A channel for new gardeners 🌸😊 I’ve been gardening for well over 10 years now. Over the years I’ve happily puttered around my garden experimenting the best ways to grow, prune, feed, and to propagate my plants. I’ve always watched RU-vid but never contributed to the wealth of knowledge available on here. I’ve finally built up the courage to share my putterings 🤗 in the hope that you may benefit in some way from them, as I’ve benefited from so many other gardeners out there. 🪴 😊 I hope you find this channel useful.

Complete plant newbie here. What’s the best potting soil to buy? And how big before it goes in the ground? Zone 6-7 here if that helps
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 12 часов назад
I use miracle grow potting mix. They come in different kinds like “moisture control” ect. but it really doesn’t matter which one you use. Honestly any potting mix, from any company, will work. The whole point of it is to have good drainage. If you water your plants and it runs right through and doesn’t sit on top, that’s a good potting mix. And for planting in the ground, Autumn/Fall weather is really good. The scorching heat of summer has passed by then and the baby plants go through minimal transplant shock. And they get a few months to root in before winter 👍

Where do I find the seeds
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 4 дня назад
You can buy them on eBay for very cheap. People collect them from their plants and sell them. You can also buy them from online plant stores that sell seeds. I think I’ve even seen them being sold in amazon. I’d just google “canna lily seeds” and go with the best option. You’ll only have to buy them once. Then you can collect your own seeds and store them for the next year 👍

I have a Tropicana Black in a container and it blooms beautifully BUT they tend to break off? My husband slid the container a little for room and a new flush of partially opened blooms on one stalk just very cleanly snapped off. It looked as if I cut it, it was so clean. Does anyone know why this happens?
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 4 дня назад
The Tropicana series are hybrids so maybe it’s just something that happens with that variety. It’s probably something the breeders had to accept with that particular cultivar, in order to have a canna with such dark leaves.

@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 8 дней назад
@@susanpharr6809 I replied yesterday but somehow the comment disappeared 🤷‍♀️ so let’s try this again lol I was saying that it very well could be the heat wave. I have three very mature hydrangeas (that I’ve never had problems with) whose flowers have gone crispy and brown. I tried and tried to water but it didn’t help. I think the problem wasn’t the lack of water but that the plant couldn’t send water up faster than it was evaporating from the big leaves. So far only the flowers and the edges of some leaves have browned so they’ll be ugly for the season but I think they will make it through the rest of the summer and live. But if yours are worse than that, I’d probably use a shade cloth over them to help them out. Shade cloth is breathable so they’ll be able to get some air. I have other ones that are in full shade under trees that are holding up pretty well 👍 so I know shade makes a big difference…and if yours are already in full shade.. then I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ what you could do to save them. I hope they hang in there long enough for this heat wave to pass

I have a pathos about this big, although mine is a little fuller and longer. I have never used any kind of fertilizer in it in the ten plus years that I've had it. When I had bought it, it came in a six-inch pot, it's been transplanted throughout the years with the pot having to get bigger and bigger, as it now sits in a 30" pot. The only thing that I have ever done with it throughout the years was to re-soil it every spring using only Maricle grow's moisture control potting soil just once a year. I live in zone 5 and had to dedicate my entire spear bedroom to this plant! I rarely water it during the wintertime, and it sits draping over a gigantic steel utility rack in front of a window that gets indirect sunlight. It's a beast! I would be very interested in finding out how much bigger my pathos would reach if I were to use the fish fertilizer in it. By the way, I just found your channel and I love it!
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 21 день назад
Would you believe all of this is growing in a 12” pot? I’ve repotted it only once in the 5 years I’ve had it, from the 6” pot it came in to the 12”. And it’s been in the same pot, in the same soil since. I imagine it would get fuller with bigger leaves if I repotted it. But I’m keeping it confined to its 12” prison because I can’t have it taking over the whole house, like in that movie Little House of Horrors🤣 I don’t often water mine either. I wait till the soil dries out and then deep water with a water reservoir under it to catch the runoff and then act as a makeshift self watering container so I don’t have to water for a good long while. If I leave it unwatered for too long, some leaves yellow and fall off (that’s those bare spots lol) and that’s when I know I’ve messed up again and go check the soil. I feel like with house plants, it’s way better to underwater than to over overwater. Overwatering is the kiss of death.

