Mr Smith was one of my science teachers at MCHS. He was the only teacher who ever gave me an A. But not for my classwork which was very average but by showing interest in class. One of the nicest teachers.
I named my robot Gizmo. I built him with Powerwheels motors and gearboxes in his based. Two windsheild wiper motors raise and lower his arms. Two little motors and gearboxes with pullies in his shoulders open and close his claws. His legs and body and head are plastic trash cans. He is controlled by and old cassette tape storage box with 6 double pole/ double throw switches mounted inside. He looks like a big toy.
There's a photo of the robot, and Sherwood Fuehrer, in my 1960 edition of the World Book. I was two when my family bought the encyclopedia, so I grew up with it. I remember, back then the "gismo" spelling seemed completely standard; but today Google thinks it should be "gizmo", and now that spelling seems more correct to me.
It’s a pity that the original was altered: the chassis was shortened .. it would be better to leave the original of 1951 in its original form - as a unique historical robot, but they would make the second one according to the same scheme, more modern and working.
the mechanism works well, remotely controlled, it's a shame he couldn't be programmed but at the time a computer was as at least as large as the room where Robert was being worked i would guess?
We have a lot of catching up to do to be able to build cheap and effective machines as insects do by the millions at a time. I dont know if we have robots as sophisticated as a common ant Yet?
"half of the landmass on the planet is impassable by conventional wheeled or tracked vehicles"... proceeds to show the robot walking on flat land.... 😂😂😂
