to be fair, Bantings only discovered animal insulin. Wherein you had to slaughter a fetal cow and extract insulin from their pancreas. It had loads of drawbacks, you could never meet the demand, costs were too high (yes, even higher) and animals proteins would cause host of allergies. It wasn't until Genentech discovered how to make insulin in bacteria that it became cheap to produce. It took a lot of effort back in the day when cloning and sequencing were not mainstream. Nobody would ever invest in pharma if things would be subjected to regulation like this. Better to park money in something like tesla.
