The filters we use are supplied by the HVAC company that handles our general maintenance, and I'm sure it's a cost saving measure. This building has very old rusty plumbing and eats through filters in a matter of months. The water is only used for restrooms and HVAC, not for drinking, so the standard filters are adequate for that purpose.
That makes me happy! If I were to follow up on what I said here, a few other examples of disturbance might include earthquakes, mudslides, floods, fires, natural disasters in general that alter the landscape and subsequent microbiomes. As I was only beginning to say about humans, the urban ecosystem is practically defined by disturbance, but in the form of construction, landscaping/gardening, pest/weed control and so much more. This is why the animals and plants that thrive in urban ecosystems are highly adaptable and tolerant of extreme conditions. Hope this all helps!
