Thanks for the video. It was nice to see what the show looks like. I'm about to go to my first pen show tomorrow, the DC one (2024); it's only about a 30 minute drive for us. I wanted to see what it's like. I'm not into fountains pens yet, considering it, but I'm big into journaling. Was wondering what, if any, journals they have at these shows; hoped it's be a good place for that too.
I love the progress and honesty in your video and I am amazed by your ability to go on... I tried urban sketching... first time I sketch one of the Japanese Cafes You did also (the one with a little birdy mark on the front of the building) and after some time a crooked small building but I was so angry at myself that that it didn't look exactly as I wanted it that I never tried again... but it is my problem with perfectionism rather then lack of skill. Thank you for an awesome video you gave me courage to try it again since I am going to Malaga and hope to capture some nice moments with only pen :)
I have been avoiding fountain pens for years because of the way that they're wet writers most of the time, but I have recently been forced to switch in my effort to greatly reduce my waste in my writing habit. Even the rollerball refills, individually wrapped in plastic and it drives me insane. So now I have some actually refillable pens. Only enough for my main writing and editing colors. And when the carts they shipped with can't be refilled anymore I'll probably convert them to eyedroppers. Worst part was doing the deep dive to figure out what nib sizes to get. EF. Even the pilot F feels a little too inky from time to time vs me have signos.
The dropping thing is BS honestly. I dropped the same ballpoint pen with two different refills this week and both times it landed on the tip and destroyed the refills. You drop a ball point on the writing tip and it will never write the same again. At least with fountain pens you can replace the bent nib if you can't fix it.
What a cool idea! I wish I kept a notebook for my first playthru of elden ring. This journal idea is really interesting though! Thank you so much for sharing!!
I have the system but I don't like the TN branded notebook because the elastic ties on the back instead of the edge. I'm only recently into the system though and so far I really do love it.
I got into TNs and my first ever was a B6 Chic Sparrow cover back in 2020. I haven’t looked back since! I love how the notebooks are. The 120 page lightweight paper inserts last me six months. And I can get a notebook too if I want.
I use fp at work and a lot of ppl ask me if I realy like it then I went to Walmart and buy a pack of pilot Varsity at this day 3 of the 5 uses fountain pens. I like the look of the Lamy Safari but the grip is a no no for me.
I love TN, I have been using them since 2016 ❤ but I have major reservations about the quality of the plastic inserts. The pocket that I have had since 2016 has started… to decompose? After a few years it became super stiff and very very wrinkled. So had to buy a new one. And I hate their craft paper 😅 I bought a few refills and every time I start using them I’m pissed 😂 nothing sticks to them and most of my pens don’t work well with this paper. But everything else is perfect and I really love the company 😊❤
EBay is where I ordered my Kyoto edition, it’s my first official TN, I have a September leather passport and standard and ready to upgrade to the real thing :) Just a note on your negative side of only 64 pages per refill, I see that as a positive, as someone who buys notebooks and none of them gets filled then I feel regret for not filling them. At least with a smaller note book I get a boost of dopamine every time I fill one :)
Have you tried Lochby's journaling system? Similar to the travelers it works with inserts which I love but they are a5 so I don't find myself going through as many inserts at travelers. I think the only con for me is that it might not be considered as portable as the travelers.
I have 2 standard Traveler's Company covers and 1 off-brand passport size one and I love them all. I use one of my standards for cafe journaling as well as memory keeping as it's intended but I use the passport one for bullet journal-style rapid logging. I love both of the styles for very different reasons too.
Also I'm relatively new to actively using my TN although I've had my plain blue cover for a while. I switch planners a lot between size, pre-printed vs. hand drawn etc. So I'm still settling in but I'm excited to log my adventures in it.
As I started to get interested into TN i fall down the rabbit hole. And i decided against the original und went to a third party company. I am still useing these covers and try from time to time TN inserts. And i got printables for TN now i am just searching for the right paper 😂 But i am also constantly switching between "bound" notebooks and disk bound notebooks 🙈
First time here. Good video. I have been using Travelers for going on 3 years. Last year I picked up an olive edition to use only for comic art and story writing. My main one which is a black leather I keep as a journal and random sketches and ideas and invite artist I know to add to it. I think what got me hooked was the paper, the ink and water colors don't bleed through. Yes this cost me a lot. But, when has good art supplies been cheep? anyway, I subscribed and I'll be watching you from time to time. P.S. I have started ordering extras to give as gifts this holiday season to fellow artist.