Can you give more fetails of when and where to cut ?
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 22 дня назад
You can cut as soon as when your cucumber vine has 5-6 leaves. You can cut the top two nodes for your cutting and leave the rest for your current plant. It will branch out like any other plant would. If the cucumber vine is super long (as it probably would be by this time in the summer) just cut a piece off. It could be two nodes or as long as you want it to be… I say two nodes because one node would mean the very tip and that’s probably too tender to make it on its own… anyway just place in a glass of water and it will root.

Annabelle hydrangeas are a bit tricky, especially in water. They’re a bit weird that way. I always do Annabelles in winter as dormant cuttings. They work much better and give you less work to do. You stick them in some potting soil while they’re still dormant (in winter) and leave them alone for the most part. You’ll still have to water them once spring has sprung and they’ve leafed out, of course, but the success rate is way higher 👍
@jfred1924
@jfred1924 21 день назад
Couple of questions then, do you use cuttings that were new growth, old growth. Pretty sure I have to use a leaf nodes for the roots to start. What about rooting hormone? Do you stick it in a sunny window, dark corner? Actually, if you have a website where I can read up on it, I would not have to bother you with a bunch of questions. Thanks so much, Jeff
@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis 21 день назад
@@jfred1924 so dormant cuttings are a different animal from regular fresh cuttings. You wouldn’t put them in a window because you leave the pot you put them in, outside. To be snowed on and to freeze along with everything else. They’ll actually NEED to stay cold in order to survive and come out of dormancy when the other plants do, in spring. And they do great as single node cuttings so you can get many more plants from one branch. I’m actually working on a video for Annabelle as hardwood cuttings. I’m waiting to upload till I have a complete start to finish process in one video. I’ll be uploading as soon as it’s ready. You’ll have something to follow this coming winter if you’re interested 😊👍

Yes absolutely. If it’s in a spot where it’s getting too much sun, it’s better to dig it up anyway. Otherwise it will definitely struggle when we get to the hottest part of the summer (which is yet to come). Dig them up, put the roots in a bucket overnight (no need to plant it yet, if it’s already dug up) after the treatment, pot in some fresh potting soil and place in the shade. If it hasn’t died completely yet, it should come back for you. Once it has recovered (in the fall), pick a spot with dappled shade as its permanent home. Good luck! 👍

@Garden-Oasis
@Garden-Oasis Месяц назад
I’m not sure.. they recovered and then wilted again? It could be any number of things. Was it in the sun? Are you in a super hot/dry climate? You’re not supposed to keep it submerged in water for two days straight, instead of overnight, you could have damaged the roots. Try taking it out of the pot and taking a look at what’s going on in the pot. Are the roots still white and firm Or mushy? If they are mushy, you’ll have to quickly wash off all that mush or it will spread. If they are still white, that’s good 👍, it could just be the heat wave we had. My very mature, established hydrangeas have crispy flowers after this heat wave. I couldn’t keep them hydrated no matter how much I tried. So it could be any number of things. Do some investigating and see.

Absolutely, it’s possible. I have a video on how to save clearance plants. It’s called “how to revive a wilted hydrangea” but the method in the video works for any clearance plant. Follow the steps. But when you get to the part about bottom watering it, make sure you use a saucer instead of a bowl so that only the bottom inch of the plant is in the water. Keep it in shade till it flushes out with new growth. At that point, you’ll know what part of it is dead and trim those parts off. Then you could go ahead and propagate it to get many, many more. But as it ages, you’ll want to cut it about a foot or two smaller than you want to be in spring. Because those new white branches that emerge in spring will take up room so you’ll want to leave that dead space around it for them to occupy. I hope I made sense there lol

You had 500 cannas?? Wow that’s amazing! The amount of planting and maintenance you must have needed to do for those 😳 I’m truly impressed. Did you get anything truly unique to germinate? If not, I hope your next batch will give you something spectacular 🤞 good luck!

@@Garden-Oasis love the auto irrigation system with 1/4" tubing and micro sprinklers I would give them food very 2 months and trim as needed oh and talk to them. Some of the colors were lighter than the parent plants but the flowers were the same size. All of the plants were in pots so that they could be moved as needed for sun exposure. I enjoy growing them many different species of flowers, wide petals, narrow ones, large flowers, small ones, tight clusters and single ones sorry for the run on Happy Growing everyone
