These online Town Hall discussions are so severely needed. This topic is rarely talked about within such a diverse group. My personal opinion is that what would help to eliminate racism is the removal of barriers to Black and Brown People. Be Fair to ALL,. Including Black and Brown People. Fairness in hiring..Scholarships for Interns and students of Color as well as the rest of the vast diversity of candidates. There's more than enough wealth for everyone.

To Ms. Hooks input: The problem is not the training. We had extensive OB training and experience in my residency program. Many of us had very idealistic and altruistic motives to provide “full” family practice services to OB. The reality, even 30 years ago, was that without robust support and integration of primary care OB services with local obstetricians and hospitals, it is not feasible, practical, or safe. Federal or state support of malpractice costs is also critical. The demand for OB services is decreasing in many rural communities. For example, one colleague, a solo practitioner from my residency program, provided OB services in his rural community for most of his time in practice. But eventually, the demand for his services dropped off to such an extent that It was not practical to continue.

Support, strengthen and sustain is a GREAT catch phrase. Additionally, the AAFP has a golden opportunity in COVID crisis to root our advocacy in VALUES of the AAFP - health as a human right; and coverage for ALL, rooted in foundational primary care - policy values adopted and codified at COD of 2018 and 2019. I encourage ALL AAFP members who contact their legislators to BEGIN with our VALUES: we believe in health as a human RIGHT; and support universal access to timely, acceptable, and affordable health care that is FOUNDATIONAL in primary care. I INVITE our BOD to ADOPT such phrasing into all 'public forward' advocacy of the AAFP, to wit: "AAFP, which represents 136,700 family physicians and medical students across the country, and is the only specialty dedicated entirely to primary care, believes that health is a human right, and advocates for universal access to care that is foundational in primary care..." Now that's a HOOK to get a politician to listen....
