very well done, lord mark approved. although i disagree with the hard platinum solder thing, if you use 1400-1700 it shouldnt show much if at all when properly sanded and polished. ofc welding the same metal back is ideal but the solder comes very handy especially in construction or light soldering to avoid using gold and cross contaminating the metals.

Amazing video. How much would a service like this cost
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions Месяц назад
Thanks! The cost is dependent on material type, size of stones, types of stones, and amount of work that needs to be done. For something like this, one can probably expect a minimum of $150 for a jeweler to even get started, but it can easily be much more depending on the different factors. For a ballpark, expect $150 - $500 for something like this in the video.

Do you give the customer the old gold pieces back since that’s where the stamping is located?
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions Месяц назад
Unless the customer wants to do something different, typically, the metal type of clasp that is removed is replaced with the same metal type. For example, if we remove a 14K clasp, then we are replacing it with a 14K clasp. Also, both the old and new clasps are typically marked as such. If you are replacing it with a different type of clasp, it would be best to try to notate the chain as being something else - either a tag or something - so a future jeweler knows they are two different material types.

How much would this cost to replace the setting? And would white gold be better than platinum for it?
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 5 месяцев назад
Prices can vary across regions, jewelers, and stone size/shape. A ballpark estimate for a replacement would be $200-$500. Typically, platinum is considered more durable and longer lasting than a white gold head.

thank you for sharing. So its ok to solder joints with stones already set?
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 6 месяцев назад
It depends on the stone type. Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, moissanites tend to be ok if set in silver and gold, but don't quench the piece after soldering (just leave it to cool). For most other stones, you risk damaging them from the heat.

Hey. Would you know how I could fix a ring it’s a heart stone shape and the prong on the bottom of the heart totally came off. It been bending back sence I got it and I went to a jewler and asked for it to be fixed and they said no it’s fine it’s how it’s supposed to be and told me to just not wear sweaters and to push it back myself when it comes up. But now it’s totally gone? If you can help that would be great.
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 7 месяцев назад
Hi Sarah - I would find a different jeweler. At this point, the prong needs to be rebuilt. As long as it is a decent piece of jewelry (silver or gold), most jewelers will work on it. If it is cheap costume jewelry, I can see a lot of jewelers not wanting to work on it (because of the metal composition). If you want to send us some pictures, we can provide further information. How much would this service normally cost? What is your charging rate?
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 8 месяцев назад
Pricing is going to vary widely based on size of the clasp as well as the metal type. Most jewelers will probably start at $35 for a smaller silver clasp, but it can go well over $150 for solid gold lobster clasps. We typically go by customer request as to if the metal type is matched or not as well as the type of clasp. Feel free to reach out to us if you would like us to quote it via our website.

Why would anyone in their right mind change from a highly secure form of clasp with historical significance to a cheaply made modern lobster clasp? I swear people don't know what to do with excess money sometimes.
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment! In this case, the clasp was pretty well worn / broken, so they were just looking to have it wearable again.

Would it be hard to take a ring I have to a jeweler and have him change the diamond ? They are similar sizes both 8x6mm stones but one is 8.88x6.36 while the other is just 8x6.
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 8 месяцев назад
You would want to take this to a jeweler and have them look at it. If the height of the stone is significantly larger, it might make it more of difference for an existing setting. Worse case, you might have to replace the head to accommodate a larger stone (especially if the head is worn). But, that type of task is pretty common for a jeweler.

Hey so i have a hollow 8mm chino link chain w a lobster clasp, is it possible to make it a box clasp with that? Esp if its hollow
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 9 месяцев назад
Yes - it can be done. You would have to cut one of the chain links in half. One half gets attached to one side of the box clasp, the other side gets attached to the other side of the box clasp. Depending on your skill and the amount of metal, you can solder or laser it.

Googled how to replace a lobster claw clasp and this was the first result. Bent is not broken. Bending a piece of soft metal is not repairing a broken clasp. Might want to edit your title.
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback!! Hoping you were able to find a video that talked about replacing it! Typically, if the lobster clasp needs to be removed/replaced, you would need to do it at where it meets the chain either directly or via a jump ring.
@mikebarger138
@mikebarger138 11 месяцев назад
Yes, really I was looking for any clever ideas that did not require solder work. But honestly, that is the only correct way to do the replacement. I am more than capable of soldering anything, but I do not have the tools to solder gold. And the cost in tools to do a single repair is probably not worth it. Might just have to pay to have it done.
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 11 месяцев назад
@@mikebarger138 Yes - the jump ring holding the lobster clasp to the chain is typically soldered. The only thing that I can suggest is if you have a thicker / less pliable jump ring and to make sure you have a flush fit where both ends of the jump ring meet together it might be an option. You would have to see the largest size of jump ring that the lobster claw could accommodate. But, you would also have to evaluate that solution vs what the chain is supporting in terms of weight.

how thick of a silver sheet did you use in this video? and how thick of a silver sheet have you used or the machine is capable of ?
@fgconclusions
@fgconclusions 11 месяцев назад
We used 1mm in the video. It could probably go up to 2mm, but that is a guess. To cut metal, it does multiple passes through the metal until it reaches the required depth. But there will be a limit as to how deep it can go based on the cutter tool itself (even with multiple passes). You might want to contact Best Built directly and and ask them.

@@marnien1161 Hi @marnien1161 - Sorry for the delay, just saw this. The best bet is to remove the stones, do the work and then reset them. If you have access to a laser and are careful, you might be able to use the laser for repair on it.
