Commission painter and tabletop wargames enthusiast. I make simple painting tutorials for Warhammer 40,000, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop, as well as the wider world of mini painting.
Wow...just wow! Incredible how you managed to accomplish such level of detail with just the starter set paints! This is what GW should do with their video tutorials instead. Thank you for the step by step guide. Definitely learned something new today as I am new to the hobbie. Can't wait to try this out. Keep it up!
I just got started painting war hammer models but I just love the look of Noggle and the tirades I hope I spelled those right but I am having a really hard time finding a video that shows someone actually painting those particular models and I was wondering if you could do a video that shows painting those particular models
Bought this set today, got some brushes and a pallette mat coming from amazon tomorrow for my first attempt at painting. Will be using your video as a step by step guide
It's not so much what I'd be interested to see you paint as how, my thought is how does it come out if you go for a very contemporary painting technique with the older colors so something like prime a blood angel with a purple or magenta then give it a 45 degree zeinithal with a white followed by a straight down zenithal of a yellow then go over all that with the same red you used here, maybe mix your bright silvers into your black to edge highlight a lot of the black metal bits. I'm also curious how the transparency of the classic paints handles if thinned down for an airbrush. I like your use of just thinning layer paints down rather than relying on premade shades/washes but the fact that it is always black or black plus base color while retro/classic is obviously limiting. So go all out, but use the old mostly brighter paints as your pallet.
There are many videos that compare the classic HM-2 guitar pedal to the countless clones that were built after the HM-2 went out of production. Nerds are the best people. =)
Nerds are the best. We also all love the things from our childhood and want to find the modern equivalent. (even if a lot of the nostalgia is just looking back with rose coloured glasses)
That was a really nuce video! I wonder, did GWs recipe for paints change when they transitioned to the newer pots with black lids in I think the 2000s or something? Those were what I started with and many of them were pretty nice
I think once the paints went through the name change to the current names the paints did change. The coverage became a lot better, needing fewer layers to achieve solid colour. The current GW line is really good. I mostly just use GW paints for my minis, they are easy to find, consistent across batches and work really well with my painting style.
@@DrunkOnTeaUK I'm still mostly using GWs paints, but I have started experimenting with other paints, mostly because my town doesn't have a proper hobby shop and I didn't want to go all the way to a different city. the one colour I really miss is Teracotta, I don't think GWs XV-88 fits well and there are remarkably few equivalent paints I'm aware of, none of which sold at FLGS near me.
There doesn't seem to be a lot out there that works as a replacement for terracotta. XV88 is a nice brown, but it's lacking the red tone. Have you tried Tau Light Ochre and mixing a bit of that in, it's not great but it does make it a bit closer.
I have been doing testing to see what paints are the closest to these classic ones, it should be up next week, then you can also have the bright and vibrant paint schemes on your minis!
I have some more Nurgle videos to make, I'll remember to add some Gutalax to the next one.... or maybe a Gutalax inspired Plaguebearer..... try and emulate the look and the sound of the band in one model.
My number 1 tip to newcomers, just put paint on the model and thin your paints. The quicker you learn to thin your paints the faster you realize it doesn't matter if you "mess up". Thin paints wont obscure details, and you can paint over quite a few layers of thin paint before you start to lose details on your models.
Looks awesome and obviously great considering the challenge. Definitely looking to paint mine more classic white so would love to see how you’d do that and what paint mix and primer / base you’d use
Thank you! I've been thinking about going through the chapters and painting them with a full rage of paints. For white scars, I would prime with white, base coat with corax white, pin shade with either thinned down celesta grey or maybe even apothecary white contrast. Then, edge highlight with White Scar, that should give a good crisp white look.
I find about 7 or 8 paints to be a good number. Nuln oil always makes life easier than thinning down black for a shade. I also find it useful to have a highlight colour for power armour, that way every model across the army will have the same colours, unlike the variation you get when mixing paints.
The clippers do come in the introductory starter set, and these Marines don't need glue as they are push fit. You can use a base paint as a "primer" as long as you cover the entire model it will give the other paints something to stick to. A specific primer is better, but for a beginner or single model, using paint will work, you just need to ensure you get full coverage or it will flake off.
I bought this set and finished my first model, using this tutorial. Thank you. It was super helpful. I cannot wait to finish my first space marine (which just needs highlights) following your other tutorial.
I'm so glad I could help! I hope you've enjoyed painting your first models! If ever you are thinking of expanding your collection and getting some other models you want some ideas for how to paint, let me know!
I bought a Leviathan box yesterday. Maybe a few different colour combo's of termagaunt would be nice. But other than that, I'm just enjoying your spacemarine videos and learning to paint (with my starter kit).
I love this, id be interested in a longer paint time for necrons if im not in a rush to get a more on the box scheme. Id love s full video of a Szarekhan paint tutorial with some basic paints we can use. So far my cart is sitting close to 100$ in necron paint.
