I’m a watercolorist, knitter, crocheter, sewist, and all around artist and crafter. I feel it is important to use our hands in the physical world and that creativity is essential for basic happiness. I encourage everyone to experiment and not be afraid to make mistakes. We are our hardest judges and it’s difficult to recognize the beauty we create, so keep making and give the results some room to breathe before you judge them. I love the writings of Sister Corita Kent and Lynda Barry. I teach all the above in the San Francisco Bay Area, and share my discoveries and processes in a monthly newsletter, on my blog, on instagram and my fiber arts at www.ravelrycom under EatBetter.

This answers my questions. I am a newbie in watercolor. I don’t like granulation although i know that many people like them for texture. I have mostly Winsor and Newton paints and then for a project I bought a couple of DS paints and did not like the granulation of the two paints. Thanks

Have you doodled lately? What combination of materials would you like to see me use next?

What are your experiences with granulating colors like ultramarine or cerulean blue? What would you like to see me do next? A granulation/staining side by side comparison? A demo featuring my favorite drawing techniques? Let me know in the comments below.

It took me a long time to put all of this in prospective. transparent is usually from veggie dyes, i.e. grape juice as you can see thru it but you can not easily get it off, there fore staining. opaque is like dirt (minerals, ground rocks) as in if you get dirt on your clothes, you can not see thru it, but it will scratch off or wash off, there fore not staining but one cannot see thru it therefore opaque. simple terms for complex items in our watercolor world. Hope this helps a bit. super simple stuff.

Excellent explanation!

I also LOVE Arches, great demonstration. Sennelier list all the pigments on their website and usually at the store you can pick up a chart with pigments listed. I picked one up when I was last at my art supplies store, so now I can see all their colours and the pigment numbers.

Hi! Thank you for the encouragement and information. I have a recent printed copy of the Sennelier watercolor chart which I picked up from my local art supply shop, and under Bright Red, where all the other colors list the pigment numbers (PR##) they list n.r., which according to their key means not listed. Every other color on the chart lists the pigment colors except for Bright Red. Check for yourself if you don't believe me.
@masdelacroixdefer-gitespro4179
You are absolutely right! All their others have numbers except Rouge Hélios, I think that I misunderstood when you were talking, I thought you meant that Sennelier don't put the pigment numbers... It was me misunderstanding what you had said. I'm tempted to contact them, lol! It would be easy since I live in France.

@@masdelacroixdefer-gitespro4179 No problem. It is bizarre that they don't offer information about Bright Red/Rouge Helios. I would love to know why this is the case, please keep me posted if you get an answer!

very interesting. is there a principle behind your choice of paints in this process?
@ilahjarvis
@ilahjarvis 5 лет назад
I chose a warm and cool version of each of the primary colors, plus a magenta and dark neutral. I also used a combination of student grade (Cotman) and professional (Sennelier, Qor, and Winsor & Newton) colors so you could see how both cheap and expensive paints behave on each paper. This is the basic palette that I use all the time.
