Actually no, the FT-60 uses a 3rd contact at the bottom corner of the battery pack for charging. This is how it can charge the rechargeable but not alkaline batteries. It's also possible to modify normal AA NiMH batteries in the AA tray by cutting the "wrapper" off the last battery and then it will charge from the side jack (if your FT-60 supports it, newer models only charge from the drop-in base).
I took a different route. I bought two 3.7v Li-ion Lithium Rechargeable AA Batteries. Actually got 4 plus the 2 battery charger. These batteries are rated at 2000 mAh each. In series you get 7.4v at 2000 mAh. Better than the stock NiCad pack at 7.2v at 1500 mAh. Since I only need two batteries in the AA aux battery holder, I put in 4 dummy batteries (Amazon 4-Pack AA Battery Placeholder Cylinder AA Size Hot Dummy Fake Battery Setup Shell). I didn't want to rewire the AA aux pack. The 14500 Battery (AA size) are available from Amazon.
I put a lithium phone battery inside a beofeng uv3rx battery case old battery popped open was f!@#$ed works a treat now all sealed in with black potting epoxy lasts hours only 3.7 volts tho now instead of 4.2
The project is pretty old, I offer no support for it so you have to figure on your own what is there, what is working and what's not. Good luck! catalinsimion.blogspot.ro/2012/03/microcontrolerul-pic18f4550-microchip_17.html
Thanks i made it also, but i also charge the battery in the radio, not outside ! I have only one problem, i remove the both diodes from the battery and i dont use them, perhaps this is the reason if i left the radio off for some days battery discharges ! I think is missing the diodes. For charging directly in the radio i use a 9volts charger connected to the radio. Regards
Ingenious very crafty.. I was thinking of doing the same with the 18650 led flashlight batts that i have but i was going to use 4 of them 2x in series and then parallel them .. In a project box with a power plug .. Your idea is better! Thanks 73
Nice, but I would use some epoxy rather than hot melt. Hot melt does just that on a hot day. I cut my own car screen sunshade one day, sealed the edge all the way around with hot melt glue. Before installing it as planned, I put it in the car on some newspaper on a hot day for a few hours. When I came back, lots of the glue had melted off onto the newspaper.
Leo Módulos I copied/pasted it, but perhaps were some formatting issues. I am too lazy to modify (alter) the code for my blog (and to make it unusable) :)

YO2LYP May be they trying to use a different version of Mikroc.
You have to cut in the battery case FNB-83 these 2 rectangular slots in order to accommodate the 18650 Lithium batteries. The battery case has some spring contacts, remove them from the battery case, but keep them for later use. Solder the spring contacts to the battery case contacts, make sure that the contacts are providing correct voltage polarity (+ and -) and a good electrical contact to the 18650 batteries. Use hot melt to keep the spring contacts in place, I had some white hot melt, make sure that it is not spread over the contacts. That is in short, here are more explanations (use Google Translate, Romanian to English): catalinsimion.blogspot.ro/2014/02/yaesu-ft-60-cu-litiu-ion.html. 73! :)
