The twin-sailed boat at 0:27 is actually not a dhoni. I didn't know such boats even existed now. It is a battheli. The hull of the battheli is visibly different from that of a dhoni. The battheli is bigger and does not have the signature bow-piece known as dhirunbaakolhu-moggandu. The battheli is an inter-atoll freight-carrier, while the dhoni is a (multi-purpose) fishing vessel. Larger vessels known as odi and nau were also used in the Maldives, for international trade. The dhoni was traditionally powered by a single sail while the nau, battheli and odi sailed with more than one sail. Interestingly the Divehi language shares the word "battelli" with the Italian and the Corsican languages. The word "nau" (boat) means precisely the same in both Latin and Divehi. An Italian battelli (plural battello) could be a very large ship, compared to a Maldivian battheli. While Italians were among the first modern tourists who arrived in the Maldives, beginning in the 1970s, the Maldives "battelli" had been in existence for centuries before tourism. There are historical records of Roman ships that visited the Maldives as early as the 4th century AD and Roman coins dating back to pre-Christian times have been found buried in the Maldives. The most famous such coin was the Roman republican denarius of Gaius Vibius Pansa, minted in 90 BC, excavated from a Buddhist temple, buried deep inside the forest of Thoddu island in 1959.
@@Christian_Paul_nz Thanks for following up the discussion :-). Indeed books were a great source of knowledge...A trend that seems to vanish. But that's another ( long ) subject. Its a Batheli indeed, but Maldivians call them all in the daily language "Dhoni" or Doani. The one we filmed in the video was one of 6 superb "luxury Dhonis" - made at disposal for clients and owned by a Maldivian company. They were bult solely for this purpose. Sadly, they are extremely rare nowadays, even for locals who prefer speedboats. It was amazingly beautiful. It's nice to exchange with someone who's really interested in the Maldivian culture and not only in resorts... Thank you Christian.
@@DreamingofMaldives gosh, you must be a mind-reader over the worldwide web. Literally a few hours ago, I remembered my comment above and wanted to copy that. I even looked all over my e-files but realised that I had not kept a copy. Now here you are, replying to the exact comment that I was looking for. When I have finished compiling my blurb, I might send you a copy.
@@Christian_Paul_nz Oh my ! This is excellent !! In French we have a saying : ( in all modesty ) - "Great Minds Think Alike", a quote from the great Voltaire. I guess that it perfectly applies here ( again without any pretention :-)
