Modern Carnivore (www.modcarn.com) is a community of people who are interested in connecting more directly with their food. Often times this can mean hunting, fishing and foraging. The community is intended to be a place where someone who has never participated in these outdoor pursuits to ask questions, pose concerns, and if they choose to, learn how to hunt, fish and forage. So, go to www.modcarn.com and check out the stories, sign up for the newsletter and see the conversations going on in the forums. We like hearing new voices in the conversation!

We got given 2 mallards and didn't know what to do. Your video was extremely helpful . First time and took us an hour prep to cleanup. We washed the ducks to rub off remnants of wax, feather and blood. Not perfect, but pretty good for first go! Thank you

From our nutritional studies we have learned yhat you need to be coosy about your salt dource. Salt in stores is processed with high heat and has added aluminum and sugar. Unprocessed sea Salt or Himalayan Salt are good. We use Real Salt.

Excellent video. Here are a couple other tips for waxing and cleaning ducks. I buy 5 lb blocks of Plucking Wax. Brand name is Pete Rickard's Plucking Wax. I put 1/2 a block, or 2 1/2 lbs in a large pot with 2-3 gallons of water. While the water is heating, (doesn't matter if it boils, just have it covered), and the wax is melting, I "rough pluck" the ducks, removing just the outer feathers and some heavier down, leaving quite a bit of down and small feathers on the bird. You want to leave enough feathers so they pick up enough wax for a thicker coating. Otherwise, a very thin coating of wax will take forever to pick off. A thick coating can be removed in a couple minutes. The big key to this is to throw the pieces of wax containing the feathers back into the pot for use the next time, so you don't have to worry about saving wax. Half a block, (2 1/2 lbs), will be enough to wax 15-20 large ducks or 20-25 smaller ducks. Before dipping, I cut off the wings at the joint imbedded in the breast by bending the wing backwards at the breast, then there are no sharp bones to puncture the vacuum seal bag in freezer. For the same reason, I cut off the feet right at the knee joint. If you bend the foot a little the knife cuts right through the tendons holding joint together, again no sharp bones left when doing it that way. So I hold birds by head when dipping, wings and feet are off already. I toss them into the lake at our duck camp, after dipping and they harden quickly. (leave your waders on when waxing). Cover your wax pot between uses.

I feel like I've heard so many stories about people healing their brains and their nerves by eating lots of fat. In Lorenzo's oil the movie about the kid with the rare disease Adrenoleukodystrophy was amazing! his father figured out could be healed by a special oil.

MCT oil. Animal fat is wonderful. Stay always from seed oils. The body regenerates itself if given the right conditions. Stay away from all pharmaceuticals.

I'm a little bit thrown. My husband recently got some testing because he was having some issues and we went to a chiropractor who does things supposedly in the morn actual way and they found that my husband's vitamin D was extremely low has uric acid really high and his testosterone was really low. So they gave him some supplements and herbsand told him what seemed to be their one-size-fits-all diet that they recommend people to do to get healthier - no dairy, no soy, no grains, lean meats. 🤦🏼🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 i Just don't know that this is what my husband needed. They talked about adjusting and changing later on and figuring out any allergies and changing from there as well. But what you're saying is the opposite

My parents had many things they disagreed on and we're at odds with each other a lot. One of those things was my dad encouraged us to eat the fat and the gristle and everything and organs and my mom was grossed out by all of that and discouraged us from eating those things. Unfortunately I sided with my mom. It may be also genetic that I was put off by those foods but her discouragement pushed me away from them. Now I'm married to my husband who is hilariously like my dad in a lot of little ways and that includes the fat loving and organ loving eater. So I think I'm going to have to learn to change

To check the ice: use a stick/pole with pointy edge. If you can thrust through the ice with one blow it is not safe . Note ; the thickness of ice does not say all. In spring almost nothing.

I have walked over plenty of iced over lakes in order to take short cuts while hiking. I got scared a few times because there were very slushy spots, but I did make it out safely. I would never walk over an icy river; even if it was slow moving water. Although, if the river is shallow enough then it might be safe, but still, never walk over an icy river!

"Eat as much butter as you like sounds kinda good." Until you start storing the excess as body fat, then it's not so good. There is a limit to how much fat intake the body can use before it's stored.

Thanks for sharing this how-to video. I liked the "letting it rest" for five minutes in tin-foil tip mentioned. I also appreciated Chef Lukas' admonishment, "put it on the grill for 2-3 minutes AND DON'T TOUCH IT." I think I don't respect that initial sear sometimes and pay a price in sealing in the juiciness. Gorgeous video showcasing the beauty of nature and our working lands in America!

Sally, can you clarify why sunflower oil is okay in your baby formula recipe but you say to avoid it? Love your work Sally!
@stevec5192
@stevec5192 2 года назад
Just get an “organic” one. I had the same problem. But sunflower oil is extracted under high temps etc. not ideal but at least baby gets the omega6. Most important is making sure the milk is premium and keep it really cold. Our baby was on it since 6 weeks old. He’s a beast and you can see the difference between the majority of other kids. He’s never sick. Good luck

There are many variables at play with heat being the biggest one. In this video I was doing it in the dead of winter and it can be challenging to keep the smoker at temp. That said, anywhere from 2 hours to 10 hours would be a good (large) range for consideration.
