Excellent! You got a good ear for the elite K5's, there aren't many left nowadays. You really went all out for it! Great chase up San Timoteo! Always wanted to chase The Sunset from Temple City to Ontario, but thought it was too difficult due to the freeway being kinda out of the way at both places. How easy was it? Did you have a lot of time to spare?
It is definitely worth the effort to see the ones we got left. I felt that chasing from Temple City to Ontario would maybe be possible since it's 10:30 at night. That segment of the chase was very close, when I arrived at the crossing Train 2 was sitting at the station. They were doing construction on the 10 near there so maybe once that clears up it may be a bit better. I also brought a friend so we were able to benefit from the carpool lane. Either way, the Ontario stop seems to be a longer one so I had maybe 5 minutes to comfortably get ready for their departure. Ontario to San Timoteo was a lot better, I was waiting at the crossing for a bit.
2:44 2302 before being given the pointless wrap that they've kept on it well past its expiration. Its K5LA sounds just as decent then as it does now. Funny enough, the other one that got the wrap, 2301, is mid-set right behind it there. If 8:23 were to be replicated now, you'd have gotten Double Heritage Units, considering we all know what's happened with that trailing P42 ever since then. 18:22 Seems like you got so much of 869 back when it was around. At this point, if you were a Horn Collector, they might as well just sell you its K5LA considering it'll likely never run again.
I was lucky enough to see 869 using K5LA around 17 times back in 2019, the P2 was working terribly at the time. It would be a dream to have that K5LA in my collection. Do you collect horns?
I wish I could collect horns, but the horns of my interest are very specific ones from certain units that as far as I know, would take a lot more than just money to get my hands on. I'd also need to get some Bells too to go with them.
Yea that is something I have come to learn, you need some real good connections to find specific horns. Even then you have to pay quite a bit to play, horn prices seem to keep going up.
Nice shots from Tehachapi, epic meet and race at Santa Fe Springs, rare catch on the point of Amtrak # 763 (my favorite passenger loco) , really liked the shot on the curve at Camarillo, nice work Derek excellent video ! Thanks for posting ; - Larry
Awesome video Derek, shave and a hair cut, great meets, that long Coast Starlight (I think that's what it was ?) with the 4 Genesis locos and private cars on the tail end; you were fortunate to catch some great shots at nice locations ! Excellent video my friend ; - Larry
That train with the 4 P42 Genesis locomotives was from June 2021, it was 2 combined inbound Southwest Chief sets. I forget exactly why but the one Southwest Chief was delayed enough the next day's Southwest Chief caught up to it and they put them together for the remainder of the trip.
