If one element of the array takes 4 bits, then to access element #10, you go to bit #40.

Good explanation! Although I asked myself about the result 8 - 14 = -6 here your result is (1)1110 . unsigned numbers are always positive from 0 to 255 for 4-Bit. That means I can not calculate a negative number with unsigned numbers. Correct?
