I am a GoPro HERO3+ Silver camera attached to a runner by a headstrap. This channel is dedicated to time-lapse videos of his running, featuring sightseeing or road races around the world with terrible bitrate.
Do check out his other RU-vid channel, featuring completely unrelated content: www.youtube.com/@KeyboardVGM
Oh hey, sorry it took me so long to reply. I produced the speed/mileage overlay myself for the video. First I selected a few key points along the course and measured their elevation and the distance between them very carefully using Google Earth. I also noted down my running time at each of those points (which I knew because I had the footage of the whole race). Then I coded a little something to calculate everything I needed based on that data and produce the graphics for the video. For future videos, I still need to figure out how to make the overlay appear sharper on RU-vid. It gets blurred because of the bitrate cap.
Omg this is awesome! Thank you for sharing your Boston Marathon with us! Loved it…. Sorry about you knee… but you still did awesome in my eyes! I’m running Boston in two weeks…. Boston2024 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🏃♀️
I just discovered your channel and I love it. Given your experience and expertise, could you help me with some advice on how to record longer races( 10h+ ultras)? Should I just carry 10 batteries and change them on the go?
Thanks! As for your question, I really don't know how good or bad camera batteries are these days. Whenever I record a new running video, I still use the same old GoPro and batteries that I bought 10 years ago. They last about 1h45 under ideal temperature conditions. If you wanted to record 10+ hours with those, you'd need 6--8 fresh batteries. Or maybe just 2 and you charge them on the go with a power bank, but I don't know how that would affect their lifetime. Another problem would be the camera overheating, and you'd also need several memory cards to swap in and out depending on the video quality.
This video had gotten me through 3.5 months of training. I had the music playing at the start of every long and short run. I visualized making a right on Hereford and left on Boylston. I can't believe all this hard work will pay off in 2 weeks. Thank you for uploading this. It's helped me stay connected to my deeper why. #BostonStrong
Great video, great annotation, and great spirit! Thanks for sharing! And you're right about 2018 ... it was miserable, but that also made it memorable.
Thanks! I have another video of this same race that is a time-lapse instead of normal footage, and it has the splits in the end. This one I just wanted to be a running video mostly empty of any stats.
Erik. Fabulous video. Heroic effort in the circumstances. I'm a Boston newbie. This video really gave me a good sense as to what to expect when I run in 4 weeks time.. Yikes...
Thank you for posting this! I will be virtually running the Boston marathon on my treadmill alone tomarrow and this made me feel not so alone. I loved being able to see the race!
That's pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to running it virtually on the course this year, then volunteering for medical on the actual race day. Thanks for the preview of what I'll be doing (much slower than you).
Thank you for completing. I'm battling some minor knee pain going into next week's marathon for my first Boston and I wanted to see the course. My qualifying time was 2:59:21 so I was anxious watching and so glad to see you persevere to finish. Great job and thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks! Time and mileage were added with a program that I wrote for myself. I manually noted down the time and mileage at a few key points along the course and fed this data into the program. Then it produced the graphics as you see them. But there are also programs that can do this using the data from your GPS watch, for example Garmin VIRB.
Wow even after you speed it up and part of the race was cutout due to battery issues the video is still longer than I can run... well when I say run I mean 20min 5k pace run but still this is crazy
This feels like watching an 8-bit or a 16-bit NES or Arcade game that features you as the runner. I would have definitely played it. Think Atari, or even Sega Genesis. Love the video, the effort, and the music. As a 3:24 marathoner from Cbus, my goal is to BQ someday.
My dad used to work in Boston and his condo he stayed at was on the route. At mile 22.83 in the video, the large condo on the right is where my dad used to live. I would watch it all the time when I would visit him
Great video! You started out at some pace, even the half marathon time was impressive! Gutted for you at the same time nothing worse than race day and an injury.. well done 👍
