Having a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can be frightening, and finding reliable and accurate information about HCM can be challenging. Our goal is to provide HCM patients, and their families, relevant information to help them understand their condition, including insights on diagnosis, treatment, and genetics. With this knowledge, we hope that they will live with less uncertainty, be better prepared to talk about HCM with their healthcare provider and their family and be active participants in managing this treatable, livable heart condition.
Education, videos, and resources are available at www.hcmcare.com. The HCM Care App is also available for download from the iTunes and Google Play stores.
@@lupusgirl1000 I have “unnormal normal” HCM - that is, I’m not in the width range for being diagnosed, and it’s 1-2 mm larger than normal untrained people. My oxygen is 97-100, resting pulse at 46 bpm. But the cardiologist didn’t say it was athletes heart
I believe my husband just died of this at 41. We were never worned of SD. ICD was mentioned as a possiblity of being implanted but never told it was necessary. I wish we had pursued getting an icd for him maybe he would have made it.
Best ever video for the explanation ❤ I have this condition (HOCM) It was was found in ECO But when I done my Cradiac (MRI) it’s shows everything Normal.
it is a great video. Thanks a lot. Is elevated t'riponin in HCM patient consider a risk factor? I am an HCM patient with the apical segments meaasuring up to 1.8 cm. After taking beta-block medicine since about 15 years ago, I have not had a sympton; Recently, my triponin number elevated to 164 ng/L. Do I need to implant an ICD?
It is a very good video. Thanks a lot. I am a HCM patient. I have been taking beta-block medicine for over 15 years. Recently I am diagnosied with elevalted triponin, and MRI result shows scars in my heart wall. I am recommened to install ICD recently by my doctor. I do not have any symptons with the beta-block medicine. I do not know if I am going to install ICD or not. It is very hard for me to make a decition.

The Cardiologist at DUKE Medical Center at least the 3 I've have dealt with are the WORST medical "professionals" possible . In the late 90's I had a terrible experience at the Durham cardiology location and more recently The Cardiology program at the Raleigh location which are conjoined at the hip. Dr. James Patterson DUMC followed my lack progress over the last several years with a reckless disregard for my stated symptoms. He monitored my long standing CHF while my ejection dropped from >55% to 45% then the next year and to 30% this year and his comment (QUOTE) "you've had a SLIGHT drop in you ejection fraction". I had already decided that Duke Med was not a program that was willing to assist me to improve my heart health and had made the decision to fire Peterson but I would complete an Echo that was finally scheduled. During the process to finding an alternate Heart Center (ECU) for heart care my ejection tested at 23% currently and I hopefully have located a doctor that listens and actually is trying to locate the causation of my issues and seems interested in therapies that at the least will improve my quality of life. The only way I would return to DUKE Heart Center would be for assisted suicide, that's how little I believe that DUKE Heart is interested in improving my heart health. The above only applies to the Heart Center as I have had world class medical care in other programs at Duke without exception.
Thank you, I really needed to see this video, although I trust my doctor and recently had a second opinion per the cardiologist, this video was much easier to understand, the graphic and pictures. All Cardiologist needs a video to share such as this, My Cardiologist tried to show me about my HCM by drawing a picture, sorry the drawing provided no education or visual that I could understand, especially being diagnosed with HCM in the past three years. Thank you, greatly appreciated.
Hi. I think this is a great video. I work in a pharmaceutical laboratory in Argentina. We would like to use your video for educational purposes but we need to translate the audio to spanish so, we want to ask for permission to use this way altered video in this context.
My son has Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy. He is 12 and I love him so much. Sometimes I'm sad and fearful and sometimes I'm good in spirit and with faith in God. I wish long life for you my son and may God always bless you. To all with this condition I wish for God to do miracles and always bless you! Amen
i have hcm and decided against an icd. the anxiety of inappropriate shocks was one of the deciding factors. also if i change my mind in the future it is difficult to remove.
