Tony was born in Boston in 1946. From age 10, he studied the upright acoustic bass, playing a few years later in combos and classical ensembles. After switching to electric bass in the late 60’s, he moved to New York where, after a brief stint in a band called Aha, the Attack of the Green Slime Beast (!) he played on a number of recordings, then chose in the late 70’s to focus on playing live and touring.
Overtime, he has recorded and toured with Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Frampton, Seal and many more, and has released four solo albums and many collaborative albums.
He helped popularize the 10 string Chapman Stick and the NS electric upright bass, was the first player of the Steinberger headless bass, created Funk Fingers - modified drumsticks that attach to the fingers, and released five books.
