I'm also a first responder in a very small town with very little budget looking for a cost effective way to create a Zello gateway. The JPS hardware isn't exactly cheap though.
I was like "isn't Zello a banking thing?" Google: How does Zello make money? The app itself is free and Zello makes money off of its commercial offering called ZelloWork, for which the company has about 1,000 business costumers. Think of it as a dispatch or communication service for companies with employees who don't typically sit at their desks - such as transportation companies.Sep 10, 2017 ---- Zello Work offers encryption for all one-to-one and channel communications. Consumer Zello only offers encryption for private messages, as channels are public and anyone can listen. What is a Zello work network? - Zello Help Center. A Zello Work network is a private domain created when signing up for Zello Work. Please choose your network name carefully when signing up for Zello Work, as you will have to create a new network in order to change the network name. After the creation of your network, you'll see your network name on the Dashboard. - Zello is a tech software company in Austin, Texas, U.S., known for the Zello app, which emulates push-to-talk (PTT) walkie-talkies over cell phone networks. i can not locate the zello work menu you show at 3:54. do you have a link to download that zello work application? the one i keep find have very limited options
Have you, by chance, set up a Zello for work channel with a scanner on it? 100% of my mutual aid neighbors are on different analog VHF frequencies and different dispatch centers. I'm trying to figure out what the user experience is on the phone. I have our primary dispatch channel on a JPS gateway (started 'home grown' and then got budget) so everyone is comfortable with the Zello app now but I'm thinking the phones will chirp the day away with the scanner traffic.
If all you’re wanting to do is scan, that’s extremely easy to do.. You could do it with a scanner or rtl dongle. Scanner, just use a standard 3.5mm cable from the scanner to the mic input of the computer (highly encourage using a $10 ground loop isolator), open an instance of Zello Work, add a gateway instance, and set the receive audio to the mic input of the 3.5 coming in. SDR, just run a dongle, whichever sdr software you like, and set a virtual cable to the input instance of Zello Work with the same steps as the scanner input. You can go into the setting of the Zello app on your phone and turn off all the annoying chirps and alerts. I Hope that helps.
Question: Can you show how the small PCB connects to the back of the Motorola radio? I am interested in setting this up on a Motorola XTL2500 or an XTL5000 but I am not sure if the PCB will work or if I need to pin out specifically for those models.
You would need to pin specifically for those models. I’ve not found a device on the market that is plug and play for the XTL series. If you contacted a company like RoxiTech, they would likely have that cord available with their Zello setup, but nothing readily available to buy that I’ve found.
Now does the phone have to be on the same network WiFi wise as the host computer ? Interested in this for our volunteer EMS squad. We use a vhf repeater along with a separate trunking system. Would be neat and helpful for our squad members to have access to the vhf repeater without carrying a radio
Nope, any internet connection will do. That was kind of our thoughts too, we have a VHF repeater with poor coverage among our entire area. We have this app on our truck iPads, truck smartphones, and employee phones. They can access the radio channel from anywhere they have internet.
Does the CDM allow for local control as well? Can you use the mic and access the radio network through the radio or is it no longer usable as a “base” radio.
Zello is great, but it requires internet to work. Anyone know of any ROIP gateways or peripherals that allow you to simply setup your own dhcp or static IP addresses and communicate over any LAN/WAN without relying on 3rd party cloud services? I've yet to come across anything that is cheap and flexible.
Mumble will do the trick, it allows local hosting - the server can be run on the gateway computer. I've got a developmental Mumble-P25 LMR link running for long-term stability testing and am pleased with it.
Trying to set up a system like this for a dispersed hospital system we could monitor each other. This seems like a great setup. Could something like this be used for say five different remote sites?
I’ve noticed that you have the 16 pin device flip over . I’ve seen that 16 pin device Faced the other way . Does it diferentiate from radio to radio . Motorola models ?
That’s how this particular pin just happened to work. I’m not sure if it was built upside down or what, but if I try the other way it doesn’t work for me.
@KD9PCD Radio just wanted to let you know that if you can help me out with some trunking program parameters in the XTS radios that would be cool if you can help me set up a system on one of my 2500 radios if you have experience with that as I'm just starting to learn the digital trunking programming stuff but it's not as easy as it used to be with analog type 2 systems that were so easy to put in for example of one of those MTS 2000s that was a piece of cake and so easy to do but with this whole p25 thing it takes it to a whole new level and I really would like some pointers if you can maybe come down to where I'm at in southeast Wisconsin Waukesha County
Well I live in Waukesha Wisconsin and I noticed that this is in Dane County where this was filmed it looks like I was always wondering how that was all set up in your neck of the woods we have something similar in our new Dispatch Center that we just got installed using Motorola MCC 7500 consoles but the setup is similar to the rack with all the radios on it in a separate room I was hoping to try to set something like that up in my bedroom at home but I would have to have your help or something like that doing so because it was pretty nice to have once completed that way I can monitor different traffic everywhere and be able to respond right away so maybe you can come on over and give me a hand with setting things up I used to be an amateur radio operator until political things happened with some of the radio clubs in my neck of the woods and let's just say that I'm not on the air anymore with no desire to use that part instead I'm using VHF license free m u r s and FRS with other things such as scanners and whatnot it would be neat to have all the stuff patched in so I can at least enjoy some nice console audio for a change
I am working on setting up the near exact setup minus ZelloWork, I'm using the free version. No matter what I try the received audio from the radio will not pass through to the zello gateway and back to the phone/computer... Any ideas? 73 de AD4GC
@@grayphox1848 I have both the free and access to ZelloWork, I can't either to recognize received audio from the radio and transmit it back through zello. Any suggestion?
