A great review of a great little gizmo! I bought mine about 10 years ago, and my speed went from 5WPM to 20WPM in less than two months. I played with it every night trying to copy/translate off the air, and it's "touch and go" with that process... You really need a solid station to decode well enough. BUT (that's a big but) this also was part of my learning process! I set it 20WPM and left it there, only changing the SPACING. As I sent and copied, I learned the "SOUND" of each letter. As I improved over the course of that two months, I decreased the SPACING to 20WPM also! I could not have done this without this little gadget! It was indispensable. I don't use mine anymore because i don't need to, and haven't for years. But I still have it and will never sell it. I consider it a valued heirloom for what it has done for me!
I have an 8 million serial 940s whose 17 IF transformers lost capacity and I had to add capacitors behind all the transformers with 27pf to 220pf and success to make it work again. But I still can't fix the power drive TX signal which slowly continues to decrease to 50% since radio turning it on, which problem will disappear if I blow fresh air around on the 3rd TX mixer in the RF unit, has anyone experienced this? Please help me because I'm really almost giving up
I am thinking of an alternative to the spray foam used in the video that is available in the states would be Pro Honda spray cleaner and polish. You can get it from the Honda motorcycle dealer.
too bad you weren't able to focus in on the R-820's front panel better, I would have liked to learn a little about its various function controls. Also would have liked to hear a tiny bit more from each station you tuned in. Would you buy another one of these receivers? What is your go-to receiver now for best selectivity, sensitivity, and notch filtering? Trying to figure out if one of these Kenwoods is a better way to go than a classic Hammarlund etc. for pulling intelligible signals out of the ether.
Hi I am Jacques from Mauritius call sign 3b8gc. I have 2 ft101,one early version and one ft101b. There is some problems with both of them, can you help me to get them going??Awaiting your reply. 73 j .Pitot
I got mine in operational mint condition, very clean inside and out with just a few barely visible almost unnoticeable scuff/slide marks on the top of the cabinet and a bad unbalanced foot I can later replace. No technical glitches or problems as of yet. It was advertised with an extensive list of lab testing and alignments with everything spot on frequency. It does pretty good on receive between un-tuned antennas, sometimes SDR shines through better on a long wire, and sometimes my CB antenna does better depending on natures conditions, even while trying to reduce computer/USB, solar inverter and other noise sources. Didn't come with a microphone but later ordered one along with all three Gordon West Tech General, Extra study guides. I'm a former tech + class from the mid-90's having done all VHF/UHF/Packet BBS, APRS, etc. modes. I even got one of those custom dust covers with the 940 Model number on it, as well as for my fully 10-12 meters RCI 2995 DXCF. Shipped from Japan, unknown if it belonged to a silent key, but its in equally good hands now. The only mod on it was the battery to a no solder clip slide in and out battery holder. The only anomaly was when I took the cover off and one of the meter lights went out. After ordering replacement lights I opened it up again to replace the light and it suddenly flickered back on, so I keep the lights stored in the memory switch and VOX compartment. From Ebay to Bay, it sailed across the airwaves of the Pacific.
Wow, this reminded me of a dream I had recently that I had forgotten where I was translating thoughts, not words, using Morse code, through a process of elimination like navigating a maze! I might need to seek medical help... 😅 Cheers, and 73.
DO NOT DO NOT use acetone on anything it will not only remove any paint or print on your radio it will eat the plastic badly DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS ABOUTE ACETONE ITS EXTREMELY HARSH AND WILL MELT PLASTIC

Имею точно такой радиоприемник в идеальном состоянии. Иногда слушаю то, что хочу послушать в эфире. И свободных и не свободных радиолюбителей и вообще всё, что он принимает в своём очень широком диапазоне.
It took me a couple of years to learn code, to be able to reconise it instantly. But I stuck with it. I learnd three things 1. There is no short cuts, or tapes, Mnemonic or flash cards do not work, they will just slow you down 2. Learn by hearing not visual. 3. Learn the character's at 20 wpm 4. Learn with the Farnsworth's method 5 I have found listing to this guy, set back and head copy with Farnsworth then move on with out Farnsworth. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YrvHH1G1YHA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UDYhkKTo2Z8.html

This is the type of rig I would recommend to those recently licenced. It's a very capable rig, no whistles and bells to worry about and available at a sensible price. I haven't checked but I expect there are a few currently available on E-bay.
Hello brother I also suffer from " refrigerator blindness " the curse of not seeing what is directly in front of me. Since my wife is not correspondedly affected I survive by biting the tongue.
No reason?? I like how it gets through, even QRP, when SSB will not. I like that HOMEBREW simple gear can still be built and operated cheaply. I like that it is exclusive now and the fact that it takes an effort, attracts a nice crowd! Thanks for this video and the magic MFJ box, as it is a “gateway drug” to CW. 73 de VK2AOE. Great video and content.
Hi Darrell Thanks for the video and info about buying ft101zd. I have been left two of them by my friend who is sk now. One is working the other was for parts not working! However a simple thing like a tube forced in that bent a pin over, of the non working one, and now its ok again. I am looking for two things that maybe you can help me with, as you have lots of old ft101zd lol. No1 is a premix local unit pb-1965 complete with components. As the one in the rig has been butchered "where i guess" the crystals have been changed by someone. No2 a cw filter. as neither rig has a cw filter in them! thanks in advance. Colin
I just bought one of these in really nice condition, but tell me: Aren't the power, soft keys to left of screen, and numeric keypad supposed to have red lighting?
