I googled a day in the life of a composer as I was procrastinating and trying to hide away from Sibelius. It´s nice to see another composer having the same problems. And now back to work 🎹
Thoroughly enjoyed this vlog even if it was from a year ago. Breathtaking typing skills at the 2:00 minute mark. 🤯 This is inspiring me to get out my camera and make something!
Thank you for the inspiration. I had visited the other videos a last time ago and now! What a cool place right now, men! Very good inspiration! I am trying to be a publisher my self. I am from Brazil and here B4 size is not commun, just A4, or A3. The printers are all A4 and A3 printers are very expensive. 🤙
Thank you for watching. I've never had to deal with paper sizes anywhere except for USA, so I can't speak to the norms in other countries, but all I can say is that I'm happy with my big laserjet printer. It was very expensive, but I haven't regretted the purchase, and it makes very high quality printings, so I'm glad I did it.
Drew! Just binged the last few studio set up videos! Awesome new space! I hope the house stuff is getting better. Having to fix stuff is the worst. Also, nice shirt at the end! :)
Haha. I picked it on a whim because I thought it sounded funny and since the percussion ensemble was built of a bunch of different types of grooves, I thought it suited its not-serious nature. I looked it up later and found out that it was also the name of a cymbal cleaner. :) I’ve had people in several different countries buy the piece. 🤷🏻♂️ Hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be something really inappropriate. Haha.
Thank you again for the inspiration. Half of my gear has been moved to my new studio space and we're moving the other half in the next week or two, then I will commence on a similar journey.
I’m glad the series helped! And I hope your move goes super smoothly! Next week is the last in the series and it feels good to be all moved in. I’m excited for your new studio as well! Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks! I was just thinking about how when you posted your studio tour video my wife and I hadn't even begun the conversation about moving, and now I'm in a new place. haha. It's wild how quick things can move sometimes! I'm not sure how frequent my "studio update" videos will be, but hopefully you'll get to see the finished product before too long!
I will for sure check in again with you once I get to the finishing of my book. I will only have ten piano pieces with 4-5 pages per song. I may need some advice! This is the first time I am selling my music by sheetmusic. I am learning a lot by the tutorials on utube. Thank you
Thanks for watching! I wish I would have recorded the mixer audio and done a little more jamming so you could have heard more of what it could do. But that Mood made the melodica do some pretty cool things.
I use Sibelius. I’m currently using the subscription version Sibelius Ultimate, but I’ve been using Sibelius since Sibelius 2. I’ve thought of switching to Dorico, but a lot of people I work with when I’m writing stuff for marching shows use Sibelius, so I’d need to have both, so I stick with Sibelius even though there are certain things about it that drive me crazy. I’ve also considered trying out Musescore since it’s become so powerful recently. What do you use?
Thanks! Haha after doing all the work on the melodica, I realized I had a second contact mic and the kalimba was just laying there so I figured, why not? (And I think I actually preferred the sound of the kalimba to the sound of the melodica, and it took a fraction of the effort. Haha)
Cool! I've always thought that electromagnetic pickups next to the metal reeds would sound cool, but it doesn't seem like it would be very easy to implement.
I’ve never tried to do anything with pickups (other than the ones on my guitar and bass that I never play) but if you ever put something together like that, I’d love to hear about it!!! Thanks for watching. :)
I wish I had time to make more videos, but things have been just busy enough that I don’t make it any farther than thinking up an idea. But maybe over the summer I’ll get a few more put together.
Haha. Normally I see top down videos like this with pristine desks and mine had synths all over the place that I just pushed out of the way for the video. But normally I can’t even get to the surface of the desk. :)
@@helloabbylyons I've never really found a cardstock I absolutely love. (I've wanted to find a glossy tabloid cardstock, but haven't found any that weren't unnecessarily expensive). All the cardstock I've used over the past few years is just 65 pound cardstock and sometimes 80 pound that I either got from Hammermill or Neenah. I used to just buy it a ream at a time from Amazon, but when I found the yellow that I liked and wanted to get enough that would match in letter size, tabloid size, and also 12x18, I ordered a bunch from "The Paper Mill". I later found basically the same kind (Neenah) on Amazon under both "solar yellow" and "sunburst yellow". I don't know if that will actually answer your question, but basically, the 65 pound cardstock has done fine for me over the past 5 or 6 years. If you just want white, you can probably find some by searching cardstock 11x17 on amazon, though you'll probably have to scroll for a while before you actually find anything that matches your search. If you still have more questions, let me know!
@@drewmorrismusic that’s super helpful, thank you!! I was looking at Hammermill but just wasn’t sure what lb would be best. I will probably go with the white cardstock. I also like the idea of glossy cardstock though! I am not sure if it will work with my printer, or if it might smear. Do you have an inkjet or laser? Do you think I can print okay on glossy with an inkjet? I just got an inkjet printer off of Facebook marketplace for this project. I have to print about 60 books to fulfill some kickstarter rewards for my album release. :) Also do you recommend 28 or 32 lb for the inner pages? I think I remember you saying 28 but I have been seeing 32 recommended elsewhere too. Thanks so much for your help!! :D
@helloabbylyons My current printer is a laserjet. Back when I had inkjet, smearing was a concern of mine too. If you are using ink, I think it might be good to avoid glossy cardstock just to be safe. For the inner pages question, I used to use 32 for the scores and 28 for loose sheet music/parts, but I switched over to 28 pound paper for everything because it’s a tad cheaper and one less thing to keep up with. I haven’t really been able to tell much of a difference between the 32 and 28. (And no one who has bought physical sheet music recently has complained about the change).
There are a lot of options for easy digital sales nowadays if you want to self publish. If you have the sheet music looking good you could release them on a personal website/store, or put them online on various services like Hal Leonard’s “Arrange Me” or JW Pepper’s “My Score” that will release them out to various digital marketplaces. (And take a share of the profits of course). If you want to publish traditionally, you would need to reach out to publishers. I’ve only dealt with one traditional publisher and they only publish percussion music so that wouldn’t help you very much. But really, if you have music that you think would sell, I’d encourage you to at least create a website where people could listen to it and look at samples. Even if you don’t have an online store yet, you could still give them a contact link so they could reach out to you directly to purchase your music. If you have more questions, please feel free to reach out. (I’ve been meaning to do a “digital side of self publishing” video for a while now and just haven’t gotten around to it.). Thanks for much for watching!
Hi this was so amazing to watch as a young composer. Although i mainly compose on the piano or organ the fact thar you use so many intruments is impressive interesting and inspiring. Also thank you for showing the truth of not always being super productive it was super reassuring :D. And yes i also do find myself using the same chrod progressions or something like that in a piece (it's kinda addictive lol)
Thanks for watching! Lately I’ve been having more unproductive days than productive ones. Hopefully that will change in a few days when I finish teaching for the semester. I hope you have some super productive days as well!
