Hello. I am thinking to buy this gimball head with manfrotto mt055xpro3 for wildlife photography. I am using 600mm sigma sport lens. Do you suggest me this set?
My biggest lens I use on this is the canon 100-400 with the 2x and it works well. I have fitted a Canon 500mm on this easily. Note this thing is heavy so if you are walking this is a lot of weight to carry.
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed that you should the many directions that the head can move. It answered many of my questions. You help in my selection of gimbal heads.
The 393 is not quite as flash as the bigger models, but then for the price it is pretty good. I have had mine for a while now and it works for me. It is just a tad on the heavy side
It's weierd, I used to have the clips, but because I frequently change between bodies and lenses I just found the slides better. I have no issue with the Q2 ,but when I need to micro adjust to make sure I balance between the Q5 or the 393 the slide works better. The down side walking around in the streets with a slide is not so easy if you have straps like the Black Rapid. But you will not go wrong with this ball head.
I have one of these heads, which I use with my Nikon D7000/D200 and Sigma 50 - 500mm lens... it is a superb piece of kit... why pay three times as much for a - so called - proper gimbal head? This does everything they do and it is so well engineered and smooth in action...
Hello, great video. Could u please make a tutorial on how to attach the plate and lens to it , also how to correctly get the right panning smoothness with an allen key?
Thanks for sharing the gimbal video. If I am seeing correctly you have an extension on the viewer for your camera. If that is the case where did you get that extension?
Dear Willem, thanks for the wonderful youtube video for Manfrotto 393 Bracket. My name is Rahul Deshpande from Bangalore,India. Bird Photography is my hobby. I currently use Nikon D7100 + Nikkor 300mm f4 + Kenko 2X TC on Benro Tripod with Manfrotto 393 Bracket mounted on it. The results are good.Just few days back I started using tripod and 393 bracket. Now my problem is I mounted the 393 bracket on my Benro tripod all works well but I am unable to unmount (remove) 393 bracket from the tripod. Its tough to travel if I don't separate the bracket and tripod. So kindly let me know - How to separate the 393 bracket from Tripod ? Hope this fine. Thanks Rahul Deshpande
Hi That happened to me once. Let your tripod stand and set the legs appart a bit further than the norm. My Manfrotto typically has three lock positions. Then turn the bracket (anti clockwise) and just a bit till the knob loosen just a bit so you can turn the knob. Alternatively a vice will do :)
***** Thank you Willem ! I could remove it. Your advise worked ! you may consider updating video about 'how to remove 393 head from tripod' :) Thanks again
Thanks for sharing, watched both videos and found them a good resource. Quick question, what style photograph do you do, and have you found this to be a good tool towards that?
Thanks for the post. I will add some links to my work in the about section above. The 393 is very good for when you need to track item or need stability for night time shoots. I originally got it for birding, but it works for long exposures as well. I only use it and my Manfrotto ball head
The Manfrotto 393 certainly looks like quite a nice bit of kit. I'm sure it'd be able to handle a Sigma 600mm F8 mirror or 50-500mm telephoto zoom no problem at all. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
I made a short update video just to answer some questions on the posts There is a link in the comments Please forgive the shotty video , but I only had an iPhone to make it

thanks for the quick response ...i will need to have access to a remote shutter thing mounted to the shoe ...the wire will be plugged into the side (i have a canon 40d) ...i wonder if i can slide the camera back enough so that my wires will clear the side plugs
It can mount a body quite easily. The body just sit on the sliding plate. Keep in mind since the body will sit inside the side arms getting to some controls on the body might not be easy. In this video I did not show it but if your lens has a clamp like the Canon 70-200 shown here you can fully rotate the lens and body just by loosening the clamp
Hi They claim up to 8 hours , but 90 min at a time. I have not ran them over 60 minutes since my shoots don't last that long I did do a test once and it was on for two hours when the batteries ran flat :). I suppose you can get longer with the 3500 ma batteries
In the O configuration you seem to get a bit more vertical angle. There is no real movement change. You can drop the front of the lens from about 15deg and bring it up to about 180deg. A benefit is it has is that I made a bracket for it to fit my flash on with a beamer. I just got the bracket to screw on to the outside and not the inside There is a link in the description
This is my first Gimbal and it is real easy to handle and Pan. It is mostly resistance based so I never really touch the gimbal when I use it, I only hold the camera
Nice demonstration of of the 393 Gimbal head and good music too ;) Is the head easy to rotate despite not having a panning handle? I don't have any experience with these Gimbal heads so apologies if it seems a daft question.
up to 8 hours runtime, but 90 minutes at a time. However since I have had these I have not hit either of the time limits or even replaced the batteries. I have Enloop rechargeable batteries in and have not replaced or recharged them since I got them
very nice im planing on buying one very soon before summer for some bird watching question is whats the difference using it in "O" versus the "U" is it smoother?
Sure. Note the big nob in the center, it serves as a resistance and lock for panning. The nuts on arms also work as resistance locks as well. The center nut is actually round , but has the rubber grip over it to easily change the resistance. I prefer this head when doing nature shoots over the Ball heads, but the ball heads does make tilting easier.
It is not as smooth as your typical ball head or as the Wimberley or the Enduro gimbal since the attachment to the tripod is basically just a nut and bolt. That said it is a 1/4 of the price and for the amount of times I use it it is nothing I can really complain about. I can still track birds in flight or aircraft at air shows
Sure Can! Note the Slide lock. My 7D can sit on there with a 17-40 mm quite easily with or without the battery grip. The slide can move forward and backwards as per normal, but body sit on the slide in the U configuration and not the Closed O as shown. Whether you mount it like in the video or in the U swing mount is up to you. Have a look at the un-boxing video as well
Thank you for this video: much more helpful than the small photos on amazon or such websites. Now I know the precise content of the box and its features.
