I’ll never forget this year I was 21 have followed souths my whole life remember watching replays in the years prior to this the rare times we would win thinking we may loose 😂. I remember most the round 16 game in Newcastle I was at the game we were up 12-0 went down 25-12 and won 28-25 with a ben rogers try in the final minutes. Having lived in Newcastle my entire life and being witness to many flogging at the hands of Newcastle during the John’s era and on the receiving end of sometimes less than friendly banter over the years It is fair to say I returned it all back to a parochial Newcastle crowd that evening
I remember growing up Souths were one of the easy beats. It was rare to see them win a game or win two games in a row. When they made the finals in 2007 for the first time since 1989 it was like winning a grand final for them.

@@RugbyLeagueHistory true Wests do actually have a worse history have 21 wooden spoons & 5 premierships to Parra 14 spoons & 4 premierships yes im counting Wests Tigers as Wests cuz they’re Wests but also would say their history counts for Balmain as well
I don't count Wests Tigers as the same club as Balmain and Western Suburbs. For me they are clearly a new team that merged together and started fresh. I do however consider St. George Illawarra to be a continuation of St. George, mainly because its a joint-venture not a merger. Secondly, ever since the joint venture happened, the club is so heavily St. George centric it isn't funny. The badge, the name, the colours, nicknames, history, the goings on behind the scenes, it's all St. George. Illawarra contribute very little to the partnership, they don't even really have a stake in the club anymore, their 50 percent was bought by WIN Group a few year ago.
@@RugbyLeagueHistory fair least you agree St.George is a continuation cuz i was born halfway between Georges River (St.George) & Bankstown so i’m a St.George fan
Along side Mark O'Neill was John Skandalis, a workhorse of a player who I remember being a great defender. Even coming back to play a further 19 games for the Tigers in 09-10 after playing two years at Huddersfield which I didn't know about until looking it up lol.
I were just looking at Luke Brooks and how many games he has played now. He's officially broken the record for the most games played by anyone since 1908 and still not a finals appearance. O'Neill played 219 games before he finally got a chance in 2005. Brooks is on 221.
@@RugbyLeagueHistory Nah nah, not the main list, great work on that. I meant the honorable mentions. No harm done, I mentioned him, but I believe at the time Mark O'Neill had Skandalis beaten by like 20 games or so :)
It would be 51,687, but can't afford footy games, not the ticket prices, the damn food, well $60 a pop for a ticket is quite the punch to me pocket too lol... But thanks for reigniting the rivalry for me, fuck Parra LMAO... Also fuck that Salary Cap 2002 issue XD
The rivalry will always be there, always. Even if Canterbury and Parramatta never played finals again or won anything, both teams and sets of supporters hate each other.
