Remember watching this live late at night in Sydney. One of the greatest sporting feats I have ever witnessed. What struck me was that when he touched there was no other swimmer on screen! Incredible swim. Monstered the world record.
Jason do you have the men's 200 IM (Jani Sievinen WR) and 400 IM (Tom Dolan WR) from the 1994 world champs? I would love to see those races for the first time.
Kieren Perkins is my hero in the sport of swimming. Nobody swims like him. I know some of you are saying Thorpe or Hackett but Kieren Perkins doesn’t just break world records he absolutely destroyed world records. He’s the greatest distance swimmer of all time. #superfish
The dude that got second has the worst looking fly I’ve ever seen. This man has a one beat kick. He drags his legs for the pull rather than kicking. Idk who let this man use that stroke
@@ashwinharish3475 yeah, who swims a two fly with a one beat kick? It’s not that long of a race lol. In fact Swimming with a trash technique like that wastes more energy than just swimming normal. Instead of using your legs to get on top of the water he’s dragging his whole body though the water with just his arms. Plus he was a world class swimmer. I’m sure he could just train his legs harder if it’s that much of an issue. You can be frugal without swimming like an idiot. Nobody good would be caught dead swimming like that today especially in the Olympic final
@@Soltani88 200 fly is not that long of a race??? hahaha I have swum butterfly at the Asian level and I know even the seasoned swimmers dread the 200 butterfly . It's a nightmare . It's not an easy race. It's never " oh, its JUST a 200 m fly". LOL 200 fly along with 400 im are the two hardest races in swimming. There are some present day world champion swimmers like Sun Yang who are extremely frugal when it comes to using their legs.... Also, It's 200 fly - it's not a sprint. So it's okay. His technique is not as bad as you are making it to be
@@ashwinharish3475 actually the two hundred free is the hardest race. You sound like a novice. Most hardened swimmers would agree the 2 free is the most difficult and tricky race to swim. If you know how to swim fly it’s not that hard of a race. It’s definitely not a 100 fly tho I’ll give you that. And Yea his technique is definitely as bad as I’m making it out to seem. Seriously age group swimmers are the only people that should get a pass for swimming like that. If you knew anything about how to swim fly well you’d realize how awful his dudes stroke is. It would be like swimming a two free with a two beat kick. And the two fly really isn’t that long of a race. If you know your shit you’d know how to pace it. Clearly you don’t know what you’re talking about. If you’re an “Asian level swimmer” whatever that means then that explains why America is by far the best swimming country in the world. No competent swimmer would freak out about a 2fly like you’re suggesting. Also sun Yang should be banned from the sport for life JS
False starts in swimming were so annoying that they had to go to an automatic DQ. Reaction times are normally 0.6-0.8 seconds, so if you can try to time it, that would give you a big advantage.
The most amazing thing about this race was that Perkins was the only swimmer in shot on the screen when he was finishing...that’s how far back the others were. Then Thorpe came along four years later.
These are the infamous world championships where the Chinese were exposed for being cheats. One of their swimmers was caught for bringing in HGH and wound up getting kicked out. Of course, the Chinese doping program had been going on for years, especially after the former East German coaches went to China after the wall came down and they were out of work.
correct, I believe it was one of the two Yuan Yuan's (females) on the team who's bag was stopped and checked at Customs at the flight landing in Australia from China, before they were to connect on to Perth. Keep in mind how fiercely vigilant Australia is when it comes to being caught carrying or possessing PED's, namely on of the first nations to go after anyone trying to enter with HgH: Sylvester Stallone, while Down Under for a a film he was involved with, was caught at Customs with vials of Hgh and was required to be detained in the Australia for at least 2-3 weeks, or however long was needed in their legal process for him to appear before a Magistrate and plead his case or chose financial penalty, which is what I believe he went with. And of course in both his case and Yuan Yuan's, it came down to a poorly, or carelessly packed piece of luggage without any attempt at concealing from the xrays the vials of hgh. Yuan I did to some degree feel for her, as we later learned it was admitted by Chinese authorities that it was not only NOT her bag she was carrying- there was nothing else but hgh vials in it; but also it was packed by someone from the Chinese delegation and she was told to carry the bag. The officials tried to enter the country with enough vials to supply the enter swim team from china for a 7 or 8 days of competition, and she was innocently unaware that she was the "courier."
