The bag was created in 1984 by Jean-Louis Dumas, the then-CEO of Hermès, in collaboration with English-French actress and singer Jane Birkin. Birkin, who died in 2014 at the age of 76, was inspired to design the bag after spilling the contents of her wicker bag on a flight and realizing she needed a more spacious bag as a mother of three. Birkin based the design on a popular Hermès model and sketched it out on a sick bag after meeting Dumas.
