashion they all vary.
I’m now on a mission to personally bump the plays from 44k to 45k all with my own listening. Wistful , haunting story sung by Jerry like it was about him and someone who broke his heart
