I saw this movie as a teenager in the '90s, years after seeing an article in Model Airplane News about the production of the flying scenes. I loved the movie as a starry-eyed history buff and aviation enthusiast. 30+ years later, I'm an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force with nearly 20 years of experience. This movie still makes me laugh and cry.
When you realise how long he had to endure doing what he initially felt he wasn't meant to be doing, but then discover his struggles, trials and tribulations fuelled that opus, then seeing and hearing it all come together in front of all the people who meant something to him... the Defining Moment of his life.
Man, I really feel for Gertrude. Growing up surrounded by talented family members striving for success and feeling pressured into it. Learning a talent because you believe it's the only way you'll be noticed by them and not invisible.
We had a music teacher in my school, Mr. Heslip. He taught band, choir, and the fine arts. Nicest guy on the planet. He was our Mr. Holland. I haven't heard anything about him in a long while, but last I heard, he was still teaching the music and fine arts classes. I hope he's still going great and teaching amazing work.
I miss my saxophone teacher. I could play, I could play well, but I couldn't read music, I couldn't play something put in front of me. Lemme listen to it once or twice and I'd play it perfectly. Put the same music in front of me and I wouldn't know where to start. He had so much patience, that guy. Invited me to his home, (back in the day before such things were considered creepy), taught me to play Tenor Sax (instead of my Alto), he put a lot of work into me. 25 years later, I never did learn how to read music properly, I moved from saxophone to brass to drums to bass to multitrack sequencing. But the love of creating music never left me. I wonder what happened to him. I wish him well.
I realize most people will disagree with me...but I can't help but think of Mr. Holland as a coward..he had it all right there...a second chance...and he just could't pull the trigger on being the bad guy to make it come true.
The episode "Rescue Me". The girl Dr. Travis rescued, said she was sorry for coming between him and his girlfriend. She new exactly what she was doing. Girls like this, give the rest of us women, a bad name. She was doing everything women like this do, to try and seduce him. She was stalking him, just like other men, she got involved with.
My solpheccio's teacher was a nightmare like this teacher. However, this music teacher was different. He taught this young girl how to improve her talent. My solpheccio's teacher was the opposite: he wanted us to leave his class.

I hate men who disrespect their partners I mean if you don't love your wife anymore then you should divorce her not cheat. also if we normalize men cheating in the media we should normalize women cheating too because women have desires too. I Know few men in real life who truly love their wives and never cheat physically or emotionally and know the beauty of growing old with their partner and see women as their equal not a sex objects with an expiration date. if you are a faithful man who is capable of loving his partner only and for ever congratulations because you are a rare gem.
What wet dream was the script writer basing this scene on? Ugly grumpy middle aged man has sweet talented, beautiful virtuous 18 year old begging him to run away with her? And we are suppose to applaud him for his self-sacrifice, rather than see it for the obvious delusion that it is? It would have been a lot more convincing if Mr Holland was actually a serial adulterer and had hired a hooker to pretend to be the student he had a crush on. Or if Rowena was a total trainwreck with major daddy issues.
