My name's Pete! I've a PhD in biology and love plants, so I started this channel Pete vs Plants in order to combine both interests, bring you along for the ride, and hopefully give you a few laughs on the way.
I bought a Philodendron Melanochrysum the other day from Etsy. Most sellers use stock photos so newbies can tell what the plants will look like grown. Under the stock photo they showed a plant with 6 leaves, the tallest about 6in or 15cm. However the plant I got was a barely rooted clone in a black clone plug. The plant was 1in maybe 2 in or 2.54-5.08 cm. Needless to say I felt ripped off. The sad thing is this seller is an #Etsy star seller. When I contacted the seller, they did not even take the time to write back. I hope this little plant makes it, but I'm not hopeful. I look at it as a lesson learned.
Your rant was surprising since you have a child in preschool. You said the f word eight times, you said your wife said it once. That word is not necessary, I certainly hope you clean up your language around your child. There are many cacti lovers only tube that do not use fowl language. Please consider your viewers, we all do not have to watch videos with the f word being used .
Im glad I found ur videos and channel. Been struggling with 2 alocasias (quilted green and tiny dancer). Im in NY in a dark apartment. Now for the season are in my balcony. I just did exactly what u did with stingray (i want one). They’re in a clear vessel. Can i still bring it outside after that change or should i keep them indoors with grow light? I hope you can give me advice. Thanks Pete!
I got mine today for 200$ CAD ! Definetly my most expensive one in my collection, I am used to buy cuttings from facebook marketplace all the time. I did pull the trigger on it as it was on my wish list for so long !!!
Your rant totally reminded me of "The Muffin Tops" Seinfeld episode, lol.. Rebecca: Excuse me, I'm Rebecca Demore from the homeless shelter. Elaine: Oh, hi. Rebecca: Are you the ones leaveing the muffing pieces behind our shelter? Elaine: You been enjoying them? Rebecca: They're just stumps. Elaine: Well they're perfectly edible. Rebecca: Oh, so you just assume that the homeless will eat them, they'll eat anything? Mr. Lippman: No no, we just thought... Rebecca: I know what you thought. They don't have homes, they don't have jobs, what do they need the top of a muffin for? They're lucky to get the stumps. Elaine: If the homeless don't like them the homeless don't have to eat them. Rebecca: The homeless don't like them. Elaine: Fine. Rebecca: We've never gotten so many complaints. Every two minutes, "Where is the top of this muffin? Who ate the rest of this?" Elaine: We were just trying to help. Rebecca: Why don't you just drop off some chicken skins and lobster shells. Elaine: I think I might.
It's actually not the dominant sprout sucking up the auxin, but the dominant sprout secreting auxin which is trickling downwards and suppressing growth in the other sprouts.
I am having trouble finding a good guide to water and fertilizer. How high up should I fill with water? Is this similar to a start in water, and the roots won't rot if you fill the cup? Should you actually submerge the roots and allow the water to stand until consumed? I have looked at several videos and googled, but am failing to find this info.
The plastic bag is such a good idea. I have not had much success with moss. Fluval has been good so I mixed some Fluval stratum and Tree fern fiber to see how it goes. I rotted a monstera I cut to propagate. Nice vid!
Hey dude, your crispy critter silver dragon needs iron and calcium. I’ve noticed my alacosia and elephant ears have very stunted growth and grow very short and deformed. If they’re not getting the right calcium they need , especially early in the growing season. Also diatomaceous earth or some other form of organic silica can really help prevent against diseases and viruses for all plants.
Hi from Florida. I happened across your channel while looking up succulent and cacti. I recently became an addict. Love your duct tape trick. I just learned a trick from binging videos. Kitchen tongs. Enjoy your growing.
The market is weird! You have to stay on top of the Instagram and TikTok crazes The Strawberry Shake was one of those weird ones. As soon as people saw fully grown examples, the craze dipped significantly, because the variegation can look “pukey.” Currently, it’s all about Anthurium hybrids….that’s where the money is now
I’m real late to this video, but heat and HIGH CANDLES makes the variegation on those. I ACCIDENTALLY left mine in the prop tent and completely forgot about it and I have two new beautiful colored leaves. Took it back out next leaf was damn near reverted. Put it back in my controlled tent and boom! More colored leaves. I gave up. I didn’t buy a plant to stay in a tent lol. So she’s out and looks like a damn zebra 🤣 bueno
