Three lifelong friends and Marine Corps veterans from wildly different backgrounds talk about our respective searches for God and truth and our journeys through the Bible, through life and middle age, and the secrets of history and religion and the universe and our own humble struggle to save Western civilization. We’re not experts, but we take ourselves VERY seriously, and you should too! Or don’t. At the very least, you’ll be entertained. We always are!
Great episode! I really hope y'all are able to have the Calvinist pastor come back and be on the show. I was first made aware of Calvinism years ago when I was visiting a church and the preacher preached on John 3 and how to be 'born again" God must first "bring you to life" (like Lazarus) so that you can repent. I was totally dumbfounded. The idea of regeneration preceding faith shook me to my core and I wondered what the purpose of anything was.
At the tower of Babel, they had one language, think Latin, and God divided them into many languages. Acts 2:8“And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”
Incoming large post: Hard disagree on knowing trinitarianism is true by faith. It is obvious from scripture, it can be demonstrated from scripture. A thing does not have to be understood exhaustively to know it. Any christian who “knows it by faith” is in danger, just as any Christian who knows any other aspect of Christianity on faith. (Faith being defined as that gross and lazy “blind and unjustified acceptance of a claim”) I KNOW trinitarianism is true because the Bible records a God who is the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Bible depicts each as distinct persons. The Bible claims God is one, yes. But it uses the same word for God is one, as it does for a husband and wife becoming one: Echad. A oneness of being, not personhood. So when God said let us make man in our Image in the beginning, and then John tells us that Jesus was with God and was God in the beginning, well… I don’t know what to tell you other than, the Bible teaches God is a Trinity. I don’t have to understand how it’s possible, or how it works, thats only tangentially relevant. The Bible says the above things, it does not contradict them, they are internally consistent, and therefore logic dictates that God must be triune in nature.
We don't allow men to be leaders in society any more? Feminism has destroyed everything? So what is Feminism? It is the right for women to advocate for stuff that they want. In a democratic society if you are a group you can float ideas and see if you can change things. On the other hand if you think someone's ideas are unhinged you can oppose them. It is how things work. Women appear to have wanted a series of things. They include the right to get educated, the right to have jobs like being a lawyer or an accountant or a plumber. If we go back to the 50s women did not get educated and there were "women's jobs". These included stuff like being a nurse a primary school teacher or a hairdresser. It turned out that women wanted to be able to reach for the stars. They wanted to become doctors and scientists and enter politics or run movements. So now you have had right wing women like Margaret Thatcher and the current leader of Italy run countries. On the left you have had Jacinta Adern the leaders of Finland, Estonia and Denmark. Now I have news for you guys. We are not going back to the 50s. No one seriously wants to kick women out of higher education and the professions. If you look at rich guys in your country they marry women with careers and higher educations. They do not import uneducated women they can dominate.
Re: the topic du jour, I've kind of settled into this position: critical thinking Jesus followers shouldn't really be aligned left or right. Associating current polarized politics with bible following Christianity ruins the Christianity. The allegiance to a political tribe takes away from allegiance to Christ and being citizens of heaven.
Matt, you should have stopped by for a home cooked meal. Bit of a drive from Chicago proper. Mr Bibbs - track news is great. I hope to be watching a Bibbs this summer. 😉
@@MountHermeneuticsPodcast Portillos is a solid destination. Sadly they have discontinued their ribs - which were truly outstanding, even more considering it's a fast food place. I hope you tried the beef with giardinara.
4773 Very interesting discussion. Question. If the church isn’t doing its job of mentoring believers into maturity, what can I do to add the qualities from 2 Peter to myself? How do I do that?
To the point of complication: I'm going to ref the onion. There are myriad stories of people opening that Gideon bible and being saved - without a theology degree. Those people get the point. I think that is target #1 for God. Now to Brian's point last week - to grow and be fruitful and make disciples; you maybe need to study. Peel the layers so to speak. You can't categorize all of it as too complicated.
Re: the foot washing vid discussion - I think Brian's comments would be more valid (on point) if the organization running the add wasn't full Osteen-like.
So, I'm pretty far left, and an Atheist. But I do find this interesting to listen to. It's a radically different perspective, with some points that I actually agree with. It's just interesting to realize that people arrive at their conclusions in totally different ways. I do think these guys fall into the trap of straw-manning "the left" a bit, so it would be interesting to hear them talk to someone who would challenge their worldviews a little.
@@mattmoore5731 Hey if you guys want to chat I'd probably be up for it. I'd probably want to know the topic in advance though, to make sure I could bring something relevant to the conversation.
I’m a young white guy that’s very confrontational if people are antagonistic towards me… never been called a racist. It’s hard to get people to a point where they say that to you. I even make racial jokes quite often. The left-leaning people who are slandered online constantly by people like y’all have never had a problem with the things I say. Why? Because they’re not as sensitive as they’re portrayed and there’s ways to talk about these things without being a crappy person.
10:00 The comment about the defense when being called a racist is just a straw man. You’re circling around the accusation and then projecting. You might have in one specific scenario been called a racist with no apparent reason but to simply call someone else a pedo bc they called you a racist is so childish. If you’re regularly being called a racist id think there’d be a reason for it and would/should compel you to honestly ask yourself and the accuser, why, and Not attack them in defense but take on the attack and defend your position that you have every right to believe.
We are living in Satans greatest Deception. I didn't ever believe in God because the Bible sounded like a fairytale. I traveled so much, and decided to prove a flat earth friend wrong. I started doing a bunch of tests to prove the heliocentric model. I don't know what I'm living on or in, but I know 💯 that the model they give us isn't close to being true. None of our history is true. We are living in the short season in my opinion. I now take the Bible literally. I don't listen to what the God of this world tells me to believe.
@@brianervin7643 I agree that dismissing facts as being fiction would be an issue. My use of the term fact is that which can be shown to be the case given the preponderance of evidence. My use of the term fiction is that which cannot be shown to be the case.
Interesting discussion... and btw I usually like the questions that get brought up even if they get y'all side-tracked. They're usually the same types of questions I find myself asking.
