On Jul 8 2024, I did the drive from Lewiston, ID to Buckhorn overlook via the Joseph creek road -> Horse creek road (starts at WA-OR border as per Google maps) -> NF-4680 -> Buckhorn road. The stretch between Asotin to OR border is gravel road and FWD car can do it. From there on it gets little more difficult with narrow path and lot of smaller rocks. I did it in my 2019 VW Atlas stock except Rim and Tires (Rim changed from 20" to 17" and 245/70/R17 AT tires). I had to air down and take it really slow (avg about 7 MPH for about 25 miles) to avoid scrapping the bottom and prevent the car from bouncing too much. VW did the rest without breaking a sweat while loaded to max payload (Family of 4 with camping gear, 20 Gallons of water etc).
Did you start this drive from Asotin up north. If so how is the section of the road (Joseph Creek & Horse Creek roads)where the pavement ends and connects to Cold springs road.
Last time I drove Horse Creek north to Asotin was in 2016 so my info would be very dated. This time around I was more interested in getting from Cold Springs to Buckhorn Overlook as it was late in the day. Thank for the question.
I think owls are full of mischief. I cleaned the aviary of 3 Barred Owls when I was a volunteer, and the 3 of them were always watching for opportunities. To do what ? Swoop down on another volunteer. We had to wear a hard hat because they got somebody in the past . My favorite juvenile delinquents.
I've been watching GHOs raise their chicks here going on 20 years. This is the first time I've seen 3 and they all seem pretty easy going so far. Momma lets me know if she is around by soft hooting. I'm videoing their shenanigans as they learn. Thanks for your comment.
