I have to say, I never really understood where the idea came from that RTS cannot be a mainstream genre, while RTS games were are the top of the sales charts in the late 90's and early 00's. I think the relatively lacking sales performance of RTS games over the past decade is not because the audience is no longer there, but rather that the games themselves were lacking. Studios kept making their games more and more sweaty and competitive, chasing that imaginary e-sports crowd, while research has proven time and again that RTS gamers overwhelmingly prefer singleplayer skirmish and campaign. Studios have been stripping RTS games of many features that made them unique and awesome, in favour of watered down MOBA mechanics. In addition to that, most of these games were made on a shoestring budget and thus were never really able to compete with the production values of the AAA RTS games of yesteryear. Having said that, I have a lot of confidence in this new wave of RTS games. I feel that more and more developers are realizing what made RTS awesome and focus on that, instead of chasing the lastest gaming trends. The points touched upon by the panelists in this video confirms that.

I completely agree on CK3, unless one really enforces self.imposed_rules, the game is boring. Just breed great characters with lots of congenital skills, then just hire the best characters for the positions you want, keep some money to hire mercenaries to crush any rebellion because AI doesn't account for that possibility, conquer conquer conquer... That's why I made a mod that would hide almost all congenital traits from the player, plus certain congenitals I made them much more common, and much weaker, attraction traits for example are just ridiculously overpowered.
Amazing to get a peak inside the discussions that create these games! Really like the discussion about whether (or more, how much) the AI should be asymmetrical. I think this is why I haven't liked recent civ games and one of the reasons I like Old World. Civs I to IV to me felt like playing inside a simulation. V and especially VI feel like you're playing an overly complex board game. To me the AI being deliberately asymmetrical and a part of the simulated world is far more immersive than when they act like another human playing the game. I play for the simulation of growing a civilization, not for a simulation of playing human opponents.
You can make a game about micro management of a hippie comunitie building self sufficient comunities organizing demonstration and micro games inside it about playing guitar hehe, also theme park or theme hospital,sims, sim citie and i recall a game called after life about building efficient heavens or ineficient hells thos games are statregy games also civilization has war but its not about it
Heaven & Hell I think is what you are talking about. Hell lets you start Armageddon certainly not peaceful! haha... No but yes there are a ton of peaceful games, but the heaver turn based or 4x or deep strategy are all about conflict. I have a massive game idea about brokering peace between waring nations. ANY WAY POSSIBLE....