I have painted a Dark Angle using just 5 paints ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uad0El7ptX8.html If you would like to see one done with a full set of paints and advanced techniques, I can do that.
@@DrunkOnTeaUK just after I posted that comment it occurred to me, being new to your channel, to search, and I found where you have done dark angels. But I would love to see one done up with a lot of colors. The dark angels are my first passion after discovering Warhammer just a couple of months ago
Hero Quest and Space Crusade. I only owned Space Crusade, but 2 friends had Hero Quest and we'd alternate between games and campaigns. I think Hero Quest Fantasy models have truly remained excellent for modern standards, and the real furniture pieces was a very unique addition to board games at the time.
HeroQuest and Space Crusade were such good games! Those old HeroQuest models still look really good, even today. My friend still has his copy of Space Crusade, and we played a few games a couple of weeks ago. The game still plays really well, some of the rules seem a bit old fashioned, but it's still fun, all these years later.
@@DrunkOnTeaUK I got Battlemasters and Advanced HeroQuest years later. AHQ ruleset just didn't have the charm of classic HQ. The hero miniatures were really nice but there was very little variety for the rest of the contents in the box. There's a fan made ruleset for AHQ (just an expansion of the classic rules, using the standard skull/shield dice) that makes the 2nd game more enjoyable.
finaly after about 4 other tutorials for the starter set using things that are not in the starter box here is finaly one thats only useing the starter set and nothing else THANK YOU i am just starting colecting never painted anything and between zero expirience and a language barrier i have no idea what a drybrusch even exaktly is ( used in gw guide) so just thanks
Thank you! Welcome to the hobby! Hopefully, you enjoy painting painting your first minis! There are quite a lot of videos out there that use a lot of advanced techniques and equipment ( the number of videos that will tell you that you "need" an airbrush or wet pallette is crazy), but its possible to achieve good results with just practice, a few paints and basic equipment. Please let me know how you get on with painting your first models!
I am new to Warhammer and your videos are by far the best I have come across so far. I just did my Tyranids and they look amazing. If at all possible I would love to see a video from you painting Custodes.
Glad to see you figure also has a dodgy arm piece, thought I might have put mine together slightly wrong but with this being an 8 month old video I'm guessing it might be a sprig mould issue. Still I'm incredibly happy I found this video, just getting back into 40k and got this set about a week or two ago and been looking at other paints but seeing this I'm gunno try out the highlighting on my marines first. I'm using this set as a template or starting point for my painting, using it as a base of sorts to see how far I can go and any traits I pick up.
A lot of the push fit models don't go together amazingly well. Sometimes the pegs are a bit to long, and clipping a small amount from the end will give a better fit. But also there are some parts like the arm that will just always be a pain. It is a useful skill to learn how to mix paints to create your own highlight colours, but if you are going to buy some extra paints, Calgar blue is what I normally use for highlighting Ultramarines, it will save you a lot of time mixing, and ensure that every model is highlighted with the same colour. Welcome back to the hobby!
GW paints are expensive, they are good though. 5 paints is a pretty good amount for starting, over time you will no doubt grow your collection of paints, and eventually end up with loads of them!
How about a fire team of Tau painted like Star Wars 501 Clones? Or, Guardsmen done up like Star Trek TOS Star Fleet (yellow command, red sgt, blue enlisted)?
The Alien collour scheme features a brownish tint on the carapace highlights and some heavy use of glossy varnish on the "armoured bits" of the body. This way looks cool too, but it´s not very reminiscing of the film. Still, a good paint job and a pleasure to watch. Try doing a Hive Tyrant painted as the alien queen next time.
It was my own take more on the "style" of Alien. All the green lighting in the movie, the green grow from computer screens, the green in films title and poster, etc. A Hive tyrant as the Queen would be pretty cool, maybe I'll paint it in a more "true" scheme.
I've been thinking about doing Chaos Space Marines for a while now, so hopefully, I'll get one painted soon. Any particular legion of CSM you are interested in?
More will be coming! I love the MESBG models. If I ever try my hand at battle reports they will probably be Middle Earth, as it is the best game GW make.
I've been getting into Underworlds recently and want to paint my models, I'm glad I've finally found a video using the kit I'm looking at for practice and using only the stuff in it (sans the model holder) Thanks for showing even an amateur that's never held a brush before can do a decent job
Thank you! With a little practice and some patience, you should be able to paint models you are happy with pretty quickly. The only thing I would say to get is a cheap pack of brushes from amazon or your local hobby store. It's good to have a few different sizes around, but with cheap ones, when they get ruined or too hooked, you can just throw them away and get some new ones. Welcome to the hobby, and have fun painting the Underworlds models, they are some really nice looking minis.
The assassin as spawn is an interesting idea, I'll have to keep that in mind. I've been thinking about trying some cell shaded paint schemes, it will probably take a while to work on and get the look correct, but it's been in my "to do" list for a little while, so keep an eye out!
