I'm at rock bottom.. 2 months of the worst time in my life.. And I've been listening Elliott all day, and learning as many Elliott Smith songs to sing and play the guitar to, then throwing them up on youtube (<-- shameful self promotion, but if you happen to read this you miiiight asss well check out my new Elliott Smith covers of Say Yes and Needle in the Hay with Bottle up and Explode, Can't make a sound and Angeles covers all going up this month, possibly all this week depending on how much trouble the rest of Angeles gives me now that I've got 98% of the intro down). But I was desperately looking for musicians like Elliott, incredible 1 of a kind songwriters with pensive, melancholic yet vividly powerful lyrics. I tried listening to a few artists commonly associated with him, but nothing struck a chord with me like Elliott's music has been. I remember I checked out Phoebe in 1 youtube video song, but didn't come back for who knows what reason. I really love this, and I would really appreciate any song recommendations for me by her from fans of hers?
This vocal harmony, where both of them are singing a completely different melody from one another, is sang in a way that makes their voices harmonize and resonate in such a fascinatingly unique way. If they were singing the same notes with the only difference being the guy singing in a lower octave and Phoebe in a higher octave, like in the vast majority of duets in pop songs are sang, this would be so lifeless and flat compared to how they actually sang it here! Just for that incredible vocal harmony with different melodies makes this one of the best and most interesting covers I've ever heard in my life.

Hey thanks so much for responding. Did you record any more footage from this show that you haven’t uploaded? Would love to see it, even if it’s one of the other acts from the tribute night
Aww Pheebs, wonderful job. It's so great, Jack Black idolizes and loves Elliott like all of us but the poor guy had to restart 9 times before he got thru the song right. I want some Tenacious D and Phoebe collabs
Hello Howard! Did you really just share this a few weeks ago?! It is such an amazing video and live version of this!!! I saw BOCC 3/8/2019 and 4/13/19 but only have an audio recording of this song, not a video! Thank you so very much for sharing. 😊🙏🏻
Sounds pretty good but I wish she’d learned the guitar part correctly before performing this. It’s a beautiful little lick and the song suffers without it, beautiful voice or no.
I love seeing this. He sparked her album “punisher” as she considers herself a punisher for Elliott. You hear her talk about him throughout the album. Really wish she sang this when I went to see her! ❤️
@@MonkeyWrenchClang phoebes said the song punisher in some ways expresses an obsessed fan who like fangirls? over their idol to the point where they feel trapped something like that
They come here alone and they leave in twos Except for you and me who just came to use If you're all done like you said you'd be What are you doing hanging out with me Why you tell me stuff that's so plainly untrue If you'll be straight with me, I'll be straighter with you If you're all done like you said you'd be What are you doing hanging out with me I've been wanting to do anything for a long time But whatever you got right now will probably suit me fine If you're all done like you said you'd be What are you doing hanging out with me I've been wanting to do anything for a long time Whatever you're doing now would probably suit me fine If you're all done like you said you'd be What are you doing hanging out with me What are you doing hanging out with me
I think you may have taken one too many knocks to the noggin mr. Balboa. Art isn’t a competition, your personal preference is completely valid but that doesn’t mean you need to put someone else down who is paying tribute to Elliott. Also not even acknowledging “this girl” by name when she is obviously also a fan seems rude. Oh and that’s not Conor Oberst playing with Phoebe though I’m not sure who he is. Shit… whatever I’m happy you like Elliott, the world could use more of us.
I agree this cover isn't perfect. But if you love Elliott (like we all do), I'd highly recommend checking out Phoebe Bridgers' ("this girl")'s solo work. She's a huge fan of Smith and is the closest to a modern day version of him that I'm aware of. Her music is honestly wonderful
