My favourite music video on RU-vid, it's like peeling away all of the production and the layers and finding that everything at the base is even more magical than you thought it was
That jangle is killer...really genius going back to the 50s/60s in every sense...Marr could play those ringy chords all day long...Byrds Beats Buck Marr
There's something somewhat cringe about Marr and his working class schtick and virtue signalling. 'Sexist', 'Corny', 'A lot of stuff that needed throwing out'? Not sure what 80s guitarists and riffs he's talking about-EVH, Angus Young, Steve Clark, Randy Rhoads, Dave Murray/Adrian Smith possibly. Not a good look to crap over your peers even if you perceive them to be not 'hipster' cool but all of the above achieved a fame and devotion among the working classes well beyond Marr's culty hipster alternative nerdy indie scenesters. Granted he wrote some good stuff but it's really a footnote in guitar music history.
Bill Duffy your an absolute legend and your band kicks so much ass. Thanks for all the great music you gifted this world with🔥🎸 I'm new at guitar and an working on She sells sanctuary and man is it a pleasure. Again thank you thank you thank you!!!!
And no matter what he does after he is 25, and no matter what Morrissey does, their whole life and legacy will be encapsulated in these 3 years when The Smith was active. I am sure that when they split up, they were thinking that their life was ahead of them. In fact, it was behind them. A genius lyricist and singer with a genius guitarist get together at the right time in the right place and the most amazing indie rock band of all time was born.
I genuinely believe Johnny Marr is 2nd to Jimi Hendrix in terms of that whole 'guitar as an extension of the human body' thing they both have going on. That ability to just pick up a guitar and KNOW it inside and out as if it were a part of you.
Fantastic to see an absolute legendary guitarist pay a heartfelt tribute to one of his guitar heroes! The way that Johnny picked up that Yamaha and played a Bert tune tells us that his recollection of the great Bert Jansch was from his heart. Johnny Marr is an exceptional guitarist, one of the finest!
