You talking about the Tove Jansson book reminded me of a story in Emily Carroll's graphic novel horror anthology Through the Woods, which is one of the rare anthologies I liked. So, if you are interested, there is a short read for your 100 books.

Am i the only one that doesn't get stressed out by reading 10 books at a time? Im such a mood reader. If i forget a plot because its been too long i either re-read it or "receptions it." Totally agree with Raeleens pause idea!!!!

For the t-shirts in the truck: roll them up and tie them with a ribbon, but colour-code the ribbon according to size. That way the pile will still be neat even when the sizes are all mixed up, and you'll be able to find the one you need more quickly.

This is a problem I’ve never had.😂 Authors need to eat and pay their bills and we need bookstores, both used and new, to stay open, so I buy books. It also is a very simple thing that brings me a lot of joy. Exxon Mobile does more damage in a year than a publishing house would do in three. I find it interesting that people, mostly the “powers that be,” always manage to try to place environmental blame on regular, every day people, instead of on large companies that are more responsible BY FAR, than any singular person.

Hey A and R! Do I have the book recommendation for y'all!!! It's called, "The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows" by John Koenig. It is perhaps my favorite book of all time! The reason I bring it up is because of your "made up word/made up phrase" of mashed potato book. This book is a combination of made up words to describe the humanity of experiences you've felt deeply... But didn't quite have the word for it. Here is an example which reminded me of your mashed potato book shenanigans. "Proluctance: n. The paradoxical urge to avoid doing something you've been looking forward to-opening a decisive letter, meeting up with a friend who's finally back in town, reading a new book from your favorite author-perpetually waiting around for the right state of mind, stretching out the bliss of anticipation as long as you can." A more widely known word that originated from this book is Sonder. Y'all should totally check it out if you have the chance! Love the pod. Look forward to it every week. :)

My "currently reading" list is more unhinged than it's ever been. There are 18 books in there. I love Ariel's comment that it's a lake, not a hole. So I'll just continue to splash around, dip my toes in here and there. The books currently on that unhinged pile are, in order of when I started them: Let The Land Speak (Jackie French) The Diary of Virginia Woolf: Volume One 1915-1919 A Booklover’s Companion (Matthew Reisz) My Wars are Laid Away in Books - The Life of Emily Dickinson (Alfred Habegger) Reading by Moonlight: how books saved a life (Brenda Walker) The Lonely City: Adventures in the art of being alone (Olivia Laing) The Collected Poems of Sylvia Plath The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy) Under the Greenwood Tree (Thomas Hardy) Home at Grasmere: Extracts from Dorothy Wordsworth’s journal & William Wordsworth’s poems Some of Us Just Fall (Polly Atkin) Night Side of the River (Jeanette Winterson) Words are Eagles (Gregory Day) The Bell of the World (Gregory Day) The Old Ways (Robert Macfarlane) The Year of the Hare (Arto Paasilinna) Wild Geese (Nan Shepherd) Foster (Claire Keegan)

Hi Ariel, hi Rayleen ! I wanted to add my two cents to the conversation about used books ! I'm a published french author, it is my full time job to write books. It is good to know that we, as author, perceive no copyright on used books copy of our own books. Exactly like we buy some cups from small pottery business to support them, even if those are new item that are brought into the world, people should know that they are supporting the authors when buying books new. They are as well supporting a long term publishing policy ; because our industry is suffering of surproduction, books in bookstore have a life of two to three weeks, before being replaced by a new release. If people are still buying a new copy of a book published like three month ago, or a year, publisher will consider it a long selling book. If it's becoming a tendency, they will published less books, and they will promote better the few they have chosen carefully, which, for us, writer, will mean having more decent working condition and for you, readers, more delicately crafted stories. I feel like there could be a balance between ethical reason and ecological logic ; buy new if you have the budget, if you know this books will stay with you a long time, or maybe a lifetime, buy new if the edition is pretty or if the author seems young, or at their career debut ! Buy used copy , or better, go to the library, if you're unsure about the future of the book or if you don't have the money to support the writer ! And, good to know : here, in France, when you borrow a book from a library, we perceive a copyright, so it it supporting us, in a very ethical, minimalist and ecofriendly way ! Plus, library are always such beautiful places <3 Have a nice day everyone !

Mais ça va changer en France, non ? Il me semblait que c'était pour ça que le gouvernement voulait aligner le prix des livres de seconde main sur la loi Lang, pour que les auteurs finissent par pouvoir toucher des royalties.

My mom used to do the time capsule thing with Christmas books when I was younger! She wrapped a bankers box in wrapping paper and stored all the Christmas picture books in there, so at the start of December, my sister and I got to open up the box of books and have all "new" ones for the holiday season. It was so much fun! I hope you get the same enjoyment from your time capsule, Raeleen!

