Sailing has been a great adventure and has opened us up to a wonderful way to explore this beautiful world and introduced us to an amazing community! Thanks for watching
I really enjoy watching your videos we have the identical boat so it's interesting to see what you decide to do and when you decide to do it as compared to me I like ponderay really well living down in Boise is quite a run up there but I make it 😢up to Donnely and Bear lake occasionally Anderson ranch. and bear reservoir gardens
Thanks for watching the videos! It is cool to see that there are quite a few people with these 16’ boats and they are enjoying them as much as I am. Mine was in pretty rough shape but it has been fun restoring her. Fair winds on those beautiful lakes in central and southern Idaho!!
Love your channel! I recently bought a 1972 Newport 16 and was wondering if you could advise me on a good book for setting up the sailboat, mast, boom etc. I have no sailing experience but if I could learn where the cables and lines attach that would give me a start. Thanks in advance!
Thank you and congratulations on the Newport 16. They are very fun boats and great to learn on. I would recommend the American sailing association’s ( sailing made easy) book as it is a good instructional manual for basic keelboat sailing! If you have questions on how to rig your boat you can reach me at Ruddyducksailing@gmail.com
Thanks very much for sharing this beautiful location. I was looking for some places to broaden/improve my trailer sailing and camping aboard experiences, and this isn’t so far from Saskatchewan, where I’m based. Perhaps next year… 😊
Thanks for watching. There are definitely some beautiful lakes here and even more so further north in British Columbia. I love having towering mountains around but there’s also beauty and so much opportunity where you are based. Looking at a map of Saskatchewan is amazing with all the lakes seemingly everywhere!! Have fun in your travels😊
@@ruddyducksailing Thank you. There are meant to be something like 10,000 lakes here. If only more of them had an easy way to launch our sailboats ! Fair winds.
@@ruddyducksailing Seems like you're doing a good job at that already, so it'll be interesting to watch as you improve. Keep up the quality adventuring!
They are not too hard to find. Finding one in great shape with a nice trailer is harder. I tend to go for the cheaper project boats but there are a lot of nice p-15s for around $4500 on Craigslist or facebook marketplace
Great bit of filming , can't wait too get my boat out again this summer for a fee trips like that. Love how you setup the jib tack... was saying the same thing a bout leach line just as you said it lol, have you thought about a kicker for the main or are the booms on those boats a bit thin on it to take the load , would help with mast bend and sail shape up wind. Lovely wee boat perfect for small weekend trips.
Thank you! Yeah I’ve updated sails since that trip and they have all the things I was missing, telltales, leach lines, draft stripes etc. also very recently I got a boom kicker and vang setup to install and it should make a huge difference in sail shape and handling. Have fun this summer on the water!!!
A 25 would be fine but you might not get into as tight if spots as I did. If it has a swing keel you’ll be fine but there are sandbars and hidden rocks in a lot of areas so have a chart handy
I really enjoyed it out there and it was definitely peaceful. I love cruising through Blue Creek Bay and looking at all the cool cabins and float houses! Great place to have a houseboat!
Sleeping was comfortable enough and there’s room for two adults but I think it’s better suited for one so gear has a place to go. I like the flat bottom on the beach as its very stable even when walking around the deck. Sailing was fun and enjoyable but it was at a slower pace. We definitely couldn’t keep up (even with the ruddy Duck with just main) but found the potter very stable and capable of grand adventures.
The islands are a lot of fun but upper priest is definitely more secluded and I believe all the campsites are first come first serve! Have a great trip if you make it up there!!!!
Stunning videography, very nicely edited, etc. Brought back some happy memories of my younger years, sailing with my folks and siblings, so thanks! Subscribed.
Very interesting area, had never heard of it before. Looks blissfully unoccupied, so it's good that people don't know of it, I suppose. I learned a lot just now about the CBP, scablands and glacial floods, doing some googling, so thanks for that too!
Yeah it’s an amazing landscape. My trip was in late fall so other than a fishing tournament I had the place to myself. I imagine summer is pretty busy. The glacial flood theory is very interesting and we sail lake Pendoreille a lot, which is where they say the floodgates opened causing the lake to be over 1200 feet deep. It would have been an amazing sight seeing that much water carve out a new landscape ! Thanks for watching our videos!!
I would like to know what the dowel like piece is attached to the he rudder and the tiller. I have been researching ways/modifications with which to raise and lower the lower half of the WW P 15. What is on yours looks like a solution.
Yeah it was built by a previous owner and it definitely worked but it was kinda bulky and cumbersome. I removed it because I’m rebuilding the rudder and I think I’m going to use lines and clam cleats instead. I’ll share in a video sometime what I come up with !
Love this and you guys. Sail on as often as you can. All the best from Peterborough Ontario, where I sail my Grampian 26 out of Newcastle for the last 5 years. I had wanted a trailer sailor, but ended up going bigger, knowing how inertia works and that I'd sail more often driving 45 min to Lake Ontario to a keel boat, but love what you guys are doing so much! Enjoy and much respect!
Hey thank you so much! A keel boat on Lake Ontario sounds amazing!! I imagine there’s plenty of cruising grounds there and lots to explore. We definitely hope to sail as much as we can and hopefully in the future wander further away from home. Possibly someday we will end up in the Great Lakes on another adventure. Thanks for watching!!
