A channel dedicated to all of the men and women who made the American Forces Network (AFN) and the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) a reality for those military and civilians serving overseas.

I am an Army Brat with a German Mother who grew up in Germany during the 70's and 80's watching and listening to AFN and AFRTS.

I collect AFN and AFRTS programs and those silly command information spots or "commercials". If you have any that you'd like me to post on my channel, please contact me.

Check out my various AFN/AFRTS RU-vid playlists where I have attempted to group similar items together. If you have suggestions on additional playlists, please let me know.

You can contact me at: garry-youtube@usa.net

Please note - this channel is not affiliated, sponsored, or connected in any way to the DoD, AFRTS, AFN, or any other government or commercial agency. This channel is strictly done out of love for AFN and AFRTS

I'm slightly surprised that Admiral Hyman Rickover wasn't included in the line up? However, he had his issues and wasn't mellowing with age.

My first Air Force assignment from 1983-86. What an exciting time that was for a young me. In many ways the best assignment I had during my 21 years. I occasionally fly into the Frankfurt Airport and it is so strange to see there is literally nothing left (except the hotel). It’s all an air freight terminal now.

Thanks for your note. I agree, one of my fondest memories is flying into Frankfurt when I was heading back from college and seeing Rhein-Main AFB as we were landing. Great times indeed.

I remember this airing on AFN and looking for myself during the segment to no avail. 40 years later and I'm shocked to see a young Angie Staley, who I would become friends with in high school at SHAPE was interviewed. Time flies.

That was an interesting news broadcast. I was already out of the Army by 85, but was not aware that 3 soldiers were killed and 9 others injured in the Pershing mishap. I do remember well that any problem that involved those missiles got a lot of attention in W. Germany. In addition, Mrs. Mulligan discussed the death of Maj. Nicholson, the MI Officer, in E. Germany. I didn't know anything about that. I read later that the activities he was involved with were considered quite dangerous. Moreover, when he was shot, the Soviet/E. German authorities would not even get him to emergency care.

I have a whole video with different AFN stories about Maj Nicholson and his tragic death. I will post it in the coming weeks.

It's unfortunate that when clips of broadcasting personnel are added here, some current follow up isn't provided on them. Many of these segments are 30 to 40+ years old. I was able to discover that the anchorperson, Sgt. Donahue, ultimately became an E-8 and headed up the AFN station in Hessen, in 2003. He may have been in the Army longer than that, but I don't know? However, TSgt. Larabee passed away in 2020. She was 62. She retired from the Air Force as an E-9, after 26 years. The many tributes to her were exceptionally nice. It sounds like she was a wonderful person and great NCO. Her MOS was apparently in meteorology/weather, but not broadcasting.

Yes. I remember him also. He had a very good progressive rock program. He's clearly alive and well, as he submitted this recorded interview with John Mayall. He maintains a Facebook page and indicates that he retired from the DoD in Public Affairs. It sounds like he had a great career. Good for Bill!