Something that helps me distinguish my academic reading from my hobby reading is to use a different format. I often will read physical copies of my school books since I have to study/annotate them, but I will listen to my fun books on audio. This is also a great way to habit stack cuz you can break up your studies with a little walk or house chores and get to listen to a more fun story! (But, as the wise Ariel said, there is no shame in giving up! Sometimes it’s healthier to use your precious little free time for a different form of rest.)

Hello! I loved this episode, and I particularly loved all the super thoughtful responses to Amy J's eco-anxiety bookish dilemma. I was thinking about what Amy J said about a collection of books (even second-hand books!) giving them crippling anxiety - and I wondered if there could be a way for Amy J to honour and celebrate their favourite stories or love of reading in the home, in a way that avoided physical books entirely (since they appear to be such an emotional trigger/ Amy so strongly associates them with the climate crisis and mass production). One way could be to commission an artist to illustrate the spines or covers of their absolute favourites, and display the art somewhere in the home - or if that's a little costly (fair!) another could be to print out or hand write favourite bookish quotes or passages and display them in frames around the house. Just a thought! Stay gold, Amy J.

Do you have a guest book for the truck for people to leave their names and notes in? A local to me permanent jeweler has one at her shop for customers to sign. I know it's more of an AirBnB type thing, but it might be a fun thing and it would help you to remember names! :)

Something my brother does with his ereader is getting library books on loan, then putting the ereader on airplane mode and turning off wifi. Apparently as long as it isn't connecting to wifi or internet, he can keep the book well past the library deadline.

Hah! I do that too. I literally line up the next 10-15 books I want to check out, mass check them all out, download them on my eReader, put it in airplane mode, return the books the same day from my phone to the library so they're not being held up for anyone to check them out, and then just coast on airplane mode for 4-6 weeks at a time until I'm ready for my next "batch". It's a beautiful system.

I totally related with the 10 or so books I tend to just put a little tab in them as a bookmark and put them in a come back to you area on my shelf and like you say I when I look at that shelf and enough time has past if I'm not picking it up because I know I wasn't enjoying it enough then move it on. Some books I do want to finish but like it can be overwhelming so I aim to finish say two or three of the outstanding books and just focus on those and if I gravitate to one more then just continue with that. It's giving yourself the freedom and not having too many hard rules just use it as a time to play around and enjoy your books without pressure. And Ariel I recently looked over my Goodreads shelf it's been a while, I made a new shelf called 'Finish Someday' haha where I've moved all of the outstanding books from currently reading. I've just got two current reads and an outstanding one in there now and it's so much easier to look at. Also has Raeleen ever played Cult of the Lamb? I think she'd love it!!! 😊

For the non book owning book lover, what if you went in Canva and designed a few pieces of art that were rectangle colors like book spines and put some of your favorite books and authors on the spines? Since you aren't reading the books and just want a joyful reminder of books you love around your home. Simple cheap art you cant print for less than $1 each mightbe fun.

In Wales you can get information on water levels and quality from Natural Resources Wales. Canada could well have an equivalent body and they may have done some monitoring on that river that's publicly available. Also big congratulations Ariel on being quoted I the Guardian books newsletter. It was exciting to read in unexpected context.

I feel like Mosscap (A Psalm for the Wild-built) is even more appropriate as a name now for the truck now because of the struggles with the pesky distributor cap. That mossy old cap. (Yes I'm the person who originally suggested the name lol). 💚💚💚 Just like Mosscap the robot, the truck deserves love and to be fixed.

Hi Ariel and Rayleen! Fun story for you guys: I bought A Tree Grows in Brooklyn at the recommendation of this podcast and the version I found is from 1943 and has a label on the front that says “Due to the critical paper shortage, this reduced size must be adopted to keep this popular bestseller available to the public.” Then in bold: “every word of the original book is contained in this edition.” On the back is a big ad for buying war bonds. So excited to read this tattered gem from the thrift store! I’m also currently reading The Blue Castle and am eating it up. Love this podcast and the amazing recs. Our tastes definitely align.

i really liked all of kayleys recs! (oh no, my tbr is gonna get bigger once again), when describing her favourites and the kind of books she tends to read, it really reminded me of one of my all time favourites: "this is how you lose the time war", bcs it is queer, also very whimsical (starless sea is definitely my top book ever! and has some same themes and vibes in it), and it has a garden in it. its very probable that kayley has read it already, it was also pretty big everywhere, but i just wanted to mention it, in case theres someone with similar taste.
