We are a UK based Metal Detecting channel for www.thedetectinghub.co.uk a friendly place to chat about detecting, get expert finds identifications and get equipment advice. We will be reviewing the machines and equipment we use in our hobby, making "How to" videos, and anything else we think will help people getting started in the hobby of metal detecting.
The black on a silver coin is mostly silver sulphide, so I can see the egg working as eggs contain sulphur. With the elastic band, if it's natural rubber then it will be vulcanised, this makes it more elastic and stops it perishing so fast, this involves adding sulphur, so that makes sense too. The black you will be producing via your method will be silver chloride, different compound but it will look similar, it goes grey or black when exposed to light or heated. So ends the little chemistry lesson, cheers for the video. Jamesey1981. :)
Thanks for that, Jamesey and, given the stink that comes off silver in the silver foil method of cleaning, I should have known sulphur would be involved somewhere along the line!
@@thedetectinghub1034 Yeah, the stink is hydrogen sulphide, it's pretty toxic so try not to breathe it in, but it's such a small amount that it's not a major issue. When you do the silver foil method you are converting silver sulphide to silver and aluminium sulphide, so some of the tarnish converts back to silver. I have a method using the same principle that is good for milled silver coins, gets them looking like new, so just for the everyday ones, nothing valuable, I'll post it on the forum along with the explanation for how it works.
Good honest review there, thank you. I'm not usually a reference book type, but that first one is full to the brim with finds we make quite often....Will have to add that to my letter to Santa this year
I always thought you rubbed the foil and it had to be spit! Lucky I don’t use that method, nor lemon juice. However I might try the foil one now I know it’s not going to damage the coin 👍🏼
"Good gear that, i'll have a bag of that"......quote of the week right there...haha....good video Figgis....and so pleased you cleared up the spit" or "water" thing...much prefer the latter
Very good John! I was planning on filming exactly the same tomorrow seeing as we shouldn’t be getting out tomorrow! Watch this space and hope all well!
Cheers, Alexander. The end results on various cleaning techniques depend a lot on the properties of the coin itself as well as how the individual applies the method. You might get entirely different results but I'm certainly looking forward to seeing them. The more info out there the better!
Nice vid and good info... I was planning on doing something similar ( but with lemon juice mainly) but you beat me to it! And probably with better results! Well done
Thanks, Alexander. I'll be putting up examples of all the popular cleaning methods but please do put up your own: while there may be some crossover, you will reach people we don't and sharing info is best achieved when reaching the widest possible audience. So fill yer boots, chap!
Hi Peter, and thanks for the comment. The answer is both, really: it's a mild alkali which helps dissolve grime and the drier it's used then the more its abrasive effect.
@@thedetectinghub1034 Thanks for that it's most appreciated...I will probably get drummed out of the brownies for suggesting this, but in my limited testing a household cleaning product called Pink Stuff works really well also.. it's a very mild abrasive cleaning paste told in tubs in the likes of Home Bargains...Just make sure to it rinse the coin well after cleaning...
I think what you said at the beginning of the vid was most poignant - that through trial and error we all settle on own ways of doing it ... I’m looking forward to the copper coin cleaning tips!
Thanks to Oxgirl for her fantastic leather work in making this Metal Detecting Pin Pointer holder and giving it away at The Detecting Hub forum ....Please come along to our forums and say hello and join in with the fantastic finds and experience we have here.
well done winners!! Great fun..... so well done to the team for getting the venture off to such a flying start. Blimey when you said that wheel was noisy i thought 'how noisy can it be?' Very is the answer. lol
That, young bruce, was a cracking job. I learned a lot! Mark you, opening a pm from Cath LIVE was a risk I'd not have taken meself but kudos to you for taking the risk!
