This song was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. They originally offered it to Anne Murray to record, but she passed on it. I wonder how it would have sounded if she had recorded it first. Either way, every song is subject to multiple interpretations, and the Cyndi Lauper one is still my favorite.
As a member of the Northern Arizona University Chorale under Dr. Jo-Michael Scheibe, I sang this at the 1991 ACDA National Convention in Phoenix. I sang 2nd tenor at the time, floating away on that straight-tone high G for what seemed forever. I got confimation a day or two ago, that Eric Whitacre was inspired by the Dinerstein 'David' (which in turn was inspired by the Chorbajian, as noted below). I'm sure that the Whitacre has also inspired other settings of 'David'. Interesting how it all comes around again. And congrats on making a much more advanced recording of this than we ever did (though we also fought with ceiling pops and police sirens)! You're a very outstanding choir!
A Thousand Thanks Tonality! This is such sublime beauty, what a great performance! Please know you're inspiring choristers elsewhere who are busy preparing this lovely piece for their concerts. Yum. ☮💜🎙🎵🎷🕯
As a member of the Hartt Chamber Singers, we had the distinct honor of premiering this amazing piece. It was always exciting to get a new composition from Norman (I sang all 4 of his SATB works), but this was special. Even during the very first sight reading, we all knew this was something extraordinary. The year before, we had done When David Heard by John Chorbajian and the lyrics moved Norman to put his own interpretation on the text. It's hard to believe that next year will be 50th anniversary of this piece. I am beyond thrilled to see that it is still being performed. It is an emotional piece that is one of the most taxing pieces for a chorus. He knew the Hartt Chamber Singers well and he pushed us with this piece, You have done a wonderful job of capturing this piece with this wonderful performance. Very well done. Congratulations.
O.K. Ma'am WHEN Are You And Kirk Franklin Putting Out A Whole Gopsel Album!!!!!!! We NEED THIS Especially Now !!!!!! I Keep Watching .....BLESSINGS🎤🎼🎤🎼🎶😪😥💖
Kelly you killed it!!! You are an amazing person. I wish you would always sing. I missed you so much when you didn't. This video right here says why you should sing. Thanks for the wonderful video. 👍😁🙏🙏😇😇🥲
Choirs have an innate tendency to break out in song wherever they are. On one of our out of state performances, we burst out in song while flying to Chicago. It’s always wonderful to do it. 🙌🏽🗣️🎶🎵⛪️
