Judy Wai (last name pronounced: “way”). A big potato acting as a school counselor and life explorer. I hope my adventures (or misadventures…) inspire and encourage you.
Watched this right before my interview. I was so nervous and made some slip ups, but I kept in mind that this is something I'm truly passionate about and that brought me some peace. I got the call today that I got in. Thank you for the encouraging words at the end of the video this world needs people like us to make a change so don't stop chasing your dreams ☺
So glad I came upon your video. I am currently getting my undergraduate in Psychology. I am wanting to go to grad school for school counseling and work in either elementary or middle school when I graduate. Do you have any tips on applying to masters programs for school counseling?
Wow what a great idea! I never thought of mailing a physical card. That will surely make u stand put and show you put alot of thought and care into your thank you! Everyone emails a thank you but never physically mail one. It would have been a good idea to still email a thank you but mail a thank you as well. Postal mail take time which could be a good thing considering it's been 2 months since my interveiw!
I watched this video during my first year of my Clinical Mental Health program in grad school and at that time I was having a major midlife (quartervlife??) crisis because I didn't know what I wanted to do with that degree and started to regret my decision. After watching this and your other videos, you made me consider school counseling and I eventually added a school counseling concentration to my program. I just started my first real school counseling position at a high school this week, and I love every bit of it, so I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for helping me through this journey and inspiring me to make the leap!!!
Post more videos. I love your channel and I’m a new subscriber. I might go to grad school for counseling right now, I am a junior majoring in psychology.
I've been stressing all day about my group interview tomorrow. This helped me calm down. Thanks for counseling and guiding us to just relax and be ourselves. 👍🏼
I honestly really wanna go for this career because of how much my Counsler say school changed my life in a positive way and I want to do the same ! Was it hard to get a job in this field ?
Thank you so much for your video! I'm having my interview today in a couple minutes! I've been practicing for days but watching your video turned my nervousness into excitement for my interview!
Hi Judy, I loved your video and super helpful especially the example questions you shared. I have a grad school interview in a few weeks so just wanted to say this made me feel better about it c:
I'm currently in my last semester as an senior as an undergraduate with a major in sociology. I want to work with children in a sense of interacting and having one on one with them. But I'm having a hard time knowing what job title I want to do. I definitely want to take a gap year or so before I go back to get my masters. But trying to figure out what job is best for me is hard. That's why I came across your videos. So do you have any tips?
I’d think about types of jobs you’re interested in. Look at program descriptions, class descriptions, and see if any of them resonate with you. Reach out and interview people already working in your fields of interest to learn more about what that job or major entails. Enjoy the gap year and I hope it’s a meaningful time for you!!
This video is so informative and helpful! I am waiting my HKU interview in the afternoon and I am so stressed out! But you made me chill. Thank you so much xoxo
I graduated in psych this year and I’m taking a year off. My initial plan was counselling psych but right now I am so so confused I literally get so distressed. I have lost passion for things and I really don’t know what to do. I can’t afford to waste another year now.
Hey! It can feel extremely confusing/stressful/frustrating to adhere to the pressures of finding the right career path. I recommend reaching out to professionals working in your fields of interests and asking them about their work life and insights into their job! Doing so helped me gain personal opinions about different jobs and helped inform my decisions as to which career path to take. Hope this helps :/ feel free to reach out to me as well if you have any questions about my job and my career path :)
@@heyjudywai Thank you so much. I am working on reaching out to a counsellor right now. I actually am from India and really want to study in the US.... do you know anything regarding the job prospects for international students? Especially when it comes to counselling or school psych? Thank you!
My best friend is from an international country and found a job. I think the job market is increasing for counseling related careers. It is still competitive but there are increasing opportunities every year!
I’ve always thought about School Counseling till I found out I have to teach for 3 years first... Which I’m not a fan of. But it’s always been in the back of my mind. Now I’ve been thinking about School Psyc or Social Work, but I’m still thinking about School Counseling too. How would I even go about teaching or getting a teaching certificate. If I apply to the program anyway, would I get help from advisors/professors to do that?
A teaching credential/cert would be helpful to have but not necessary to apply for school counseling graduate programs! You will learn classroom management in some courses and through your fieldwork hours. You mostly teach SEL lessons in elementary and middle..not necessarily high schools. Hope this makes sense!
Hey Judy! I was hoping to get some perspective on this: I’m currently a school psych grad student in the Bay Area and I’m feeling more called to the counseling profession in schools. I’m getting the sense that school counselors get to work with individuals and groups or lead classroom SEL lessons, which sounds right up my ally. I definitely don’t want to be stuck in a testing only role as a school psychologist. Any advice/insight from what you experience at your school?
I’m happy to connect with you if you have specific questions! I love my job :) and you are right! I do individual sessions, small groups, and whole class lessons..but I also work very closely with my principal and all teachers to provide holistic support to all students and families. We wear many hats but I love what I do!
I hate mine in 5th grad because she did a prank saying they were going to hold in any one born after April I think had to lose free time while we did math, we started a 5th grade riot we hated her ever since we’ll ever one born after June, bitch.
This is super helpful and appreciate the encouragement to go to a place you feel comfortable with too. I am currently a substitute teacher in Northern CA and now at 51 years old am applying for my masters in school counseling with Liberty University . Although they are in VA and will have to fly out for two weeks of intensives...I can do all of my other field work within the district I already work for. For me the discount for military spouses is really good and I'm already used to their program from getting an interdisciplinary degree with them online. Thank you for all of your information !!!!!
I’m glad you found a program that fits your needs and schedule. I’m excited for you to complete your application!! Best of luck to you and wishing you all the best!!
It is a lot to review and organize! It’s great to be open to new ideas, but it’s okay to have routines and be happy with what works for you while building your curriculum.
Hi! This video was super helpful! I have really been struggling on what career path I should follow and what is right for me. I considered business, but as you mentioned, I'm also not competitive enough or intense like that. I considered being a school counselor and watching this video has really made me excited about it! If I majored in Education, would that be a good major choice to then become a school counselor? (aside from getting a Masters and PPSC)
Aww yay! I’m glad my video sparked your interest! Yes, I think having a major in education would be helpful. Any work or class experience related to working with kids in educational settings would be good. Your masters program and graduate internships will provide you with more insight and knowledge for the career. You got this!!
Hi I’m a middle school counselor and I just started my channel. I found your channel in my search for other counselors. Cant wait to watch more of your videos.
I liked hiking in feb! I went during the last weekend of February. It gets cold at night but it’s comfortable hiking weather during the day! I’d recommend going in March/April for the most comfortable weather.
Aww thank you for the support!! It’s been a crazy year but I have some video ideas planned over the summer when I have more time to film :)) have a great summer!! 💓💓