This was very educational. Good information. I have Hypertrophic Cardiomathy so threrfore I have an ICD. I'm scared if It will give me a shock when it don't need to...
hello my father recently died at 63 back in april he was just 2 months out from having covid expericing long term covid fatigue and headaches that wouldnt go away. my father was in remission for over a year from stage 3 prostate cancer had radiation therapy for it. the autopsy dr said his heart was doubled in size, at some point in time he had a silent heart attack in the last few months and that his chambers were firing on all cylinders wrong that he was ready to drop dead at any time. the cause of death states hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy would you consider this due to covid?
Prayers to your father... So yes Covid can attack the hearth but the vaccine is also a factor. Did your father got the jab if yes how many. Did you check a autopsy for spike protein
@@jay-wl2di no vaccine for him and I spoke to the autopsy doctor she said his lungs were filled with fluid that’s a telltail Covid sign but she “couldn’t” say that was the cause of death because she’s in Florida lol
I just heard a Dr. on this channel saying there are no clinical trials for HCM medicines right now. So beta blockers and those implants and then a. Heart transplant. After a heart transplant a person is on so many anti rejection drugs you have alot of health issues.
@@wendi2819 A drug has been approved in 2022 that reduces the thickened wall. It has to be taken the rest of your life though. Camzyos is the name of it. And the treatments for HCM aren't limited to beta blockers and implants. Septal myectomy and alchohol ablation can be performed.
Hi doctor, my greetings to you. I have hypertrophic cardiopmypathy May it be connected with my previous professional sport activity in boxing? As far, as I remember, when I was a member of United team I was diagnosed with "sinusioidal change in my heart. I got 63 today and I don't feel any disturbing feature. I can run or walk long distance. Though it was twice in my life, when I was young. My heart got squeezed much and I couldn't breathe in. I was in agony suffocatin. I tried 2 or even 3 times to breathe fully, but failed. Thus I had no other option, as to calm down and to wait, these moments lasted like whole eternity for me, though splits of seconds passed gradually I managed breathing in fully and that uncomfortable feeling disappeared. Shall I continue my sport activity exerecises? Thank you for interesting information.
Most doctors over look people who have chronic pain and migraines in young people ( if the physician checks blood pressure) at doctor visit. My sister n law had no family history of sudden death age 40 died in sleep. Recently, I found out I have enlarged heart because my doctors blew my blood pressure off as pain elevated my bp or told me that the day before my bp was 220/150 but 146/132 was okay or I was just a complainer. Suddenly, chest pain increased and suddenly swelling in legs for unknown reasons finding my migraine attacks weren’t stemming from neck as my physicians claimed nor was I complainer from 2 CT with contrast and 2 Sonogram and X Rays at 2 hospitals less than 72 hours both confirmed what I diagnosed to myself and stated to the physician on multiple occasions “ Pulmonary Hypertension” I was blown off by 47 doctors later “ that my hypertension was neglected that it enlarged my heart, LVH - left ventricle hypotrophic, lungs, and a rare lung disease LAM and Ischemia disease and a few spots of bleeding on brain. So Hypertension doesn’t discriminate and American needs better health care and if your doctor doesn’t listen to you unfortunately, I did try to find one physician to listen to me but it was too late. The physicians need need learn from my statement and quit being so damn arrogant and start listening to their patients a lot more because you went medical school you still need to constantly learn as each human is different and after all it is called practicing medicine. That’s why I used to practice swimming to hone my skills. Now I’m afraid to go to sleep. I’m an attractive woman ready to conquer the world but in one day my life changed from recovering from broken neck and feet and shoulder injuries to now hey you can die like a drop of a hat.

Are you a NP, PA, MD, or DO reading this comment? I have HCM with LV obstruction. I hear about sudden cardiac arrest all the time, the statistic is 26 American athletes per year will drop dead. I can find no information about resuscitation in SCA for those with my condition. Any cardiac medical providers willing to tell me if resuscitation is possible with sudden cardiac arrest?