hello friend, will there be any possibility that I make a video tutorial explaining step by step how to configure the radio and zello please I have had problems configuring it
@@kd9pcdradio I sent you out an email with some issues I ran into during the setup. Zello doesn't allow you to download the same version of ZelloWork that you are using! HELP!!!
gud day sir , do you have knowledge on electronics ? mine is only a radio baofeng UV82 with BOOSTER on it and a ZELLO apps on my ANDROID cellphone ,thats it , no WIFI no COMPUTERS only DATA that last a year for only 4$ to load here in philippines , my set up has no LATENCY and its REALTIME, i only use a 4 RELAY CHANNEL DTMF tone decoder and a SOUNDCARD wirh relay to switch the PTT of the radio , i do not use the VOX of that radio its too long to release the PTT of the radio causing too much delay, instead i use soundcard , why BAOFENG UV82 its because it has a VOICE prompt to hear it when you change CHANNELIZED FREQUENCY , even when your far away you can change the FREQUENCY of a radio buy KEYING button 1-2-3-4 on your handling cellphone, you will hear the channel frequency on your holding cellphone when you change frequency channel that program on your radio , its economical . . .
gud day sir , theres so much radio gadget theres too much , mine is only a baofeng radio UV82 with BOOSTER and a CELLPHONE android as a ZELLO gateway , my set up is a VoIP no LATENCY and REALTIME wherever i go i can change my CHANNELIZE frequency only to use a 4 channel DTMF tone decoder, i only bring my cellphone as a walkie talkie ,i can modulate on any frequency i program on my BAOFENG UV82 just KEY button 1-2-3-4 i can change my frequency on my radio, and using only DATA that last a year no more computer even wifi internet,
If you could find the appropriate connector, it would probably work. However, the R1 connector comes with a standard 16 pin Motorola accessory connector and I’m not sure where I would begin looking for one for Kenwood.
@@kd9pcdradio The NX5000/VM5000 mobiles have excellent I/O control to the rear DB25 connector. I've got a VM5000 connected to a Mumble server using a Signalink interfaced to the DB25.
Hey Question. Is there a reason that you did not choose the com port for receive audio as well. I originally had TX on Com port and RX on Vox like you do. However I noticed that I could choose Com port on RX as well. Seems to be working fine. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a hidden reason I did not know about?
I have problem with RX side when use COM port configuration same like on video. USB Detection part works great, but when I use COM port then TX side is perfect, much better than VOX, but RX side don't work what ever I choose. Do you have something on mind that I need to set?
When I contacted RoxiLink, they advised me that I could pretty much choose any radio, as they had cables to fit 95% of radios in use by public safety. The Kenwood TK-790 that I used for my work setup had to have some soldering work in order to make it compatible. With the EchoLink R1, the only radios I believe it’s compatible with are the Motorola radios with 16 or 20 pin connectors on the back, so the CDM series was the easiest for me to use. It then only had some programming modifications that it needed.
@@kd9pcdradio is there an email or way to contact you so I could get some help on my idea. I want to put a mobile radio in my vehicle, then have one set up at my house and use to to talk to each other back and forth on zello. If you have any ideas I could use some help
I was originally looking at the roxi link gateway, but they wanted around 200 I believe. I then saw your first video and decided to buy the R1 off eBay for $50. Took a month to come in, but I got it all hooked up today and it works great. What is your opinion on the roxi vs the R1?
Honestly, they both have seemed to work identically well. However, I think the RoxiLink probably lends to more radio applications. When I was talking with them, they told me that they pretty much have a cable for any radio. I’ve only been able to find a cable for the R1 that interfaces with a Motorola 16 (or 20) pin connector. Otherwise, I think both work equally great! The RoxiLink has a little advantage on the cable because it’s only one USB for the audio, where the R1 is 2 USB cables, but other than that 🤷♂️
Would you care to share the settings to make it work? I have one hooked to a Motorola CDM-1250, zello will talk through the radio but nothing the radio hears will come back through zello. Any ideas?
The two Kenwood TK-790 radios are connected with the RoxiLink gateway module. The modules are then plugged in to the computer and run an instance of “Zello Work” which allows the radio traffic to go back and forth.
The federal console is completely separate - it controls the tornado sirens in the village. Zello is not set up with our dispatch console, I was just pointing it out. We have 10 radios that are set up to a separate room on a computer to allow a small dispatch-type set up. This is all just at our fire department.
@@rampartcountyfiredepartmen9497 we run multiple instances of Zello Work on the computer and then point each USB input and output to the appropriate instance. Each of the Roxi Link gateways are 1 USB cord for both transmit and receive, so we just point the appropriate gateway to the appropriate login for Zello Work.
Good afternoon on this Friday October 7th 2020. I just have a quick question for you. I understand that you have 10 radios for dispatching. Would it not be possible to run Zello work on several cheap micro or mini computers with the Roxi link or R1 connected to each radio?
@@cleare8 the radios that we have set up for dispatching utilize the rear DB25 connector already. That’s what connects them to the dispatch console. If we didn’t have that, then yes, you could run multiple instances of Zello Work and run several radios to a single computer. That’s how I have my Zello set up currently.
