the loudness is a forgoten efect that was a must have ,for low volume listening abnd that might be popwerfull as in other old amplifiers i have, and volume loudness even better
Upgraded tweeters? The original AR dome tweeters had better dispersion and flatter frequency response than those replacement tweeters. If you want "bright" speakers from that era as opposed to flat response speakers that's fine but it would be easier to just buy some JBLs as opposed to modifying AR speakers to sound like JBLs. ;)
I bought this two months ago, a similar model but Japanese 100V model. At first turn on it produces chi…chi…cha…cha…noise. I immediately knows what causing this. If the machine has not been turn on for a long time. the electrolytic liquid in the capacitor melted the aluminum oxide (insulator) in the capacitor causing electric currents leakage . The way to solve this is very easy, I just need to switch on the player and play cassette tape for few hours, with the amplifier turn off because you don not want to listen the noice. The tape deck will continue making those chi…chi…cha…cha..noise for few hours but that will no causing any harm to the machine. After few hours the noise will disappear because applying voltage to the capacitor will reconstruct the aluminum oxide (insulator) and stop electric current leakage. After this you just need to switch on the player and play cassette every day for about at least one hour every day.
i have 5 HH scotts from 222d to 299d and 233d .. I am gointo to restore them all soon ,So i am now trying to get the parts to start .. have already painted the transformers ....Whewre did you get those knobs ? i love them ..
Successor to the Model 6, not the Model 5. The Model 5 is a 3 way, the 6 and 23 are 2 way. My model 23 speakers have become my favorite ones, besting Kef 103.2 speakers that were my favorite speakers from 1984 until I found my Model 23s about 10 years ago.
I bought some 23’s in 1975 to replace some BOSE 301’s powered by a Marantz 2230. Sadly I sold all that gear upon receipt of an assignment to Germany with the USAF knowing I could build my dream audio system there. I remember the EAST COAST vs WEST COAST sound battles and after hearing some JBL’s I got hooked on the WEST COAST sound. I still have the L-100s I bought in 1976.
Nice video, if you do another one show it being turned on and turned off. You needn't wait the full minute or whatever, you can just just say how long it takes. That way we can hear the turn on/off thump or whatever else an item does, without learning the hard way. Aim a heat probe at the hottest points to show how hot it gets after maybe 30 minutes.
I've had KLH mini since the early 2000's with several receivers coming and going and the nice one foot height and 5 inch width makes it so I can set them on a shelf or stand or from the ceiling. Six of them and one KLH center. Can't kill them! The last receiver was a TX-NR757 and soon I will put a TX-NR6100 in place to drive them. Wish they were still available in stores. I see that the new owners of KLH are trying to make them into an out of reach high priced brand.
Maybe the reason he isn’t responding is because he realized many of these AR speakers had long production runs and this model in particular changed woofer and tweeter. I think it even changed the crossover at some point. Just because your AR4x speakers woofer has ribs on it doesn’t mean the next will.