What an awesome adventure! I have been looking for a camping boat, maybe one day I’ll head up north and check out some of the lakes in your videos. Keep up the videos, very inspiring.
Hopefully soon! I think we will do one more on Coeur d Alene as a group and then probably start planning for next year! Keep an eye on the Facebook group!
Been to Johnson Creek sooo many times.. My parents lived in Clark Fork for many years.. AND when I lived in Cocolalla I had my 1st sail boat. 27' retractable keel Clipper Marine. I sailed Lake Pend Oreille so many times. Every year I would take a week and just stay on the lake. A favorite mooring was WHISKEY ROCK BAY. QUIET during the week. I did put auto pilot on my tiller and that was a blessing. after 5 years or so of this and made all the mistakes I thought I could I bought a 10.7 Mtr, ( 35' ) sloop in San Diego and away I went !!! live aboard for 8 years.. Sailed mostly alone from San Diego to Ft. Myers Florida. OH YA I had adventures !!! Well I finally got married, got OLD ( 85 ) and now watch your videos that bring back so MANY great memories !! KEEP IT UP !!
It sounds like you’ve had an amazing life filled with sailing adventures in a lot of amazing places. It’s so cool that it all started out in North Idaho on our beautiful lakes. I aspire to grow old in the sailing lifestyle God willing, and hope to share the beauty of this world in my videos as long as I am able. Thank you for watching and sharing a little bit of your experiences!!!
Beautiful cruise. Thank you for your generosity in sharing it with us. That last bit reminded me of the moronic Scout leader a few years ago who actually did that on an historic natural rock bridge and destroyed it.
Thanks for watching! People can do crazy things sometimes and I hate to see natural wonders destroyed. Those rocks I was around in the video are speculated to have been put there by glaciers so hopefully nobody actually tries to ruin the amazing sights.
We used a trolling motor for the first year and it worked great. You are limited on range though and that’s the reason we got a gas outboard. our larger lakes trips can span over a hundred miles and the trolling motor battery lasts for maybe 6 miles. But If you’re patient with the wind and are confident in your sailing abilities a electric motor is is a good way to go
The outboard has a built in tank which is 1 liter. It can go 10 miles per tank or 40 miles per gallon . I usually carry a spare 2.5 gallon gas can giving me lots of range
that's a great video, thanks for sharing it with us! 2 questions: the pizza-2nd Avenue in Sandpoint? And how big is your Erickson? I sailed a 38 for a number of years.
Thank you! The pizza is 2nd Avenue and definitely the best pizza place I’ve been to. The ericson is a 30+ but we recently sold it to a friend as we are going all in in the trailerable sailboats! Loved the ericson though and it is a very high quality boat
Awesome! What a beautiful area, I would love to visit Priest Lake, we have some family in Hayden. Thanks for the rad video and commentary! I grew up sailing a Kent Ranger 20', "ICHI BAN" hull #1 designed and built by my grandpa Ken Wheeler and Ray Richards in the 70's here in Washington, we still sail her today! Happy sailing!
Wow! That is so cool that you have a piece of family history in that boat! I’ve always admired the ranger 20s and think they are a cool design and a very nice sailing boat. Happy Sailing to you as well!!!
No I don’t have anything to protect the bottom. I pick nice sandy beaches and they do not damage the boat, at least not visibly. Eventually after years and years of beaching I might need to repair the bottom with Kevlar or s glass
Man, Bravo! Standing O on this video. Have plenty of memories with my family up there on Priest and Upper Priest (although not in sailboats). Phh, what a quality lake!!! Love it, love that lake! Great video. Good clean fun!!
Thank you!! It’s definitely a special place. That was only my second time to upper priest but I’m impressed more each time we go up there. I was also excited to see how many families we’re making great memories on the water both on the lower and upper lake. Thank you for your support!!!!
My niece has a home and lives in Huckelberry bay there.. I had my 27' retractable keel sail boat in Sandpoint for 4 years. THEN went BLUE WATER SAILING !!!
Excellent video! I am a new WWP15 owner (1997) - and I noticed that your WWP15 has a rudder push/pull rod installed. I am very interested any details of the push/pull rod you would be willing to share - specifically its overall length, materials used and how the push/pull rod and rudder are connected. Thanks again for sharing your sailing adventures.
Yeah the rod was installed by a previous owner but it’s a 1”x34” oak rod with 3”x1.5” stainless L brackets where it attaches to the rudder. It’s contained at the top of the rudder stock by a piece of 1” conduit. Overall it works ok and is a cool idea but the forces needed to move it up and down are considerable. It probably needs more leverage at the attachment of the rudder. Thanks for watching the videos!!
The joys of sailing; and with friends to boot. Amazing video, thanks for sharing. Was there a clear winner, in the best all around sailor trailer boat?
Thanks, I wouldn’t say there was a best all around boat as they vary greatly and their perceived good attributes are probably based on speculation . I know I would be happy adventuring on any of the four boats!!
@ruddyducksailing oh yes, but we don't have the scale that you do. Also we don't have many public ramps with docks to tie to and parking with trailers hooked on. It seems much better set up over your side of the pond
