Hi from france, i buy recently an e34 and i have the same problem on my dashboard and i'm so happy to see you're video i try this soon ! Big thank you !
Had the car for 3 years and loved it very much. The interior and sound system are very decent. Driving wise it's a blast, fun and agile. Feels like you're glued to the road.
@@pieterw Recently purchased a 2021 F54 S All4 and it is a blast to drive. Decent amount of interior space (Sufficient for a family of four). Will try to hold on to mine for as long as I can. Missus and I fell in love with the Mini brand. Will look into getting a two door hardtop when the kids are in their booster seats - It’ll be our city get around car. Clubbie will be the road trip car.
If I don't have the code for my radio will it not allow me to see the miles like it's broken but it's not actually because I see it like act like it wants to work but then it something says no and then It only asks for the code
Ahh the youtube algorithm strikes again. Looking over my project car a couple of days ago i saw the lower display wasn't working. I thought that's a problem for another day. Now i know what to do, and i need to buy a soldering iron.. thank you!
Great work! Very well done. Question: My partial odometer don't store the information after turn off. The total is displayed correctly, but the partial always resets.. any tips? Thanks!
Hellow Brother … glad to see your restoration video . Iam actually on a same restoration project of a bmw E34 . I need your help to source some parts. How can I connect you ?
Thx for the upload. My grandfather is turning 92 in May, he own one of these back in the day. This would make a great gift. Hard to find ideas when your in your 90s. Lol
Hello, First of all thanks for the tuto. Do you remember the specifications of the old condesators? I bought what you proposed, but the originals mounted on the dashboard have different spec.🤔
Hi John, thanks for reaching out! If you look at 4:57 you can see the values of the capacitors. My electronics skillset is not that big, so I'm afraid I won't be able to reply to your question regarding the condensators. Best of luck!
Thanks very much for the clear guidance on how to replace these capacitors. I have an 89 535i and your unit with the gray back looks identical to mine. I seem to have the same situation as connor zoso. All my gages work okay, and even the warning displays, but the odometer is extremely dim to the point of being invisible under all but the darkest conditions. I can solder and would attempt to replace the capacitors but wouldn't know how to troubleshoot the board. But I was wondering, could the dash bulbs just be shot? Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated!
Hi, once you have removed the dash you could first try to visually inspect all light bulbs. Also some more info about capacitors in general can be found here: shorturl.at/lmnDN (iFixit article). Feel free to share you results in the comments!
Hi, great video! my dash cluster works 100% in my e34 apart from the numbers showing the mileage have gone extremely dim! (i thought they were just totally gone until i looked very closely) is it worth pulling it out and replacing all capacitors for this issue? thanks
Hmmm i'm not 100% sure. You can always start with pulling the dash and just inspecting the motherboard. If you see some weird stuff, you can replace them, if you don't you could look a bit further if you're not comfortable with soldering.
@@pieterw thanks for the reply! Hmm I think I could do the capacitor replacement like in this video but not confident with much else as I’m very new to it and not certain what I’d be looking at on the board! I’ve heard from people that you can mess up your dash quite easily by poking around in there as well so that would put me off haha. It’s strange that it’s just the mileage indicator that has gone dim though so I was just wondering if it could be bad capacitors causing the problem.
Good day My Petrol gauge and temperature gauge goes off when I accelerate and back on when I let go of the accelerator padel. What do you think may be the problem. Your response will be highly appreciated
Hi Keenan, I don't know for sure. But if I had to guess, try and check your alternator? It seems like you're using all the power provided when accelerating and don't have enough for other parts of the car. But that's just a guess, I'm still learning about cars and only have limited experience :)
How do you turn the wheel while the car is off? What about the steering lock because the car is off? Did you put the keys in the ignition to give battery while cluster was disconnected so you could move the steering?, can it reset my speedometer if I do that.
Hi Mihael, I would look into replacing the display for that one. Like you can see here : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PeZ2LCSb9y4.html&ab_channel=Minitools
The instrument cluster needles on all gauges on my 1990 BMW 525I go absolutely bonkers when first starting the car in cold weather. The colder it is, the crazier they go: speedometer and RPM gauges spin around, gas and fuel gauges bounce back and forth. The temp gauge is only gauge that is normal. After driving the car and letting it sit for a time, gauges work normally. My mechanic said it has something to do with the grounds--his 525I does the same thing. Can this be fixed?
Electeical components operate differently in different temperatures. So an old capacitor could behave weird. You could try it with this fix, let us know the result!
@@pieterw I have the cluster out and going to try your recommended fix. Do you have a recommendation for where to find the capacitors? Also, Is that a u for the part number, as in 22uF 62V and 220uF 25V? I assume you are in Germany.
@@pieterw My E34 circuit board from my 1990 E34 525i doesn't look like yours. I would send you a picture, but don't know how on U-Tube. I will also try through e-mail. Is it worth trying to fix this or give up?
I think I have the same issue. Only speedo and tacho works (tacho incorrectly reads as 0rpm on idle but still moves when you rev). Also OBC reads "PPPP"
Can u give me link of all lights (bulbs) of bmw e34 spedometter lights my lights are poor and in interior light of cockpit those RED ones all lights how t ochange that and which bulbs are going there.. Thx!
Hi Leo! Unfortunately, I have no experience with the later model clusters. The voltage is overall not that important, as long as it's big enough... The circuit will charge the capacitor to the required voltage. The important part is that the capacitance is the same.
