The top of my trusty workmate isn’t broken but you may have inspired me to fix it anyways. I’ve always thought it was too low and adding the tool storage and increasing the top size would be super useful!
I like this. Lots of potential. Scrap of plywood across the orange braces to add a bag of something on top to increase stability. Bag of dirt, gravel what have you? Tip the bag out when you’re done, repeat as needed. Clamp a long table on top with a centre support between the clamps to steady, or make a second one and clamp between as a patio table suitable for large gatherings. Possibilities are endless. I was going to mod my mid 70’s Workmate with wheels but raising the jaws your way is a very appealing option. Thanks for the idea.
hey Magnus.. How do u keep that longer front Jaw aligned all the time?? I have seen that type of Vise on a few workbenches now. What is the name of it? It looks very sturdy man.. t's a shame u lost that footage of the vide being built into it and the front jaw bcos that has me stumped a little. How do u get it to sit so well without any real play/movement? I out a smaller vise by Magnusson on my workbench the othe day and it is ok but very small.
I have a normal Dell PC.I bought it 2nd hand for a CNC build but haven't got round to build the CNC yet. I want to start a channel for making stuff on thee. I have a small workshop. I'm about to embark on building my own table saw and was wondering if editing is a real essential for YT? Would it not be ok to just make a video and slit it up into sections using the windows program on my computer?? I'm not tech savvy but some things I'm ok with. I'm really interested in editing videos or I should say learning how to. Is it a steep learning curve Magnus?
I love these Magnus .. I was thinking of making a different type pf one for the tea lights but this has given me a good idea too now. tHANKS. i JUST FOUND UR CHANNEL. i WATCHED THE WORKBENCH BUILD WITH THE FOLDING MFT top. Brilliant as well mate..
This is a good version. There are a lot of videos out there that seem REALLY more complicated than they seem to need to be. Is there a way to set this up, using a smaller hole saw bit and create 4 point or 5 point knobs?
The new top is 10 cm high and the top surface is 80 cm above the floor. Just check that your drill will fit in between if you want that function. Good luck with the build!
Hi David, thanks for your comment! I havn't come to uploading this to my website yet... here's a link to an image with measurements, I hope this will help you. Happy New Year! www.madebymagnus.com/dwg/star_knob_jig_iso.jpg
My workmate is by far my most useful extra set of hands, ever! As I have a small garage and an MFT style work surface is a must - I’m definitely going to use your “hack” awesome!!
Hello, i am just about to embark on a similar project. I have yet to lay out concrete, is there a reason why the 4x4 post was not put into the wet concrete? I am a novice at construction type projects. I just dont have the tools to drill into masonary and am hiring help to lay out concrete, while i plan to do the fence on my own.
Hi, it was probably not clear in the video but I put the brackets into the wet concrete. So no drilling was required. I think the posts will last longer this way, compared to be embedded in concrete. Also it will be easyer to change the posts if they wera out.
You've inspired me. I was planning on building a compact table saw / miter saw station. I was trying to figure out how to easily switch dust collection between the two. I'll try altering your plans and build a "twin" gate to flip between each dust port.
Looks like a Harbor Freight Clamping Workbench... I recently bought one to keep in my detached garage for quick jobs, even though I have an actual Black & Decker 79-041 Workmate that I keep in my basement workshop... I just don't like carrying up the steps and 200 feet to my other garage for quick jobs. Really like your custom top... the weakest point of that HF clamping workbench is the front metal plate behind the adjustment handles... after a couple of uses, I noticed the left handle was rubbing on the wood top... the thin metal front plate became distorted inward causing the handle to be drawn inward. I'm going to remove the handles as soon as I get a proper roll pin punch, and insert a wide metal washer over the screw bar to stiffen the front plates. On a side note, I just bought a nice older (1977) B&D 79-001 Type 2 workmate from Craig's List for $20... looking forward to doing some modifications to it... much better built than the HF "workmate".
I have 2 of those a small on that was my dad's and a big one I bought as a teenager. Looks like I need to do something similar. Great Job, thanks for the ideas !
