Apparently Michael Keaton and Christian Bale have been spotted in this wee place. With Michael Caine donning his Butler's uniform as Alfred. Rumour has it that there's a big underground cave that stores some strange looking automobiles as well as some highly unusual clothing.😜 I JEST, OF COURSE - just a wee bit of fun. Although I dare say the residents of the wee village are probably sick and tired of such humour.😳

Yes! If you wander around the Meadows in February/March, you can see some that we planted along Meadows Way (particularly around the story pole and by the trees between Meadows Way and Waterway Street). The following year we also planted some by the Bridgeway Centre sign. I had intended to get some more planted but unfortunately other things in my life have got in the way of me organising that. Someone else also independently organised crocus planting in Queen's Walk Recreation Ground (I have no idea if the person who organised that had seen this video). Thankyou for commenting, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!

Nottingham definitely needs more green space, not repeat development, so I hope that's what happens here. Restoring the river Leen would do the trick. You need water in the centre of cities. Look at Bristol which is about the same size as Nottingham..

I knew about this, but there is a comment below about Hyson Green being Hyacinth Green. Now that I had not heard before. But is it true?
@Nottsflix
@Nottsflix 3 месяца назад
Had a look into this today and from a quick search found this on Hyson Green from 'Old Nottingham Suburbs: Then & Now' (1914) by Robert Mellors: 'A hundred years ago it was called "High Sands" (Captain Barker's "Walks round Nottingham," page 241), to distinguish it from the low sands of Radford... There has been much controversy as to the village name, but it appears probable that it was spelt "Ison." It is said that John Ison had gardens and built two houses, and painted on them "Ison Green."... In any case, "Hyson" was very soon preferred, and it differed little in sound from High Sands, and "Ison" as the name of the street was changed.' He's relying on hearsay ("it is said"), and also acknowledges controversy, so this theory is also worth taking with a pinch of salt!
@davidberesford7009

Queens Walk rec. has a few, it's a turning point of the year when they appear! Well done for pointing out we have a long history of population growth, meaning more housing is needed, but whether putting it on a fliidplain is a good idea,, I'm not convinced! Facts.

In defence of Broadmarsh it had some quite useful budget price shops that normally would never get anywhere near the city centre and in its heyday was a popular, buzzy commercial success, while other cities nearby had not the same retail and leisure minded development, Nottingham attracted shoppers from outside the county. You could park practically inside it even on a Saturday as car park was huge, its numerous bus stops were crowded and could get you anywhere cheaply via constant parade of busses, It was and built so traveling into the city from the Station meant you had to walk through its impressive atrium and past it busiest stores. For shoppers it meant that even on rainy winter days you could be comfortable and dry. It was around for 50ish years, and I guess it did its job for the City at that time. The vandalism done to Dury hill was unforgivable though, and its time is well and truly over as shopping has moved on, specifically, To the huge Giltbrook and Netherfield retail parks, which are always busy. at least for those wedded to the Car (let's face it. its easier particularly with Kids and stuff to cary ) I think the once planned inTuTu redevelopment was a lucky escape for the City as it would not have fared any better, if the price of something more sympathetic and realistic for land use, is a decade of dereliction then that is OK in the long term.

Bread & Lard Islander by birth, currently 15miles down the road in Lufbra. When at school in W.B. in the late 60s I went, as part of a school project, to do some work on the caves before Broad Marsh was built. It was interesting and enjoyable. (B&LI = West Bridgford)

Broadmarsh used to be a lovely little shopping centre, under cover bus station, lockers to store luggage if you were catching the national express bus later, Wilkos, wimpy, lovely model kit shop, few decent Poundland type shops, and lots of other shops, then signs went up about redevelopment with pretty images , then all the shops closed down, demolition started, Covid hit, and I believe the owners went bankrupt, … must admit, not been to Nottingham since late 2019

My mother took me to Gem in the 1960,s when it first opened. I remember she thought it was unsafe because it had no windows, she was scared there might be a fire and people would be trapped. Then one day there was an IRA bomb scare whilst we were in there, and everyone had to file out calmly. That was the last time we went, my mother went back to shopping on Melton Road, at the Corner Shop and Slades the greengrocer, after that.

I have lived in Nottingham all my life and the broadmarsh shopping centre was always classed as the dirty little outcast it was a filthy place that always held the "lower quality" branded stores. The trouble with the place was the way it was a kind of gate keeper to all of Nottingham city centre for people coming from the South. Many people just used it as a thoroughfare to get to the good part of the city. It didn't help with being so close to that dirty diesel filled bus station which gave it a distinctive smell all the time. It suffered massively from a lack of investment it was pretty much doomed from the early 2000's. I don't like what it looks like now but I am glad it has been pulled down.

Great points, though if you seriously think in-person retail is dead, then go to Meadowhall - like going back a few years but in a good way. Nottingham's public transport has been going downhill very recently, and has turned away drivers who used to come in from nearby rural towns until parking went up to £5 an hour. We need a park but also a smaller leisure centre in the Broadmarsh area to get the best of both worlds

I was store manager of Freeman Hardy Willis in the Broadmarsh centre 1975 / 1976 and it was the most exciting retail venue I have ever managed. The centre promotions brought customers in by the droves which enabled me to double my targets week in and week out. So much so It was enough to catapult my career to some of the largest stores in the country such as Birmingham and Newcastle. Lunch in the Wimpy, fantastic staff and bulging tills, they were some of the happiest days of my career.
