Broad Shoulders Farm is a small farm and market garden in Sutherlin, VA, USDA Zone 7B.

Since 2018 we've been bringing to farmers markets seasonal, colorful eggs from heritage poultry and baked goods made with local, organic flour.

All our birds enjoy safe, lifetime employment-roos, too-and work with us as we strive to grow the cleanest, tastiest, most nutrient-dense food in Southside VA.

Are you bachelor flocks able to see the hens? I have heard it's important for them not to see each other which can be difficult.

@@sarahmackenzie8411 for two months out of the year-May and September-they share a common fence line as the Laying Flock rotates through the orchard, but the rest of the year they’re unlikely to see any hens.

That Toad loves living in the danger zone! I have some fence boards on the ground in my garden paths (I’m lazy and haven’t collected them) and toads love living under them.

And the snake will take care of rodents in the area and if it gets enough food it shouldn’t harm the hens.

For those who do eat their chickens, I raised a few ranger type chickens one year along with a bunch of “frypan bargains” and it was sad how the rangers seemed to want to do more than they physically could. Compared to the active heritage cockerels they were very physically limited. I can’t imagine how sad the “normal” broilers would look. These Delaware broilers look much more like what a meat bird should in my opinion! I have some Delaware hatching eggs on the way from a different hatchery, if any hatch I hope they are as nice looking as these!

One of the saddest farm experiences I had was with a farmer “raising”cornish cross and they were just sad blobs unable to walk, flystruck, and missing feathers. Granted, these should have been harvested weeks before-I think we were at week 12 or 13-but it was just so sad. In 3 months they go from active chick to meat sack. Good luck with your Delaware chicks, and thanks for sharing!