The lightweight paper notebook is the best value with 128 pages. Also, if you buy it from a country that rolls up their sales tax into the price, it is generally cheaper. Also, love visiting the partner stores. My first purchase was a limited edition Traveler’s Train passport sized, a weekly insert, a pencil board and one of the B sides and rarities cloth wallets.
Really enjoyed this, I'm 2 years and 2 TRC in (one regular and one passport both in Camel) i run the free diary daily #013 for my daily writing challenge, then the lined insert #001 for writing my journal, usually a page a day and fully covered in stickers and Washi tape, a grid #002 that i use for lists, i also have the cotton wallet with stickers, my esterbrook bookmark and my photos in it. My passport has the plastic wallet, much cheeaper than the cotton one and not as nice by far, a lined #001 for general notes, and 2 grid #002 that store my reading list, currently inked pens and fitness tracker. I have the watercolour, kraft, pocket stickers, refill postcards, b sides letter pads and many more inserts that rotate in. my biggest issue is storing them, the binders are expensive for what they are, can't take many inserts and just aren't ideal, i really would like to find a better longer term storage solution
definitely a little pricey on the inserts BUT it's also for someone who cares about paper quality- it's incomparable to most popular US available notebooks. The benefit is also low cost for trial and error compared to the widely available Moleskine or Leuchtturm, which would be the cost of like 3-4 inserts for one single paper type. I think the value comes from the 1. portability 2. quality of papers and 3. the ability to literally create your own perfect notebook for art, planning, journaling all within the same notebook simultaneously. Great review!
I love the TN concept and utilize it myself but, as someone who does leather work and makes my own covers... I feel like the TN covers are WILDLY overpriced. After making my own, out of high quality Hermann Oak, they come out to like $5 per cover and they're not hard to make... it's just a flat of leather, cut to shape, punch a couple of holes, and maybe dye.
I use my TN only when I’m traveling.. I use hobonichi for daily memory keeping.. the TN being that shape is because maps from tourist information counter are folded that way.. Oh.. have you guys bought the blackwing set yet😅😅😅

Your point about trying to write or draw close to the spine is so crucial! For my passport watercolor book notebook I physically pull it out of the Traveler's leather cover to use it. Then slip it back in when I am done.
I’m a TN fan. Have been since 2021. Like you love the quality. I use a mix of Travellers Co and Sterling Ink inserts for that fountain pen quality. I also use SI inserts for the generosity of pages!!! I use TN for work and journalling.
Been on the fence about getting into this system for a long time now because I love my hobonichi and just bound books in general. Honestly, you've sold me on the TN tho with this video alone, and I'm taking this as a sign to just go for it lol 💖 Now I have to choose a size...... 😭
I just went down the TN road last month. Absolutely love the system. I bought my cover on Etsy from a small leather maker in Ohio (I wanted 4 internal elastics, and to support a small business.) Their quality is AMAZING . I do have a passport from Travelers Company too, also great quality
I make my own inserts, at my local art store, I get fabriano paper, I cut it, sew it, it may seem like a lot of work, but I try to make at least 5 notebooks each time.
OMG what an excellent review! That was PERFECT! I do have a passport olive TN and I love it. I got it in October 2023. So I’m still trying to get settled in it. But for now it has a monthly calendar, weekly calendar, blank notebook for everything I need to write down, and a couple of dashboards (Chic Sparrow). I do still need to get charms, clips, the infamous fountain pen and pen clip, and of course more note books! Oh and I will definitely be checking out those stickers and your Etsy shop! 😊. Yes, it can get pricey but it’s my enjoyment, and organization. Love it, love it, love it!!! ❤❤❤. I will be buying more in the future! Thanks again! You are hysterical and so on point! God bless you!
i'm trying it as a commonplace notebook, and getting a passport size to use as a wallet. but i've definitely been using (well-researched) third parties because a bitch is poor
