Ya this is awesome but wish there was a little more explanation, I can see that there's an aminor arpeggio going up then a b arpeggio going down, but putting some description like that would be great
Hello, this is a compilation from the 130 or so youtube lick lesson videos I've made over the years. Also, the entire point is that there's no talking - just pure licks. These were made during a time on youtube where all guitarists would do is talk instead of actually teach licks, so I went hard the other way.
That is a good question, and one which is quite a mystery. Is index finger and thumb motion a flourish? As in, is it purely aesthetic? Or does it actually contribute to some people's picking technique? It really isn't clear. What we do know is that it's how we humans perform very small and very precise motions with our evolved "Precision Grip". Try to draw a small letter "e" with a pen, and you will notice how it's entirely index finger and thumb motion. So to summarize, it's likely just another instance where our innate, human instincts kick in when trying to perform small and precise movement. But know that index finger and thumb motions only work at slow to moderate speeds. You will need to develop pure wrist for fast playing, and then eventually elbow recruitment for hyperspeed.

Thank you. I will message them now and ask. I usually get turned down a lot due to the world operating under nepotism (people don't work with me simply because they don't know me). But I like your suggestion, and I will see what they reply with =)
hey man i just watched your old picking video tutorial and you said that you switched your picking from forearm rotation to strict wrist movement. Could you maybe do a video on how to perform the wrist technique and build speed on it? cheers
Hello! I recommend checking out the recent video I uploaded "The Slowmo Suite: Chromatics". It shows the motion and explains in depth. But above all else, definitely join my discord and you, I, and my community can have a good chat about it? There is much to discuss. You can find the link to my discord along the top navbar of my website: alfredpotter.com
i think this way of telling the story through music, involves much more thoughts into every notes, chords, modes, sacrificing "improvisation" or spontaneousness into a composition. I will definitely try to put that into practice instead of picking random riffs and making them into an arrangement. Sure it's fun and all but it can't hurt to give it a good shot ! Love that shirt ! Sg-1 is the best ! :D
Few months ago I played in a black metal band with serious orchestral sounds and orientation BUT with only funny lyrics (irony about this world) well, of course it doesn't worked for 'primary' minds...Now I am playing with a band mixing metal and techno and it's funnier than ever because people doesn't expect that... Finding the good music orientation is like finding your way, what's the deal ? What do you want to tell ? Etc... Experimentation is good too to find your way threw the music world
yes, very true indeed... i love writing stories and then writing a piece of music that goes along with it or vice versa....and usually the listener make that magic happen! Great work Alfred!
This is what I've always wanted. I love this format. No talking. Just example at speed, then slow demonstration with tablature. I can't believe you did this. It's just so awesome. No endless talking, no having to rewind or fast forward through talking. Thank you.
Thank you so much for appreciating what I do. I noticed back in 2011, when I began my online career, that NOBODY did this. It was all endless talking or being guided through licks verbally one note at a time (without tab on screen) and it made me MAD! I am still here in 2024 making such videos, though unfortunately, people mostly just want to watch junk tiktoks. Why is the internet like this?
Thank you so much. That was the only solo on the album which was improvised :) have you heard my second album, "Splendor of Sands"? Check it out on Spotify and let me know what you think. I think you'll like the outro from the 5th track "The Chronomancer"
Hahah, as a Kahler artist, I am going to be very biased in my response to this. But yes. They are the best whammy bridges in existence. With pro gear comes a pro price tag, but they are the best and worth it.
Hello. If you go to my website you can get video packs with 20 licks in each. There is Vol.1, 2, & 3 available for a total of 60 licks! Better yet. Each video download is just $4 alfredpotter.com/index.php/product
Thank you! This was my custom to celebrate my Kahler bridges endorsement. It was made by Ben Corkill of Ekho instruments here in New Zealand, and the airbrush paintjob was done by Warren Houston
Hi Eric, if this question relates to matching the pickslant with an upcoming string cross, the only thing that matters is that if the final pickstroke on a string is going to be a downstroke: you must be using an UWPS. But if you are asking if, for daily practice in general, one should practice a particular starting stroke with a particular slant, then no: Practice everything! For example, for single-string tremolo practice, you should practice DWPS downstroke start, DWPS upstroke start, UWPS downstroke start, UWPS upstroke start. All of these appear in scalar playing and need to be developed evenly.
Thanks for this one Alfred. I'm curently on my journey with your sweeping program and it's amazing. Always great to have precise explanations about shredding mechanics from you.
Thanks so much for your feedback and support. Teaching and helping means a great deal to me, so I appreciate your kind words =) hop into my discord (it's like a free chat room) if you ever want to hang out? @@AlfredPotterGuitar I joined your discord but also solved my issue. RU-vid playback speed for the win. I didn't even know of the feature til now. Hearing it played slower (instead of just learning the notes) allows me to understand the picking and rhythm of what you're doing. I was getting lost on just following the notes. I'm okay on 1/2 speed and working for 3/4.
I'm currently revising your book "Lead Guitar Practice Methodology (2nd Edition)", in which you write that the best motion for alternate picking is 'yawing' or, in other words, 'side to side.' Does this mean that this video is now outdated? As an example, how would you play the main riff from Metallica's "Fight Fire With Fire"? Using rotational motion or 'side to side'?
That's correct! This video is outdated, but because it's literally one of the only videos people watch (I really don't understand the youtube algorithm...), I leave it up. The rotational style was removed from LGPM when I released its 2nd edition. I did actually teach it alongside the wrist yaw technique, but because the rotational technique is inferior in my opinion (has issues handling uwps), and because it was confusing for students to read a book that teaches two different picking techniques, I decided it had to go! And sorry I am not familiar with that song. Please join my discord and we can hangout and chat? It would be great to have you. I am on there every day as I practice. If one pickstroke direction is catching on the string, it often indicates a pickslant/pickpath mismatch: an asymmetry which will cause issues.
